Potash Twins featured on NPR for their SXSW Second Line - NPR

Identical twin horn players Adeev and Ezra Potash have a name for their sort of musical Spidey sense.
One of the two, trumpeter Adeev or trombonist Ezra, will play a lick and stray from the song. One glance at the other, and they’re on the same page. They call it “twintuition.”

It’s a chemistry they’ve had since they were little — one that comes in handy for the Westside High School grads as a jazz act trying to make it in New York City.
“When two people grow up at the exact same time and learn to walk and talk at the same time, their communication skills are very unique,” Adeev said. “When we learned to play music at the same time, the whole communication factor came back into play.”
Three years ago, the twins left for New York with scholarships to music schools, connections from mentor Wynton Marsalis and their first album in hand, written and recorded in one week after graduation. Since leaving, they’ve begun to build their brand as jazz musicians, Instagram fashionistas and food bloggers.
In late March, the Huffington Post included them in “The 15 Most Stylish Twins on Instagram.” Posts on the “potashtwins” account show them wearing complementary outfits or their trademark sunglasses alongside celebrity chefs.
Their food blog, Double Stuffed, and companion YouTube channel have led to relationships with chefs such as Andrew Zimmern of Travel Channel fame. But at the core of the Potash twins is a love of jazz.
Adeev attends Purchase College, in the State University of New York system, learning under Dizzy Gillespie protégé Jon Faddis, while Ezra studies at the Manhattan School of Music on a full-ride scholarship.
They have performed at Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center, at festivals such as South by Southwest and in professional settings like the TEDxOmaha conference and the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting.
The brass brothers serve as co-artistic directors for north Omaha’s Love’s Jazz & Arts Center, where they perform and teach master classes, helping shape the center’s curriculum.
“When jazz was in the swing of things — no pun intended — that area was overwhelmed with jazz,” Adeev said. “We want to bring that back.”
They return to Omaha every couple of months. Sometimes they perform with local Vine stars Jack Johnson and Jack Gilinsky, whose older sister once took Adeev to a school dance. Some of Jack and Jack’s teen-heavy fanbase takes a liking to their music, Ezra said, but many post comments like, “Oh, my gosh, my mom would love this.”
Three years since leaving Omaha for the City that Never Sleeps, the twins are releasing their second album. Due out this fall, the album is being produced in Minneapolis by Steven Greenberg, writer and producer of “Funkytown,” the 1980 hit by his band Lipps, Inc.
The twins are hoping their new album and their energy on social media can help jazz attract young ears.
“We’re doing our best to introduce jazz and trumpet and trombones to people who wouldn’t otherwise listen to it,” Adeev said. “We’re really fortunate that we can jump on stage with Jack and Jack and record an album with the guy who produced ‘Funkytown’ and find our place within that.” - Omaha World Herald
