"Album Review: CW Allen (Chicago, IL) – Playing My Part EP"

Storytelling is almost the best way to deliver a message in Hip Hop. And when it comes to storytelling CW Allen delivers in the Dope 5 track EP “Playing My Part“. With the self titled track “Playing My Part” & “Live It”, these tracks are highly recommended for anyone out there who are looking for some great Hip Hop. “We On” is another banger that really sounds like something that would be featured in a Movie or something. We have to give props to the producing on this EP due to the fact that all the beats mix with the storytelling extremely well.
When is comes to Chicago Hip Hop, CW Allen is the perfect representative for Conscious, Lyrical, Up Beat Hip Hop…………..UndergroundHipHopBLOG.com - undergroundhiphopblog

"CW Allen (Chicago, IL) – Q&A Interview"

Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?

I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. I began making Hip Hop in 2005 after I graduated high school. It started out as a hobby of free styling and developed into a love for creating songs and stories.
What influences you in making Hip Hop?

I honestly began writing music when a girl I was dating challenged me to do our church’s open mic. She told me I needed to “stop being scary” and, I couldn’t let her words go unanswered. After that open mic the feedback I got was pretty positive. Soon after I found myself getting invited to more open mics and hip hop events. As time went on I saw that people were really impacted by my messages so I used it to continue encouraging my listener.

Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?

My music is very transparent and that allows my listeners to connect. I feel an obligation make music that empowers my listeners to become better people and connect with God. It doesn’t do my listeners any good if all I do is talk about how great I am and never give them hope and inspiration. I talk about life, love, hurt, and faith. I feel like most of my peers aren’t doing that anymore. Some make amazing music but that’s where it ends and It doesn’t transcend to the next generation.
Also my music truly reflects my Midwest roots. Over the years I’ve rapped over all kinds of beats and instruments with various rhythm schemes. I think the diversity of my music gives a Kanye-ish feel.
Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?

Most of my collabs thus far have been independent artist in my local region, very talented guys and girls but probably not anyone your familiar with. I hope that as the years go on I’ll get the opportunity to work with some well-known artist like Justin Timerlake. JT kills just about every piece of music he touches, and it maybe a taboo for me to say this, he might be the Michael Jackson of our generation. I would also love to work with Andy Mineo, dude is a lyrical monster!

Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

Underground Hip Hop is the heartbeat of the underdog. For all the artist who’s sound isn’t accepted or recognized by the mainstream. Underground Hip Hop is our platform.
Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?

Early on I wouldn’t say I was influenced by anyone style of production, but as I’ve grown in my craft I would say I love rhyming over that No ID /Kanye West sounds. A great blend of instruments and soul with chest knocking kicks. Their production has a story long before lyrics are added. I loved the production of Kanye’s “Graduation” album all the way through.

I’ve been getting production for my new project from a local producer here in Chicago named Geeda, my brother in law who works at Universal Studios, ATripp, and 2012 Grammy award-winning producer, Big Juice. These fellas brought the heat and I working hard not to disappoint.

I would love to get some beats from Kanye. He’s like a Beethoven of Hip Hop, and he creates timeless music. I think it would also be cool like to work with Timberland, and The Neptunes.

Any current or future projects you are promoting?

I’m currently promoting my new EP “Playing My Part”. My DJ and I have been doing shows in multiple cities since its release in December. Our hope is to build our fan base and make money to donate to our community center on the South side of Chicago, Sunshine Gospel Ministries. They are building a recording and dance studio for the teens in the neighborhood.

Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of your latest EP? Also/ what was the idea or concept description about your Album Art Cover.

As I began thinking through my project, I quickly realized I needed money to complete it so I decided to do an Indiegogo campaign to raise the money. I was able to raise $3,000 in 21 days and begin my work. We expressed our desire to help raise money for our community’s high school recording studio, and to create responsible Hip Hop in the Chi.
As we began the creative process I realized that I wanted my production to match the attitude of the lyrics I was writing. My lyrics shared about my struggles with my faith, the neighborhood around me, being broke, and my new marriage. I couldn’t use a light sonic mood for this one so I asked my producers to make it the sound darker.

As I listened to four of the five songs I had completed it was clear that this project reflected the title track. PMP reflected hundreds and thousands of people who have been given a purpose and dreams but have little encouragement to pursue them. This project not only reflected listeners, but it reflected me, a kid who always struggled with low self-esteem. As I thought of my story, it seemed like my personal graphic novel through music. That gave me the idea to design my artwork like a graphic novel.

Where can we find your music and info?

My music can be found on iTunes and all major retailers. I’m also on Reverbnation (reverbnation.com/cwallenmuzik), Myspace (myspace.com/cwallenmuzik), and Facebook (facebook.com/cwallenmuzik)and Twitter (@cw_allen)
Any shout outs?

I would like to shout out my lovely wife Jacqui and my family. DJ Ruckus, Point Ash and the Transparent Muzik team. Insomniac studio, and all those who contributed to my career thus far. You have all been such a blessing. Last but not least My Lord and savior Jesus Christ, you have forever changed my life. - undergroundhiphopblog

CW asks real life questions, connecting his faith with true experiences. CW says, “I want to make music that impacts my listeners. I think that so often we avoid the tough questions and many artists stray away from their true feeling about situations.” CW has performed all over the country in bars, schools, camps, and at conferences. He has opened for artists such as Grammy award recipient This’l and Billboard charting Hip Hop artist Flame. He is driven to make music that reaches the heart of his listeners regardless of faith background. He is currently in the production phases of his sophomore album, and his latest EP, “Playing My Part” can be found at cwallenmuzik.com and all digital retailers.

Born and raised in Cleveland, OH, CW is not a stranger to tough circumstances. Both his parents struggled with drug addiction, which left CW with few positive influences in his early childhood. On a summer trip to Michigan, his cousin introduced him to God while playing video games. “We were playing Mortal Kombat and he did a fatality on me. There was a hell scene or something and because it was 1999, I asked him if he believed that the world was going to end in 2000. That’s when he began to share the about God with me. He broke down the truth about me being born in sin, what Jesus did for me, and how He wants to change me. It totally rocked me.”

Following high school CW’s faith met his other love, music. Through “Youth for Christ” programs, he met with several other young men interested in music and maturing in their faith. They called themselves The Bruthahood. “We were waking up at 5 in the morning and doing bible study. We would freestyle for hours, just playing around. Eventually, me and two other guys got together and started writing, but at that point I was terrified of performing so it was just a hobby.”

In 2008 CW’s freshman project, Zeal for the King, was released under EQ Entertainment Inc. Although the project’s sales fell below expectations, the disappointment inspired him to work that much harder as an artist. In 2009 CW left Cleveland attend college in Chicago. “When I got to Chicago no one knew who I was musically at all, so there were no expectations and no negative vibes. There were no stigmas holding me back. So I wrote a mix tape and it was so much better than my previous work. I began learning a lot in Bible College about God’s heart for people and desire to use me in his plan. Jesus saved people from their sin but he also fed people and healed people. I know now that I can’t forget that it’s more than just telling people about the God’s love but actually tangibly being God’s love in the midst of their struggle. The hood I grew up in isn’t normal to me anymore, I want to help it become better.” - Brat Fest

"C|C Sunday Music Review for the Week of June 6th, 2014"

Overall Thoughts:
good rap with good messages of life and living. Uplifting ideas and looking at how the past can try to beat us down, but through Jesus we have the power to make it though. We can do what we are called to

Recording Thoughts:
Good … Professional

Stand Outs:
“LFAL” – I liked the idea of this love song seen as something God is behind instead of just the focus on one or two. Our goals should entwine so nicely that our lives can never be pulled apart.

“Live It” – this song captures both the times we feel we can step up.. and at the end how we can feel like we cannot. In Christ… we can. Trust in him. Amen

Bio

A dream deferred is not a dream denied; or so the lead track on CW Allen’s self-titled album goes on to explain; “You ever have a dream/ you felt you couldn’t reach/but you knew you had to try/ or you’d never have peace.” “Dream Baby” is the slogan that CW Allen pulls his listeners into, revealing the honest truth about artist struggles, including selling just 9 albums for his first release over 10 years ago. Climbing back from a deficit is just one of the ways this self-titled project introduces people to who CW Allen is; a dreamer and a believer. Allen recruited Grammy & Dove award winning Alex “Juice” Hitchens (produced on Lecrae’s album “Gravity”) long-time friend and collaborator Fred “FC on the beat” Council, and Chicago-based producer Charles “Geeda” Cornelius (produced “Dum Dum” by Tedashii feat. Lecrae) for the production. A mixture of Trap, R&B, Soul, and Boom bap, culminates in personal anthems meant to challenge people to remove the baggage and clutter from their life to move forward.

Utilizing subtle lyrics over hard beats, songs like “Soft Flex” addresses black lives and the recent Charlottesville, VA protests, he also takes a jab at self-proclaimed internet activists: “Politics and torches got em’ feeling like a G / Wanna hang Kapernick cause the homie took a knee? /I don’t get it but I get it/all these patriots so deflated/ pro-life is celebrated when it’s black it’s complicated. New level / same devil/ New name same tweet/ and we all think a post same as getting in the street.” Going back to his love for comic book super heroes, a reoccurring theme in his music, songs like “Villain,” unmask the defeated foe sin. This villain deceives the heart and creeps in to destroy humanity. To reveal sin’s devastating affects Allen recruits fellow Chicago artists, Brother 3 and Tremaine Harris, to help paint an emotional masterpiece. Overcoming defeat requires the ultimate super hero, Jesus Christ as the song “Heroes Never Die” explains. Allen reaches out of the depths for the only hope that gives CW Allen the drive to “Dream Baby.”
