Persevering rock band the Castor Troys is representing Burlington in the Y108 Spring Music Festival battle of the bands as they take the stage for the final competition tomorrow night (Saturday) in Hamilton.
“We will be in the Last Band Standing Finals this Saturday at Corktown (Hamilton) and we can’t wait,” said vocalist Aaron Walsh. “We will be so proud when they announce we’re from Burlington. There are many bands from Burlington that are amazing and to say we won anything to do with Burlington blows our mind.
“The Burlington rock scene continues to thrive, and we couldn’t be happier to be a part of it. All four of us have been lifelong concert enthusiasts. Especially at the local level, it’s been exhilarating to watch the rise of bands like the Rainbow Butt Monkeys (Finger Eleven), Sarah Blackwood (Walk Off the Earth, the Creepshow), Slurpymundae (Idle Sons), Jersey, Silverstein and countless others.”
The hard rock band formed in 2009 with Walsh on vocals, Robert MacKenzie on guitar and Rick Beresford on drums. The group met obstacles like “cancer, hard times and unforeseen challenges” along the way but nothing stopped the band.
The group forged ahead in its love of music, influenced by the likes of Headstones and the Offspring and added Andrew Perrins, bass guitarist, to complete the line-up once again.
Now with battles under belts, the Castor Troys plans to spend some quality time in a recording studio this summer.
“We’ve been road testing our songs so this summer we’ll be dedicating time to putting out a new album,” said Walsh. “We’ve performed all over Burlington, Hamilton and Toronto so this summer we’ll spend a couple months recording. We are completing the recording phase of our album with Burlington’s Toneland Studios this summer and we will be gigging heavily come August with all-new songs.”
The band has previously released a recording of their single April’s Gone in May.
“When we write our songs, it’s a collaborative effort,” noted Walsh. “It usually starts with a few chords and everyone chips in. I take the recording we put together in rehearsal and find a quiet place (to) write what the story meant to me. We like to tell stories people can relate to. We’ve written tributes to people passed away, or about stories that have inspired me.”

The Castor Troys are a story-telling hard rock band from Hamilton, Ontario. Through lyrics that tell tales of war heroes, bank robbers and clandestine lovers, this intrepid four-piece peddles true stories and truer fiction. Drawing inspiration from bands like Headstones, Social Distortion, Motörhead, The Offspring and Iron Maiden, The Castor Troys craft fiery and infectious songs that draw you in and don’t let go.
Taking their band name from a character in a John Woo film, The Castor Troys are a jubilant mix of hard rock, punk, country and southern rock. “Castor Troy was the villain (played by Nicolas Cage) in Face/Off. He was elegant, flamboyant and stylish, instantly likeable, while at the same time single-minded and ruthless in his pursuit of his goals.” expands the band on their choice of name.
Formed in 2013, they released their debut full-length album “Come Hell or High Water” in May of 2015 and their 6 track EP “Legends Never Die” on November 9, 2018. Working with producer Andre Kaden Black and engineer Tal Vaisman (Ascot Royals) has refined the band’s sound and enabled them to capture the fierce energy of their live performance onto record.
