Peterborough band Union City has licensing deals with E!TV and Oxygen Network and will have its music played on a variety of U.S. television shows including E!TV's Keeping up with the Kardashians.

Band leader Matt Crowley said the band's EP These Days would also be played on Khloe and Kourtney take Miami and the Kim Kardashian produced series The Spindustry.

MTV Networks have licensed the band's music for the upcoming series The City (The Hills spinoff), new comedy sketch show Warren the Ape and an upcoming season The Real World. "Union City's material was also optioned by the Oxygen Network for its series The Stylist and The Bad Girls Club," said Crowley
This is a result of Union City's association with Minneapolis-based Tinderbox Music, an American music promotions and distribution company, which released the band's first single, These Days, on April 6 to U.S. college radio, said Crowley, in an Examiner interview.

Within a month, the band went into the American College Music Journal top 200 chart, catching the attention of several television networks, he said.

Crowley said some stations in Texas and New York have taken their music and "played the heck out of it."

Crowley said the band hopes this will mean increased touring in the U.S. and Canada.

"Canada hasn't taken notice of us as yet," said Crowley, he said but hopes the exposure south of the border will translate to more touring in Canada.

Union City was featured on the Monday, Aug. 9 edition of The Wolf's Five Minutes of New Rock segment. It is set to play the second Five Minutes of New Rock Summer Party show Friday at The Historic Red Dog, Hunter St. W. Union City will play a mid-afternoon performance on Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Canadian Wake Board Open, at Beavermead Park with bands like The Spades, USS and Down With Webster.

Peterborough band Union City's ongoing association with Minneapolis-based Tinderbox Music is paying huge dividends.

The band -- compirsed of Matt Crowley, J. Kent Randall, Ben Anderson, Jason Wells and Mark Chamberlain -- recently inked licensing deals to have songs from its recent EP These Days featured in E!TV's Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Khloe And Kourtney Take Miami and the Kardashian-produced series The Spinindustry.

If that's not enough, MTV Networks has opted to license Union City's music for new series The City, new comedy sketch show Warren The Ape and an upcoming season of The Real World.

But wait...there's more. The band's material has also been optioned by The Oxygen Network for its series The Stylist and The Bad Girls Club.

Back in early April, Tinderbox Music, a music promotions and distribution firm, released Union City's first single, These Days, to U.S. college radio. By May, the band moved into the American College Music Journal's top 200, which brought the networks calling.

Local live music fans can catch up with Union City tonight (Friday) at the Historic Red Dog, where the band shares the stage with Gloss. And on Aug. 29 at the Canadian Wakeboard Open at Beavermead, Union City will play a mid-afternoon gig as part of that weekend's concert showcase. - MyKawartha.com

The last time that I saw Union City they were known as The Scene, and I was very impressed with their authentic Brit-Pop sound. Well, in a matter of only a few months, the band has changed their name, morphed from a four piece into a three piece and released an outstanding EP. But the sound that they have carefully honed has remained very much in tact.

Their show at The Mod Club on Saturday night was touted as their Toronto CD release show, although basically it was more of a warm up show for all those who came out to dance the night away afterwards. I was obviously one of the few who was there to actually see the band, but I wouldn't be surprised if their performance had won them a few more fans. Upon seeing them this time, as well as listening to the EP in heavy rotation this weekend, there's no doubt in my mind that the band has been feeding on a steady diet of all things musically British. They come across as a cool amalgamation of The Kinks and early Oasis, minus the 'tude. On some of the more slightly downbeat numbers, such as Nowhere Left To Hide, vocalist Matt Crowley's voice sounds eerily similar to Lee Mavers, the vocalist for The La's. This is awesome to me because The La's are one of those bands that I wish put out more stuff. The other two members of the band are Jason Wells on bass and Mark Chamberlain on drums.

Like last time, their set was relatively brief, consisting of only a handful of songs, but the energy was highly infectious. This was heightened by the fact that there was some sort of bridal party stagette thing going on at the venue, and seeing as the girls were definitely making their presence known, the band dedicated their set to them. Also like last time, the band pulled out their cover of The Beatles' She Said, She Said, and Mod Club founder and Platinum Blonde frontman Mark Holmes joined them onstage for the vocals. Like the show, the CD also blasts by, clocking in at a rapid fire 21 minutes, forcing repeated listenings. All the songs are great but I highly encourage listening to the album closer Paris on auto repeat. This song is an example of pure rock 'n roll. No gimmicks. No posing. No catering to the MTV crowd. Just pure, unadulterated, authentic, classic sounding rock 'n roll. I almost forgot what that sounded like.

I highly encourage picking up this CD when you get the chance. I know that it's available at their live shows. They'll be at The Moho in Peterborough on June 6th and the live lounge in Ottawa on June 13th.
