Bio
On August 18. 1969, Juma Sultan performed on the greatest stage in Rock & Roll history as the percussionist for Jimi Hendrix’s band Gypsy Sun and Rainbow’s at Woodstock 1969. Jimi and Juma’s paths crossed years before in New York City. They became friends and performed and recorded together until Jimi’s tragic death on September 18, 1970. From that day Jimi’s music would live on.
Sultan performed on the Dick Cavett show with Jimi Hendrix and at a special show in Harlem, New York. He was interviewed extensively for the documentary films: Jimi Hendrix and Jimi Hendrix Live at Woodstock. You can also find him on approximately 12 of Jimi’s posthumous releases.
Juma Sultan’s musical talents span jazz, rock, blues, spirituals and world music (aboriginal music) throughout decades of performing, producing and recording.
Juma also recorded with Sonny Simmons, Archie Shepp, Noah Howard, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Aboriginal Music Society, Emmeretta Marks, Asha Nan.
