"The National Debt – “Capable”"

The National Debt’s eponymous debut album impresses with its eclectic reach, ranging from the electro-funk of “Spread the Gap” to lush folk-laden builder “Dead End Everything” and Morrissey-esque crooner “Capable.” The latter is particularly striking, described as an “indie electronica anti-theistic anthem.” The opening lines — “hit me, father, hit me / that’s all you seem to be capable of,” — combine with the “God is a coward,” chorus to certainly remind of Morrissey’s no-holds-barred lyrical approach and theatrical vocal delivery. The key-driven undercurrent is accompanied by guitars in the final moments, lifting the track from more understated ruminations into one capable of rock-forward expansion. Certainly, The National Debt’s album captivates with its various themes, styles, and melodic successes. Stream it in full on Spotify (here). - Obscure Sound

Bio

Spawning from a strong transition almost overnight, The National Debt combines an array of styles, from pop punk and surf rock to the intense folk stylings of A Hawk And A Hacksaw and the playful experimentation of a Sgt. Pepper’s era fab four. Based out of California, The National Debt seems to find a compelling niche by arranging frontman Nicholas Crespin’s (N.A.C.C.) singer/songwriter tunes for rock loving crowds, catching their eye with accordion and ukulele. These quirks are solidified with indie rock grooves from drummer Roman Rivera, lo fi and jazz cues from Camden Oltjenbruns, classical choral prowess from keyboardist Josh Bravo, and jaunty nu-funk guitar lines from Justin Vogel.

The unique sound has received much recognition and allowed them to build an audience quickly since the start of 2019. They will be on tour the summer of 2019, and planning much more for the future.
