Bio
The Variety Picnic blends smooth electro pop with a slight dash of comedy making this project one of a kind.
Formed in Orlando, FL in 2009, the Variety Picnic began creating comedy songs accompanied by lavish music videos. The first music video, Ode To Morse, was inspired by a wonderful man named Kevin Morse. Lead singer and synth guru, Patrick Mahan, decided to pursue the creation of a comedy concept album with a broader appeal. Frequently appearing in the music videos is Earl Babbich, World Class Gentleman and one of Planet Earth's greatest guitarists. Over the course of 2009, the trio began writing more songs that would ultimately become their debut album, Sweet Jams.
In March 2010, Sweet Jams was unleashed to the world. A release party was held in Orlando, FL and featured the groups first live performance. Their music video for "Babymaker" was nominated in Big Vision Empty Wallet's Best Comedy Short competition held in New York City.
After this era, the group parted ways but Patrick continued releasing music under the Variety Picnic name. The second album, Synth City, took five years to complete and was released on January 1st, 2016. The album moved away from comedy and was a more serious approach to their synth pop sound.
Earl Babbich made his triumphant return to the picnic in May 2016 on a single called "Turquoise Eyes". A video appeared on the group's YouTube page in the fall of 2016 showing Earl playing his solo.
The reformed original lineup is planning a September release of their 3rd album. A reunion show is planned for September 9th, 2016 in Atlanta, GA.
