The Rusty Seesaws were established in 2015 by 4 students at Virginia Tech. Danny DeVincentis and Kevin Reilly had played music together for several years but didn't perform much in public.....mostly because they didn't have the patience to memorize enough songs from start to finish. Once Danny got a $100 banjo for Christmas they started jamming and were delighted to find out that many bluegrass tunes are just 3-4 chords. Easy to remember! They recruited Erin Maines and Connor Mount on bass and drums and quickly learned dozens of songs. The group has accumulated over 9,700 followers across Facebook, Instagram and TikTok by gigging around the mid-Atlantic, playing anywhere from rowdy bars to frat parties to historic venues.
Highlights of their music are fast clawhammer banjo and guitar, big choruses with tight vocal harmonies, dramatic tempo changes, guitar/harmonica/piano solos to transition between sections of the song and clever lyrics often making a social or political statement. Occasionally, TRS will take an old time song, write new words and make it their own. A great example would be their angsty, ironic and mildly offensive interpretation of "Old Time Religion."
