The 25-year-old MC bounded up on stage and immediately raised the energy in the room with a bass-heavy set that brought a touch of Miami to Austin and, in his standout track, ‘Finna Hit My Walk’, even taught us the secret to his swag. While the Miami bass heyday of 2 Live Crew and company is over, its sound slowly fading into the past, there is a new generation of Miami rappers trying to give the city something else to shake to. South Florida native Yung Gordon is among them.

“I grew up in Opa-locka, Florida, and the Miami music in my neighborhood always influenced me to become interested in the music culture,” says the 24-year-old MC.

Gordon, whose birth name is Seth, says he discovered his talent for making music in his early teenage years. While he had a rough start getting the hang of things as an artist, eventually he found his voice.

“I was 14 years old when I first discovered I had talent in music,” the Opa-locka native says. “I was not the best at it, but as time passed, I worked hard to become better.” - Miami New Times

‘All I Do Is Sauce’

DJ Ghost affiliate and Southern Hospitality favourite Yung Gordon has followed up the underrated Miami club rap one-two ‘Bobble Walk’ and ‘Just Like Dat’ with his long-awaited debut mixtape Bossin Up, which is so fresh and playable we’re hesitant to pick a highlight.

Florida-based rapper Yung Gordon initially came to our attention via Southern Hospitality, who picked up on his infectious regional hits ‘Bobble Walk’ and ‘Finna Hit My Walk’. These tracks highlighted a very particular strain of Miami club rap buoyed by rolling bass drops, infectious hooks and rattling percussion, and Yung Gordon was an ideal guide, giving the tracks a youthful bounce that’s hard to ignore.

Bossin Up is Yung Gordon’s debut mixtape, and features a slew of club bangers, from the Gucci-sampling ‘All I Do Is Sauce’ (if you can’t guess the sample, delete your account) to the aforementioned banger ‘Finna Hit My Walk’. Gordon straddles the club sound well, distancing this selection of tracks from pretty much anything else in the round-up this week. While there are a handful of more obvious tunes (‘Don’t Talk To Me’, ‘Let You Know’), Gordon excels when he’s working with weirder sounds. ‘Kill It’ is a perfect example of this, a track that juxtaposes his memorable boasts with sparse synths and booming Miami-ready 808 kicks. Elsewhere ‘Slide’ shows Gordon’s versatility, as he toys with a beat that sounds not unlike vintage Timbaland.

Bossin Up isn’t the most finessed tape you’ll find this week by any means, but it’s a fine example of a young rapper who wildly deserves the chance to break out of his home state and go global. - Fact Magazine

Even before the full song dropped, a 10-second snippet of Yung Gordon’s self-produced single was racking up plenty of Vines in Miami and its surrounding cities.
