The Mellow Relics are a group from Orlando, Florida that plays groove rock. The five-piece actually includes two veteran members of the Tallahassee music scene, being the drummer, Chris Jones and the saxophonist, Joe Capati. The performance by The Mellow Relics demonstrated the group’s masterful ability in combining elements of funk, soul and jazz. Slower grooves drew the audience’s focus towards the talented rhythm section. Thumping bass lines and rhythmic guitar strums provided a solid foundation on which the saxophonist could truly demonstrate his ability to deliver powerful, energetic solos. Faster songs exemplified the band’s immense talent in employing smooth improvisations over well-rehearsed song structures. The vitality and musicianship of the group ensured that the audience kept moving throughout the duration of their set. The amount of energy flowing throughout the venue afterwards did a much-needed job of restoring our stamina. - Zachary Taylor
The members of The Mellow Relics maintain that music is trending toward shifting “feels” such as evidenced by the latest releases from the Zac Brown Band and Mumford and Sons. They said that through guest appearances and changing focus and instrumentation, these bands are “no longer adhering to one specific style of music. They’re evolving into bands that can play music for more than just a singular fan base. They’re evolving to broaden. What sets The Mellow Relics apart is that we are already a step ahead of everyone else. Our sets consist of anywhere from reggae to jazz to funk to rock. We play music that anyone, woman or man, old or young, will enjoy.” - Kat Coffin

The Mellow Relics sound comprises of driving melodies from both the guitars and saxophone which are then smoothly balanced by the lines of the bass and vocals all held in synchrony by the drummer.
This naturally lends itself from the five different musical backgrounds each musician comes from. The drummer Chris Jones, began his practice as a metal player, the lead vocalist and lead guitarist Travis Morrison, from folk, the second guitarist and vocalist, Patrick Sullivan from reggae, the bass player, Garin Thomas from funk, and the saxophonist, Joe Capati from jazz.
Whether the song they play next has you on your feet dancing, in your seat bobbing, or by the bar clapping, rest assured, every song you hear will have you tapping your foot.
