"Cerphe Colwell"

"Love Xyra's recordings! Her wonderful imagery and poetry are
complemented by the band and the production...great stuff! I
especially like Not To Fall, Never Lost Forever, Dreams, Remember
Nothing, The Banished, and All I Can Do. Best wishes for a sonic year
filled with light, love, and music! Cheers!" ~ Cerphe Colwell -
Cerphe's Progressive Show (formerly w/ WJFK, WGTB, and WFHS) - Xyra

"What Media Have to Say About Xyra"

Note the various reviews.... - The Washington Post, NPR, Washington City Paper, USA Today, etc

"A Diva by Any Other Name"

At Blues Alley a few months back, Xyra sang like a diva, her voice swaying and swooping to somewhat melodramatic lyrics about life and love and death and art. She stood very still on stage, swaying her platinum blond hair ever so slightly. Such rocking out as was done that night was handled by her band: pianist Andrew Cann, clarinetist/flutist Donald Stapleson, cellist Fred Lieder, drummer Norman Thorne, bassist Larry Lawrence and guitarist Eric Ulreich. All together they're known as Xyra & Verborgen, and they'll be performing on Wednesday at Blues Alley in celebration of their new CD, "Frightening Beauty". - The Washington Post

"Review Snippets"

"Clearly, Xyra has deeper things on her mind...!"
~ Eric Brace - The Washington Post

"Be not afraid of the Beautiful Noise that is Xyra...!"
~ David Nuttycombe - Washington City Paper

"Edith Piaf meets Fairport Convention in a dark alley and gets mugged by Nico."
~ Lee Michael Demsey, WAMU, Smithsonian Folkways

"Xyra’s unique vocal phrasing and melodies, intriguing lyrical
content. and poignant delivery make a statement all their own."
~ Richard Fuller - NPR's WETA FM, and Voice of America TV

"Xyra was a DJ on Georgetown University's radio station, where she
favored the darker, artier, more theatrical side of rock. Her tastes may
not have shifted since then, but these days Xyra makes her own
music!" ~ Mark Jenkins - The Washington Post, Slate
Magazine,National Public Radio (NPR), and Public Radio International
(PRI), among others

"Xyra exudes a spirituality that is somewhere between here and
there. Lets just say that the lyrical content is always entertaining,
sometimes cryptic and certainly worth a listen! The players, all very
talented but too numerous to mention, back Xyra with a thick sound
full of energy." ~ Michael Macey - Chesapeake Music Guide, WRNR FM

"Grammy Nominee, Xyra is distinctly bright, yet darkly serious!"
~ Victor Nazarian - DARK Lines

"Whether backed by stunning musicians, or going solo, soul
searching experiences, and spiritual reflection clearly affect Xyra's
approach to songwriting, today."
~ Richard Fuller - WHRW FM (formerly w/ Voice of America
(VOA), and WETA, National Public Radio (NPR))

"Characterized by the evocatively warm vocal talents of Xyra and
the tremendously rich instrumentation of her classically-trained team
of musicians, fans of progressive rock, folk and new age music will
be pleased."
~ R. W. Elliot - New Musical Discoveries

"Xyra's voice is very dramatic, deep and theatrical. She's been
compared to Marlene Dietrich and I can see why. The music is just as
dramatic as her voice."
~ Amy Lotsburg - Women in Music

"Deeply intriguing and intellectually stimulating - wonderful voice!"
~ George Campbell - George Campbell Associates

"Xyra & Verborgen's riveting musicianship and message redefine the
term Alternative. They are trend-setters, portending an exciting,
auspicious new genre!" ~ Marco Delmar - Recording Arts
Studio (formerly lead guitarist, singer and songwriter for Capitol artists,
The Elektics)

"Spiritual . . . Emotional . . . Visionary"
~ Richard Fuller - WETA FM, Washington, DC

"Verborgen denotes a kind of Cabaret for the New Millennium"
~ Robert Goldstein - National Public Radio (NPR)
(formally composer and lead guitarist for the Urban Verbs)

Never Lost Forever
"Love Xyra's recordings! Her wonderful imagery and poetry are
complemented by the band and the production...great stuff! I

Bio

Never mind comparisons to Marlene Dietrich, Edith Piaf, Nico, Siouxsie, or Annie Lennox ~ Xyras unique vocal phrasing, and melodies, intriguing lyrical content and poignant delivery make a statement all their own.

After moving to the US from Germany, Xyra began music and piano lessons at age five, and voice at eight, performing before her teens. At age 14, Xyras mother surprised her with an electric guitar. At age 15, she joined her first band, playing original music.

True to her roots, Xyra resumed vocal training ~ this time with Director of Music Theater, Charles Williams, at The Levine School of Music, in DC, and renowned, Mezzo-soprano, Medea Namoradze.

Xyra is a prolific songwriter who created most of the material for five musical releases available worldwide, the most recent produced by triple-Platinum Grammy winner, Jim Ebert at Cue Recording Studios.

Over the years, Xyra & Co. garnered a vote for a Grammy Nomination, received extensive media attention ~ such as reviews and features in the Washington Post, NPR and PRI, and international and national airplay.

Currently, Xyra can be heard performing with Andrew Cann on piano, and Eric S. Uleich on lead guitar, both formerly with her 7-piece band, Verborgen.
