[FOLK ROCK] On their debut self-titled release, California-based four-piece the Mondegreens rely on tight three-part harmonies and vocals reminiscent of the Avett Brothers. Their style melds acoustic rhythm with sometimes fuzzy, sometimes twangy electric guitar licks. Bassist David Friedlander’s raw, soulful-meets-woeful rasp leads “Sharpen Your Claws” as heavy-blues-influenced electric riffs billow dangerously in and out of the background, while “Big City Blues” is an undemanding diddy backed by enough “oohs” and “ahs” to bring to mind a barbershop quartet. It’s not new by any means, but the Mondegreens get by on emotion alone—simple, harmony-driven emotion.

Bio
Founded in Chico, CA in 2012 by close friends with a common belief in honest music, The Mondegreens are comprised of Jack Knight (vox/lead guitar), David Friedlander (vox/bass guitar), and Russell Rabut (vox/rhythm guitar). In 2013 the band elevated their sound by bringing Matt Misquez (drums) into the fold.
The boys put a young face and youthful exuberance into their music, which has its roots in classic heartfelt folk, 60’s era tight harmonies, unabashedly exposing lyrics, and a twist of modern indie rock. Constantly focused on improving and expanding, while also maintaining an appreciation and connection with the qualities that have been inspiring to them in the past, The Mondegreens draw inspiration and influence from a variety of artists, such as The Beatles, Neil Young, Grateful Dead, Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear, and The Avett Brothers.
Stepping over the pandering cliches as one steps over a puddle, The Mondegreens create thoughtful, intelligent music, which overflows with excitement and honesty to provide an accessible respite from what can often seem a static industry.
