Ottawa’s The Fly Downs are set to release their long awaited debut full length “At This Point In Time” via Thousand Islands Records on April 16th, the album follows on from their debut EP, and as far I can tell their sole previous release, 2017’s “Pockets Out“. In the years that have passed since their debut release the band have expanded their line up and sound and have been steadily, and it must be said quite slowly, working towards the release of their thirteen track debut. The opening track ‘Till Death Us Do Party‘ is a dense chugging heavyweight blast of pop punk, but don’t be put off by the pop punk tag if that isn’t your thing, this is punk rock that borrows the unpolished elements from far and wide and wedges them into a pop punk soundtrack. Throughout “At This Point In Time” there are memorable, and it must be said, at times, familiar, riffs that are coupled with hooky choruses that are delivered with a hedonistic energy.
Each of the thirteen cuts, including the three singles drawn from the album, ‘Crashing Down‘, ‘Head Held High‘ and ‘Nowhere To Go‘, are chock full of hooks, riffs, breakdowns, gang vocals and all the other prerequisite elements of pop punk, these are blended with a touch of discordant punk rock as well as elements of everything from math rock and metalcore to hardcore and metal making guest appearances. The end result is that The Fly Downs are a chimera of a band heading down their own eclectic path, they could equally be argued to be a natural evolution from the pop punk pioneers sound whilst simultaneously sounding like the more refined cousins of the likes of Trashed Ambulance and Ariel Salad. “At This Point In Time” is a pop punk album at it’s heart, but rather than the predictable polished radio friendly sound you’d expect, you get something raw and unpredictable that seems to almost randomly draw from other elements across the punk spectrum and beyond.

The Fly Downs are a band hailing from Ottawa, Canada. This trio just released their debut ep and I listened to it and liked it so here is the review.
The ep contains six songs of melodic punk with some hardcore and pop punk influences. Musically, this band is nothing new and revolutionary but they play with heart and balls and make great songs and that is just all that is important. The songs are structured with lots of melodic guitar hooks and fine melodies combined with great harmonized backing vocals. The main vocals remind me in some songs of Joey Cape of Lagwagon, especially in “SFANN”, which is one of my favorite tracks on this record. The lyrics are on more personal level about love, friendship, broken hearts and similar themes and they are good. In all, this is an excellent ep and it is on Bandcamp for free or for donation, so go ahead if you like such music, support the guys and drop them a line to tell them what do you think about their record.

Bio
In the fall of 2016, the trio which would become known as the Fly Downs started making punk rock music directly under the flight path of oncoming planes. They also all were caught with their flies down at the same time. The original trio started off with Jesse Brewer on vocals and Guitar, Shane Mahar on drums and backing vocals and Tyler Richardson on Bass. In October of 2017 they released their first album, the Pockets Out EP. In late 2017 Alex Hodges would take over on bass duties and bring the screaming side to the backing vocals. In early 2021 the trio would be welcomed into the Thousand Islands Records roster. Their debut Full Length album: At This Point In Time, would also be released later that year. In late 2021 the band would welcome Matt Sauve into the family and he would bring another guitar along with him. As of summer 2022, the quad has been working on new songs and plan to release another full length in the future.
