The Red Boy

The Red Boy describe themselves as “a no nonsense, kick-ass rock & roll band from the
relentless depths of suburban hell,” and I can’t argue with that. The Red Boy is cranking dirty,
groovy garage rock out of the “suburban hell” as they describe it, that is Brampton, Ontario. The Red Boy released their first EP “Russian Roulette” 5 years ago, and on May 31st they’re following it up with their self-titled album.


The band is releasing their new album in Toronto at Cherry Cola’s and if you’re in the area, you aren’t going to want to miss it. The album is six tracks of in your face rock n roll. Right from the first track threesome, you get a great idea of what you’re in for. William Bennet’s dirty and distorted yet hooky guitar parts along with his abrasive vocals and the powerful driving drums of Richard Mohammed that keep each song grooving along.



The band has just released a lyric video for the single “All We’ve Got,” to tie us over until the 31st. The song greatly demonstrates the bands strong song writing skills and the energy emitted by The Red Boy. It’s a great track, and has a pretty cool lyric video to go along with it. My favourite track of the album however, is 66. The track starts off with a great guitar riff, which instantly reminded me of the style of Andrew Stockdale, but as soon as the vocals came in, it was something totally their own. The Red Boy have their own unique sound, which is hard to describe. Dirty, heavy, abrasive, groovy and energetic are a few of the words I would use to describe the album. The Red Boy comes off as a nihilistic alternative punk release ready to rip the listener’s head off with the opening feedback of “Threesome”. The band sounds like the bastard child of Spinerette and Sonic Youth spewing distortion freely and wearing its heart on its sleeve while maintaining its apathetic tongue in cheek.

Alternatively voyeuristic tracks like “The Overseer” run the gambit of being carelessly imprecise while remaining rough around the edges yet retaining melody. The ripsaw distortion of “All We’ve Got” leaves much to be desired by the band’s live performance.

Fan of 90’s grunge looking for a fix of a new Mudhoney album combined with a punk rock quality and simplistic alternative song structures can get it right here.

BRAMPTON – This time last year, Logan McNab could walk independantly. Today, the 10-year-old boy cannot manage even one step without assistance, and his only chance to fully regain the ability to walk has a hefty price tag attached.

Born with a brain injury and Cerebral Palsy, Logan suffers from severe tightness and muscle deterioration in his limbs – in particular, his legs – and without drastic and expensive intervention, the boy’s condition will continue to worsen.

So, when Brampton resident Will Bennett learned that his friend Dan McNab needs $100,000 to pay for a surgery that will turn things around for Logan, he decided to do something.

Bennett, the guitarist/vocalist for Brampton-based band The Red Boy, has organized a fundraising event – Logan’s Hope – with the hopes of raising $5,000. It will be a showcase of local musical talent – with seven bands on the bill – and include raffles and prizes. The all-ages event takes place Jan. 24 at Spot One with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15, and are available through band members or at Brampton’s Long & McQuade.

“Logan and his family are currently trying to raise $100,000 for a surgery in the U.S. that will allow him to walk on his own,” said Bennett, who works with Logan’s father Dan at Brampton’s Long & McQuade. “It's still considered an experimental surgery despite its track record, so unfortunately they will receive no help from OHIP.”

McNab, who moved from Brampton to Orangeville a few years ago, said his son requires Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy to correct the effects of Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy.

“This surgery has a perfect success rate,” said McNab, noting that the doctor who performs the surgery is very selective about who he treats, and feels Logan is a prime candidate.

And, Logan has expressed frustration with his decline in abilities.

“It frustrates him,” said his father. “He was really excited when he was taking his first real independent steps last year, and over the summer he really started to have problems with that and he was very upset.”

McNab is touched by the efforts of Bennett, and hopes the community will come out to support his son, as well as the lineup of local talent.

“I’m very honoured to have a co-worker and friend who is willing to put in this effort to do something like this for my son,” said McNab. “I really hope there’s a good turnout as well to support these local musicians.”
