"Tyler Wrighteous: Making Music His Way"

Wrighteous leaned over the stage, passionately holding the microphone. The rapper had just finished a dynamic set at Kingdom in Richmond, VA, but he still had a few words for the crowd.

“This is what I want to do with my life. This is it,” he shared with the crowd. Setting the mic down, he stepped off the stage and was greeted with love, respect and admiration by fans.

This was June 30at Richmond’s music festival Epic Fest, and months later, Wrighteous still considers that a turning point for him. That’s the night everything came full circle. That’s the night he knew he was pursuing the right dream.

Hailing from Stafford, 21 year old MC and rapper Tyler Wrighteous grew up surrounded by music. With two musically included parents, music was unavoidable. Before rapping, Wrighteous sang in his school’s choir, but it wasn’t until his senior year of high school that he began rapping. He hasn’t looked back since.

Merging his vocal abilities with complex yet relatable lyrics, Wrighteous is crafting his own path. He isn’t just making music for the stereotypical rap fan, but making music for all, even those that are often without a voice.

“Everyone has a story,” said the rapper. “No one wants to hear the story of a suburban choir kid, but why not? Wouldn’t you want to hear about people from your situation? Everyone deserves to be heard.”

Exactly one week after first arriving at ODU, Wrighteous released his mixtape, “The Path Less Taken” on Aug. 31, 2010. Since then, he’s only released one other mix-tape, “Live & Learn.”

Unfortunately for new listeners, Wrighteous’s “Live & Learn” did not wow the rapper like his earlier release did and is no longer available for download. “It wasn’t complete,” shrugged the rapper.

But he hasn’t allowed that to hold him back. Complete with the hit “Naya Rivera” that not only caught the attention of hip-hop fans but the actress Naya Rivera herself, he released “The Nice Guy EP” this past summer. He also has collaborated with many local rappers on a multitude of singles.

Wrighteous prides himself in being a diverse artist, possibly even surprising a few with his personal musical preferences. “Hip-hop bores me sometimes. Too many clones of Jay-Z or Kanye [West] for the past three –four years. I get tired of hearing that,” he said.

Wrighteous hopes to further introduce listeners to his diverse taste with his upcoming projects.

Beyond his musical abilities, Wrighteous beams with positivity. “If you think positive, you’ll get positive results. If you think negative, you’ll get negative results,” explained the rapper.

Wrighteous has turned the classic idiom, “cloud nine” not only into a more unique phrase, but a movement.

His phrase “Ninth Nimbus” is his unique way of not only reminding himself, but those surrounding him, to remain on cloud nine. Embodying inspiration and passion for their dreams, “Ninth Nimbus” further unifies fans of Wrighteous. Supporters of the positive message behind “Ninth Nimbus” are affectionately known as “Nimbus Niners.”

Through his undeniable passion and positive nature, ODU’s Wrighteous has proven himself as an unstoppable force. As fans new and old anticipate his upcoming release “Hall of Mirrors,” they can check out his current releases at thatkidwrighteous.bandcamp.com. The rapper can also be found on YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr and Soundcloud.

"SHOW REVIEW: Epic Fest 2012"

Another artist that caught my eye was an emcee named Wrighteous. He hails from North Stafford, and definitely is a crowd favorite. I take it he has been to RVA before, because the crowd knew his songs. He has such a great stage presence and an ear for real Hip Hop. His style reminds me a lot of De La Soul, mixed with a little Lupe Fiasco. He has a lot of fun on stage, and with help from some of his comrades from the same area, he branded his mark on the RVA. - RVA Magazine

"Event Recap: Slapdash’s Epic Fest 2013 in Richmond, VA"

My two favorite performances came back to back, towards the tail end of the night. The crowd’s attention fluctuated throughout the night, as expected due to the high volume of performances. That all stopped when Stafford native Tyler Wrighteous took the stage, commanding the attention of the entire venue with his dominant stage presence. By the end of his set he had the entire audience engaged in his call-and-respond cues. - http://artisticmanifesto.com/2013/07/11/event-recap-slapdashs-epic-fest-2013-in-richmond-va-epicfest2013/

"Listen to tylerWrighteous’ Impressive New Track “CHEATCODE”"

VA music maker tylerWrighteous is back with a mad dope new track entitled “CHEATCODE.”

It’s produced by Rozwell, and is definitely tyler’s best work yet. The energy behind his verses is sensational, and the passion in his words is just great. The way his verses mesh with the production from Rozwell is everything on this track, and all adds up to a great end product. - GOODMUSICALLDAY

Bio

Born in Warner Robins, GA, tylerWRIGHTEOUS is a vocalist/producer who was born to two musically inclined parents, making his love and unwavering dedication to music excellence almost genetic. Primarily a singer in school & church choir, the Georgia born, Virginia-raised artist began battle rapping in middle school as a defensive mechanism against bullies. Influenced by dynamic artists like Kanye West, Damon Albarn, Michael Jackson, Donald Glover ( Childish Gambino), Kid Cudi, Mike Shinoda, Q-Tip and others, he began exploring his songwriting abilities at 18. While Tyler has been releasing amateur projects since 2009, it wasn’t until his June 2012 performance at Richmond’s independent music festival Epic Fest that he realized music was indeed his calling.

Tyler continued to gain buzz in the DMV as one of the more surprising voices in the genre by showcasing his talents in various shows & events spanning from Washington DC down to Virginia Beach. Tyler’s unique lyrical prowess, along with his spontaneous ear for interesting production has caught the attention of the likes of XV, Naya Rivera, and Grammy Award-Winning Songwriter Jon Bellion.

Since then the statuesque rapper has continued to promote individuality and positivity through staggered single releases and performances throughout Virginia. His official debut project NIMBUS is slated for a Fall 2016 release date. “nimbus” is titled after 9th Nimbus, his brand and personal mantra that stresses the importance of self-identity and following dreams. With features including Masego & Sunny Moonshine (Sunny & Gabe), NIMBUS will be Tyler’s proper introduction as an artist and a standout for his area and his generation.

“For me, it took 24 years to become okay with loving myself on more days than none... I still have my days, we all do, but we have to embrace who we are. Because if not...then what's our identity? What's our purpose?” questions Tyler. “I just want to be an example that you can be yourself and be happy, successful, whatever. Let the hard times happen. Learn from them. And then grow.”
