I did a double take when I first heard the vivid and evocative voice of Chloe Jones—vocalist, songwriter, and keyboardist of the duo This Sound Will Save You, (the other half of TSWSY is the talented producer and multi-instrumentalist Matt Fudge). The following morning I awoke with “I Try” and “Us” alternately sliding around in my head, and I’ve been a fan ever since.
Their 2012 EP, A Place to Start, and 2013’s full length debut album, Let the Night Lead You, showcased enthralling lyrics paired with a voice that calls to mind Kate Bush, and sexy stirring beats that makes you want to dance, and dream. Both illustrated that TSWSY’s dark shimmery electro-pop was worlds away from mainstream bubble gum territory.
Now, as they work on a forthcoming release, Chloe and Matt discuss how a routine collaboration turned into a dream duo, and how their sound is evolving back to where it all began. - the Winehouse Mag
Halifax electronic-hued pop trio This Sound Will Save You are gearing up for the release of Let the Night Lead You, the full-length follow-up to last year's debut EP, A Place to Start. They stopped by Exclaim! to perform a number off the album.
Stripped down to an acoustic guitar, floor tom and midi keyboard, the trio delivered a very different rendition of the electo-pop tune "Sacrifice," which will be on their forthcoming album Let the Night Lead You. You can watch the performance below.
This Sound Will Save You will be performing at Revival in Toronto on March 22 for Popguru's 15th Anniversary Party in association with Canadian Music Week.

Halifax's This Sound Will Save You are gearing up to release their debut EP, A Place to Start, digitally on October 16 through Popguru Sound & Vision. Now, the electronic-tinged pop trio are previewing their upcoming short-player with a video for the song "Sacrifice."
Directed by Derek Smith, the clip shows singer Chloe Kirston-Jones laying back in a stream while clutching flowers in a funeral-like pose. This is intercut with solemn-looking clips of the band performing the song and some slightly gruesome images of a bloody-looking bath. As for the song, it's a moody pop number with vocals that evoke the drama of Kate Bush.
This Sound Will Save You will perform at the the New Palace for Halifax Pop Explosion on October 20, and they plan to release the full-length Let the Night Lead You in February. The collection was laid down at Toronto's Revolution Recording and at the band's home studio in Halifax.

As a musician and producer, Matthew Fudge has spent plenty of time in the studio working with talented artists. But it wasn’t until he met Chloe Jones that something very special happened. “ I had never heard anyone sing like that,” Fudge explains, “ I knew she was going places, and I wanted to go along.” Together, Fudge and Jones formed This Sound Will Save You – a dynamic electro-pop band that lays analog synthesizers, guitars, and drums over an electronic backdrop, infused with Jones’ unique, ethereal voice.
The band’s debut album Let the Night Lead You is a solid first showing, featuring some heartfelt ballads, and a few catchy earworms that are sure to get you up and dancing. But it is certainly Jones’ otherworldly vocal styling that sets these guys apart.
In support of the album, the band has announced tour dates in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton. So what should we expect from their live show? “It pretty much turns into one big party,” says Fudge. “We start off with something slow and then build-up to the dancy stuff at the end.”
With Matt at the laptop, Chloe on the mic, and accompanied by Amber Jones on the drums, This Sound Will Save You promises a passionate fun-filled performance, showcasing a little electronic improv while bringing the magic of their recording sessions to the stage. “That’s the best part about this music,” Fudge explains, “People will get a closer idea of what’s gone on in the studio, because I can bring along the entire studio in a backpack … right down to the violins.” - Eastscene
Whether it was fate or just a stroke of luck that brought Chloe Jones and Matthew Fudge together to make music, the end result is all that truly matters.
About two years ago, Fudge, a producer, session musician and studio engineer was working in a Halifax recording studio. Jones, a native of Surrey, England, had booked a session to cut some songs she was working on. The rest, as they say, is history.
“Because I am an engineer and producer by trade, I spend a lot of time working in recording studios,” Fudge begins. “Chloe had come in intending to record songs for a solo EP that she was working on but soon discovered that we got along incredibly well. Not only was there a really unique connection between us, we also found that we brought out the best in each other in a creative respect. I had been contemplating making a big move with my own music and career and decided to just go for it after meeting Chloe. Music was something that really resonated between us.”
Matthew says that rather than using Chloe’s songs as a launching pad for their new group, they began writing songs from scratch. By his own estimates, he and Chloe ended up writing more than three times the more than 15 songs that found their way onto the group’s full length debut, Let The Night Lead You.
“We were writing music pretty much non-stop for two years. It became a big process because we have pretty high standards for ourselves. What we found as we got deeper into making the album is that we were keeping a lot of the tracks we had laid down for the demos of the songs. Typically, demos are used to get your ideas down. As we were re-recording the songs, however, we were finding quite often we got it right on the demo and decided to use those tracks.”
Matthew says that while many bands strive for perfection in the recording studio, experience has shown him that the emotion behind a song can quickly get sucked out by repeated attempts to get the “perfect” take. Stating that he would rather live with music that might not be technically perfect but is emotionally perfect is a good trade off in their books.
“Bands can definitely get mired in trying to capture the perfect take of a song, but Chloe and I found there was no need to make the songs absolutely perfect,” he says. “When you finish recording a track for a song and are excited by what just happened, there is no need for it to be perfect. We are content to accept what was created in the moment. If the songs are emotionally perfect, that is far more important to us.”
To Matthew’s point, the general public does seem to be connecting with the music of This Sound Will Save You. While the group intends to invest time touring this great country of ours, they have also attracted a significant amount of attention from Europe, where they have already toured twice now and hope to get back overseas for more performances in the near future.
“Right now, 90 per cent of our online plays are coming from Germany and Austria. We had a DJ in Manchester get behind what we’re doing, so it is all very encouraging to see from afar. So far, Europeans have been very receptive to what we are doing.
“I think they easily understand where we are musically coming from. Chloe has a British accent, which doesn’t hurt our chances, but ironically, when we play in Canada, people are surprised that we are from here,” he laughs.
While Matthew and Chloe are understandably excited to get back to Europe, getting the This Sound Will Save You name known in Canada is also priority. Acknowledging that the crowds are getting a little more familiar with the band every time they play in any given city in Canada, the road to success is a long one yet.
“We’ve played Toronto on three different occasions in the past six months, and the shows are getting better and better. It is encouraging to see some momentum behind us because every audience is obviously different from the one that came before it. We’re bound to encounter some challenges along the way; we are just starting out, after all. All in all though, we are pretty excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.
“We are very proud of our record and want to share this music with as many people as we can.” - Times & Transcript

Blending unexpected electronic arrangements with epic pop adventures, This Sound Will Save You is UK vocalist Chloe Jones and Canadian producer Matt Fudge. Their live show is a musical fruit smoothie bursting with analog synthesizers, acoustic sounds and computer based loops drenched in catchy melodies and tribal rhythms. - zVents
I am a musical glutton, especially when it comes to ecstatic, impassioned pop performances like “Keep My Eyes Shut” from Halifax’s This Sound Will Save You. I could gorge myself on this synth-and-loops based confection all night long. Its a buzzy, all-out electronic assault that brings with it the spontaneity of a live band. Vocalist/keyboardist/songwriter Chloe Jones and producer/multi-instrumentalist Matthew Fudge (who are joined live by drummer Nico Orengo) met when she was making a solo EP and he was working in the studio. The pair immediately connected over their shared love of vocal driven pop, and started working together in 2011, unsure of the path they were on musically, but excited to see where it would lead them.
Firmly believing in the ethos that inspired their name, This Sound Will Save You aspire to make music an experience, from the live stage to the recorded product. They’ve been praised for their energetic live shows, and will soon unveil the work they’ve been doing in the studio, when their debut album, Let the Night Lead You is released on May 14th by Popguru. - Quick Before It Melts
When Chloe Jones arrived in Halifax, she wasn't sure how long she'd stay. The singer-songwriter had only visited Nova Scotia a few times but was sold enough to pack up her things and leave her home in England. Now, more than three years later, she's releasing her debut EP Old Palace. The album began to come to fruition when Jones was approached by Codapop's Doug Taylor after playing her set at a open mic. Next thing she knew she was in the studio, making lasting friendships and important collaborations with a group of studio musicians (most of whom still play with her band) and engineer Matt Fudge. Working with these like-minded and experimental musicians resulted in some interesting uses of sound (like recording the sound of an iPhone application, then manipulating it) that set Jones apart from other artists. "I just love unusual sounds and playing around," says Jones, who names Kate Bush as one of her inspirations. Later this spring she'll cross the pond to grace the stage at the London City Showcase, and at a few other gigs, to give Britain a little taste of Halifax.

Chloe Jones is starting over. Well, sort of. After getting warmed up with her debut EP, Old Palace, the UK native, who’s a classically trained pianist with a master’s in pop music, has a new plan. During a recent trip to London for some festival gigs, Jones and her like-minded bandmate Matt Fudge, decided to say bye-bye to their five-piece band and push forward as a duo. The two, under the moniker Dreamplane, are working on a full-length album which Jones calls a continuation of her March release. “It’s really important, more than ever now, to explore different things. There’s so much music out there, you really have to stand out,” she says looking forward to kicking up Old Palace’s electronic hints, strange sounds and synth. With a voice unlike other leading ladies in town, the girl who dreamt of being a concert pianist is about to remind Halifax what pop music is. - The Coast

Halifax, Canada based This Sound Will Save You blends unexpected electronic arrangements with epic pop adventures. Their live show has been described as Kate Bush meets M83 with analog synthesizers, buzzy guitars and computer based loops drenched in catchy melodies and dance floor rhythms. The band consists of vocalist/keyboardist/songwriter Chloe Jones and producer/multi-instrumentalist Matthew Fudge. They offer something unique to the usual live pop band or electronic DJ set by blurring the lines between the two and creating something that is both interesting and dynamic. Matthew switches between various instruments while programming loops and effects in real time. Chloe draws the audience in with her energetic performances while singing and playing multiple synthesizer parts.
In 2013, This Sound Will Save You released its debut album, Let the Night Lead You in Canada. They are currently working on a new EP for the new year. "We're excited about releasing our music and having more people finally hear it. The response so far to the songs has been overwhelming. It's like having a hidden secret you're unable to tell someone and then finally being able to let it out!", laughs Matthew. The band has performed at the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg, Germany; club shows in London, England, the Halifax Pop Explosion, Pop Montreal and Canadian Music Week. Being able to have their music exposed to a wider audience is something the pair is anxiously awaiting. "We have never been more excited about the music were creating as we are now. We really believe in what were doing. Whatever happens, we feel as though were working on something we both feel strongly about", says Chloe with a smile.

'It's like a Kate Bush and M83 club sandwich. I love it!'
Sophie Sveinsson, 96.9 All FM Manchester, UK
'So much good electronic music coming out of Canada these days! This Sound Will Save You just released their first album Let the Night Lead You. Here, they are sounding like a really cool cross between Austra and Parallels on Us.'
Alt Altman, Silent Shout.
'This Sound Will Save You makes a bold statement, but underneath it is a dreamy haze of electro-pop that's adventurous.'
The Coast
'The band's emotive tunes bear traces of vintage 1980s electro-pop, particularly thanks to Chloe Jones' vocals, which channel the dark drama of Kate Bush on the single "Sacrifice." Other songs take a slightly softer, subtler approach, with highlights including the bouncy "Wherever I Go" and "Face the Fire."
Alex Hudson, Exclaim
'The majority of the songs are drenched in bright sparkling synths. Chloe Jones sweet and sugary vocals can be gentle (If We Only Knew) and yet strong (Girl in the Golden Hair). The latter, a tune about a girl with her own rules has one of the best lines, The hipsters are crying because they're old news'.
