Sudbury rockers Vintage Slang release their debut album Saturday with a mission to bring alternative rock back to the mainstream. They're kicking it off old school with a house party located in the basement of a former church. Bring your own bevies and some money for pizza.
It's like the 90s all over again, but this time you don't have to worry about curfew - chances are your mom won't be waiting up, either.
The idea to form a band was born in the wee morning hours at a New Year's party a few years back between friends Matt Cheese, Dustin Moore, Mike Loiselle and Av Srivastava.
Although they came from different musical backgrounds - Moore played metal and Loiselle studied jazz at Laurentian University -- they all grew up listening to Big Wreck, Sloan and Our Lady Peace, bands that would later inspire their music and songwriting. Some of them played baseball together, so the concepts of teamwork and collaboration were already state of mind.
"Everybody writes the music," said Srivastava who plays drums and manages the band. "Matt writes all the words, but everyone brings music to the band."
With songs like Burn and Blame, the common theme in the album entitled Standing Still is breakdown of interpersonal relationships.
"We had a few close friends who went through marriage breakdowns and that's what was on Matt's mind when he wrote the lyrics."
The album was recorded by Brent Wohlberg of Artifact Media and mastered by Matt Doherty.
In the last two years, Vintage Slang has performed around town from Canada Day festivities, to New Music Fest and downtown venues. But to celebrate the making of an album, they wanted to do something out of the ordinary.
"Although we've been together for a few years, we're still mostly unknown," laughed Srivastava.
"This is a good way for us to introduce our music to a large number of people at a low cost. And a low cost to them, too."
A maximum of 200 tickets will be sold.
The album release party is taking place 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday at 131 Regent St., formerly St. Paul's United Church.
Three other bands will perform along with Vintage Slang: Goodnight, Sunrise (Toronto), Fortunate Losers (Sudbury) and Sex & Summer (Sudbury).
"We're kind of thanking them for doing us favours over the last couple of years," Srivastava said about the lineup. "They've brought us in to play shows with them."
However, don't expect to see Vintage Slang on a cross-Canada tour.
"Now that we're in our 30s, we have to be responsible. We all have jobs," said Srivastava who works as a financial planner.
"But the plan is to do a tour of Ontario and hit the larger places through the summer time. It will be like one city per month, but we want to spread the word of the new album a little bit further than the borders of Sudbury."
Advance tickets to the Vintage Slang Album Release House Party is $10 and available online and at Cosmic Dave's Vinyl Emporium. Tickets at the door are $15.
All guests will receive a free digital copy of the album Standing Still.

The Vintage Slang story started in 2014 as a rag-tag group of music veterans formed with the idea of writing rock music - the kind of rock music they grew up listening to but somehow seemed to have disappeared in the last decade. Inspired by the likes of Big Wreck, I Mother Earth, Our Lady Peace, Matthew Good, Sloan, the Trews and many other Canadian rock greats, Vintage Slang set out to continue the tradition of producing great Canadian rock 'n' roll. In a short time, Vintage Slang has gone from playing basements to big stages. They've shared the stage with rock legends such as The Trews and Honeymoon Suite and hit a high point last year with a gig at the historic Kee to Bala.
On March 23rd, 2018, the band's second album "Broken Town" was released. Look for Vintage Slang to be out playing their high energy stage show at a stage near you this summer.
