The Kinky Fingers

Instead of opting for the dirty sound favored by many musicians who draw inspiration from '60s surf and garage rock, The Kinky Fingers have gone for cleaner, clearer melodies. The group's desert-haunted songs might cause listeners to mistake the Fingers for yet another latter-day psychedelic act -- but while it's true that the guitar work is possessed of an open-skies sound akin to that of bands like Spindrift, the songwriting owes much more to older artists such as Dick Dale and Roy Orbison. The Kinky Fingers are an American Rock, and “Santa Fe” Surf trio whose sounds pull from the vaults and traditions of American music coast to coast, Canada to Mexico; blending elements of 50s and 60s rock, western swing, surf music, country, folk, jazz and the blues.

There’s quite a tale to their inception too, frontman, poet and multi-instrumentalist Tayler Doyle learned to play guitar while working as a prison guard for two developmentally disabled sex offenders in rural northern Colorado. He was later fired for “having too much musical equipment”.

When he wasn’t accepted into Jazz school he dropped out of university to travel around the country to his favorite musician’s childhood hometowns; a pilgrimage that would take him from Hibbing Minnesota to New Orleans, crisscrossing through the south, along highway 61, and eventually to Austin, Texas. He learned the American roots musics organically while playing in local music clubs and coffee shops along the way and when Doyle returned he started a new band: The Kinky Fingers. Kinky Fingers was their name and boy were they were riding the southern gospel wave. The front man sang with wonderful vibrato and a southern twang while his band mates took their sound to a more alternative level. Kinky Fingers had the crowd pumped – either that or they hired the people in the front row to really freak out. Everyone was gravitating towards the front, the level of excitement even sent two punk guys into a heavy, very public, makeout sesh. they are laying some good foundation for where to go next with their enthusiastic blend of styles and sounds. They are a classic product of their home country, taking rock & roll inspiration from all over and happily transforming it into something that could have only come from their neck of the woods. It is notable for some really good performances, particularly in “Tofino” with a great reverb-drenched surf guitar, as well with the traditional country-waltz “Dead in Yer Grave”.

Started out as a collective, “White River City” is the second of three EP’s that they’re releasing as part of something called “The EP Series”(The first one was “Make you Happy”). Many musicians playing with the idea of having a band that can change: from the arrangements to the basic sound. So nothing about from Rolling Stones “Sticky Fingers” but an easy listening and moving sound in a simple world and at the end just traditional Americana music. If they put their own stamp and chose more carefully the songs of their next release they will probably take off. - Rock Blog Review
