Formed in early 2015, The Red and Blues are a bluesy-rock band that plays music focused on Native American themes and issues. The band was conceptualized and created at Haskell Indian Nations University and has been consistently performing in the Midwest area. Their first album, Hope Begins to Bloom, was self-released in August 2016. The album was created with aims to spread awareness of social injustices against indigenous people across the globe.Amidst growing tensions of Indigenous sovereignty, the title track to the album, Bloom, is a stunning example of people coming together to fight for what's right, with fire in our hearts. The theme of which being no matter how many time we are knocked down, we will persevere. The album was recorded and produced at Haskell Indian Nations University with help from the Haskell Band. The Red And Blues chose Haskell as the primary studio for their stunning establishment and as a symbol of hope for Indigenous peoples as the University was once a boarding school with a primary function to detach native children from their family and cultures. The recording is a testament to Native American perseverance and freedom. The Red and Blues seek to bring their music to a variety of audiences and their style reflects that. Eschewing the New Age associations that many modern Native Musicians often have, this band focuses on edgier sounds. Marrying important Native themes with a bluesy, hard-rockin’ soul, this punchy three-piece can mellow you out or bring the house down. A wide variety of music has influenced The Red and Blues and their sound reflects that.Rain Charger, a member of the Itazipcola Lakota tribe, plays bass and sings and was raised on country, blues and metal. Marcus Barnoskie, the lead singer and guitarist, cut his teeth on grunge, classic rock and Motown. Kahheetah Barnoskie, the drummer, grew up listening to alternative rock, hip-hop, and classic pop. The Barnoskies, brother and sister, have Creek, Cherokee and Pawnee heritage. Not purely focused on Native American issues of North America, the trio have been working diligently to bring awareness of indigenous injustice across the globe.
