During the latter part of 2015, Waconzy released his greatest hits album, which featured songs like, “Na God”. Amandah Opoku sat down with Waconzy to talk about his greatest hits release, record label DV8 and what fans can expect this year! Check out the interview below!
Amandah Opoku: For those who are not familiar with you, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Waconzy: My name is Kelvin, I am known by stage name Waconzy. I am an Afro beats singer with family roots in the igbo tribe of Nigeria.. I write, sing, produce and perform. I am also a charity worker and a project manager. I am the founder and CEO of Dv8 Media and Waconzy foundation.
AO: What did you decide call yourself Waconzy?
Waconzy: The name waconzy was given to me by my Ghanaian rapper when I was about 16 years old. The name waconzy is a blend of two english words “Wacko” and “Zanny” which both mean eccentric and i feel those words describe my music and personality a great deal as I always dare to be different.
AO: Why did you decide to pursue a career in music?
Waconzy: I started my career in music because music was my only true found love. Music was the only way i could express myself and share my good news to the world. I love music it gives me joy and satisfaction.
AO: Your latest release is “Na God”, whose music video you released in October. Waconzy: What was the inspiration for the song?
My music is my truth; it is the expression of my personal life story. Na God was inspired by a recent life challenge. i recently got myself involved in a lot of issues and i didn’t have any way out but by means of Gods love and grace, i overcame all the temptations unhurt and i also recovered all that i lost. The song also gives back the thanks and glory to God Almighty.
AO: You are an independent artist, currently signed to your own record label DV8 Media. What inspired you to create your own record label?
Waconzy: I believe in the saying that if you want something done, “Do it yourself” . Over the years,i waited for a record deal but soon realized that i could start getting some things done while i wait for the deal. so i decided to study the industry, read books, took a degree in project management and finally i set up my record label Dv8 Media to handle my affairs. I am still open to bigger opportunities / record deals though.
AO: Why did you decide to name your record label, DV8 Media?
Waconzy: The word Dv8 means “Deviate”. more like stand out from the crowd. Be unconventional, Be different .and that what i stand for. Instead of Dv8 records, we chose to call it Dv8 Media as we also have interest in other parts the media business asides the music industry.
AO: Will you be signing any artists to your label?
Waconzy: We recently signed our first artiste CeeCollins. He is a very good highlife Afrobeats singer and we are very proud to welcome him to the Dv8 family.
AO: As an artist, what would you like fans and music listeners alike to take away from your music?
Waconzy: I always want my listeners to always be Inspired when they listen to my music. i want my music to always talk to their soul and give them hope in difficult citations.
AO: The African music scene has changed and developed since your debut in 2008, with the emergence of Afro Beats as a dominating genre. Will this change and shift affect your music?
Waconzy: No it won’t. i am an innovative and versatile artiste.
AO: Following your last release “Na Good”, what can fans expect from you this year?
Waconzy: I just dropped a new single titled “Powerful”. We would be releasing the video for the track “balling like Waconzy” next month April 2016. After which we will drop the remix for same track with Jamaican singer Cecile. After that,we will drop the videos for the songs “Ogbono and Powerful”. Also Expect to hear new tunes from our new artiste CeeCollins.
Before the end of the year, we will also have the third “Waconzy versus malaria campaign”. this campaign is an anti-malaria campaign aimed at eradicating malaria from developing countries and its sponsored by Waconzy foundation. I shall also be touring different parts of the world to spread my message and have a one and one with my fans.
AO: Are there any artists or DJ’s you’d like to collaborate with in the future?
Waconzy: I have worked with couple of great artistes like Truth Hurts, Timaya, Banky W and many more. I have also worked with Dj Tim Westwood, Dj Humility , Dj Xclusive and lots of Great afro beats Djs worldwide

AO: The music industry is constantly changing which is seen with the emergence of music sites such as TIDAL, and Spotify. What are your thoughts on how music is consumed? Do you prefer users buying on digital sites or streaming?
Waconzy: For me, I rather a fan buy my music than stream it but I have nothing against streaming as it also increases my stream of income.
AO: As we mentioned the African music scene is developing, with the emergence of Afro Beat artists who are taking over the scene. Which artists have you been listening to these days?
Waconzy: I listen to every good artiste, none in particular.

AO: Before we end the interview, is there anything you’d like to say to our viewers and your fans?
Waconzy: I want to thank my fans for the support so far and i want to let them know that with God on their side, there will always be light at the end of the tunnel. I advice every Good man out there to fight against evil. like the saying goes, evil things happen when good people do nothing.
Also want my people to know that the present can never be the same with the future. all you need do is have a plan, hope and depend on God, be focused/disciplined and pray. If you fail, Try again and again and again. Success is surely yours! I also advice my female fans to treat their womanhood with respect and strive to be self dependent. God bless all my people.
