The Cold Atomic is a pseudonym for the solo work of Kyle Caldwell, previous frontman of the now-defunct rock band Animal Farm. With The Cold Atomic, Caldwell establishes his maturity as a songwriter and showcases his eclectic musical ideas, taking full control of the process by writing, recording, and producing solely by himself.
Currently The Cold Atomic is ambitiously recording and releasing five EPs consecutively, each covering a different sub-genre of rock—from stripped-down acoustic to glam-inspired funk. The third and latest, The Youth in Asia, is his most ambitious release to date, presented as both a 10-track concept album and companion historical novel set during the final months of World War II: the novel tells the story of a liberated Dutch soldier who must flee Europe after he discovers he’s been set up by his Allied handlers as a pawn in pre-Cold War strike against the Soviets, while the music provides the soundtrack to the narrative—a symbiosis of hard-riffing guitars, sweeping string arrangements, and melodious vocal hooks.
Caldwell currently resides in Hamilton, Ontario. He has shared the stage with Ill Scarlett, Rides Again, and Gloryhound, as well as performed with local bands Wentworth and Jade Greenaway, and has been featured in several publications including The Spec and VIEW magazine.
