We had the opportunity to interview Los Angeles-based group The Blood Moon Howlers! Their sound twinges on hard rock with bits of bluesy swamp rock infused, it's a fun sound you've gotta check out! They certainly know how to kick the door in! Check out what they had to say in our Artist Spotlight below!
1. How did you come to pursue music and how long have you been at it?
Matt (guitarist/vocals) - "My mom had an old guitar lying around that belonged to her mother, a Kay from 1950 something, so the guitar was on my mind! Then one day we were in a music shop and my grandmother (other side of the family) had a little bit of money saved up for my college fund anyways long story short and much to my grandmother’s dismay, I spent that money on a Fender Stratocaster and never looked back. I started playing around 9 or 10 years old, started writing music in my teens and started singing after I couldn’t find a singer for my band. That was about 7 years ago."
JuJu (bassist, vocals, keys) - "I have been singing since I was 2 years old, my grandma was a singing teacher and got me into it. I started playing piano at around 6 years old and writing music in my teens. Then picked up the bass when we started The Blood Moon Howlers because we needed a bassist!"
Brandon (drummer, percussionist) - "I grew up listening to a lot of Motown. As a kid I really wanted to play the bass, but we didn’t have much money growing up at that time, so I would make bass guitars out of boxes, strings and sticks and beg my uncle to show me how to play things on the bass when we would visit family. When I was 11 I saw the music video for the Gorillaz song Clint Eastwood and immediately knew that drums were all I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I talked my folks into getting me a couple drum lessons and I made a make-shift drum kit out of pots, pans and car accelerator pedal for a video game, and that obsession slowly turned into a career over the last 16 years."
Evan (sax, sitar, keys) - "I come from a whole family of musicians, Mom is a guitar and piano player and she had me taking music lessons before I could read a book. So I guess you could say most of my life has been dedicated to playing music."
2. Could you walk us through your process of writing music?
Matt and JuJu - "We are always writing lyrics and sharing ideas for pieces of songs. Matt usually starts on the guitar writing riffs or chord progressions and then we both write melodies and once we get the core of the song together we take it to Brandon for drum/arrangement ideas to get the whole song structure feeling good."
3. What artists have inspired you in your career?
Matt & JuJu - "So many it’s hard to know where to start! Here it is, you asked for it! Tom Waits, The Rolling Stones, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Freddy King, James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, John Fogerty, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Nathaniel Rateliff, Slim Harpo, The Beatles, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, Johnny Cash, Eddie Vedder, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, Stray Cats, Morphine, Robin Trower, Van Halen, Mississippi John Hurt, B.B. King, Albert King, Eric Burdon, Phillip Glass, Danny Elfman, Dirtwire, Moon Hooch, Grace Potter, Soundgarden, Traffic, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Radiohead, Elliott Smith to name a few…"
Brandon - "Pretty much everything and anything that makes a sound inspires me. Even things that don’t make sounds, the way they resonate frequencies without emitting anything audible to our ears is hugely inspiring. Every day after school I would come home and practice drums along with Red Hot Chili Peppers Records, Tool, Led Zeppelin, Gorillaz, a lot of Parliament-Funkadelic, I grew up listening to a lot of RnB and Jazz that hugely influenced me like Dave Brubeck. The Wu-Tang Clan, Dr. Dre… The list could go on and on but those were some that came to mind and were huge as a teenager."
Evan - "There are quite a lot of artists that have inspired me over the years. I listen to quite a lot of different genres and each corner of musical world has something that can be inspiring. The first group that really got me thinking outside the box, musically speaking, was Radiohead. They really have such a magical chemistry between them. I admire that. To name a few other artists and groups that have really influenced me, there is Depeche Mode, Tinariwen, Martin Stimming, Anoushka Shankar, and Dirtwire."
4. Do you have any favorite music gear (guitars, amps, effects pedals, keyboards, etc.) that you love to use? If so, what’s the story on them?
Matt - "I mainly play the Fender Telecaster and I got a Danelectro Baritone Guitar that I’m looking forward to putting on some new songs. My go to amp is the Fender Deluxe Reverb and I have a little Fender Champ for recording and practicing. My favorite pedal companies if I had to narrow it down would be Jim Dunlop (the “carbon copy” has been on my board for 10 years), Strymon (The “Deco” which I use for tape saturation in place of distortion lately) and Earthquaker Devices (the “afterneath and “spacial delivery” I use for just about every psychedelic trippy section in all of our songs!"
JuJu - "Right now I mostly use a Fender Mustang Bass and a Fender Coronado II Bass my favorite amp so far is the Ampeg Portaflex PF-50T with a Bag End cab. As far as pedals go, my favorite pedal is the tuner! And I recently got a DOD Meatbox to add in some super low sub synth sounds! I also have an Tyrolian upright acoustic piano that we use on recordings and also made an appearance on the back of our new LP coming out in April."
Brandon - "Oh man.. I have too many!! I have a snare drum that I bought the year after I got out of college that I’ve used on most recordings I’ve done, as well as toured all across America with me.. That snare holds a lot of meaning to me. I have a Ludwig drum set that I had built that my mom had left me some money to purchase before she passed away. The kit came in right before she passed, so I brought it over and she was able to hear me play it.. That holds a special place in my heart. I have some pieces of recording equipment in my studio that are my go-to’s and a lot of those pieces I but myself, so they have a little extra mojo when recording with them!"
Evan - "Oh man, The gear question. I have a pretty strong relationship with all of instruments and gear. My sitar was a gift from my grandparents after they visited India when I was 16. I had no idea that sitar would end up taking me for a ride I never thought was possible. Come to think of it, most of my instruments manifest for me in pretty mysterious ways. My tenor sax was given to me by and old man who had it laying around his garage for years. My Nord synth was a super heady Craigslist find and I really had no idea how phat of synth it was at the time. Little did I know I’d struck synth gold. I would really like to get more into pedals (to run my sax through) but bank account recently told me it’s not down."
5. Can you describe the vibe at your live shows? Also, what do you enjoy most about a venue when you do a show?
Matt - "Rowdy, fun and spontaneous!"
JuJu - "We love the unique experiences of each venue and vibing off the audience and each other on stage!"
Brandon - "I think the vibe is about connecting in a greater consciousness that happens when you let your mind shut off, let everything go and just surrender to the music. I think that's something we strive for each show, because its in that state that the magic happens. I hope that the people listening can pick up on the same thing and connect to the fact that we’re all just there to have a good time!"
Evan - "Our live shows are always a blast. Playing with Matt, Juju, and Brandon is a treat. They are all so tuned into each other and really good at energizing a room. We really just try to give everyone that “fuck yeah” feeling we all know and love. As far as venues go, the rowdier the better. We’ve played awesome venues to packed drunken rooms that go off the chain, and played to a dozen or so stragglers with the “hmmm….” look on their face."
6. What is one thing that you want the public to know about your music?
JuJu - "We all come from different backgrounds musically so even though we are rooted in all things Blues and Rock n Roll there are many layers and a lot of diversity to each tune."
Brandon - "Despite what everyone may think.. We didn’t start out as a Waka Flocka Flame/Flock of Seagulls cover band called Waka Flocka Seagulls."
7. Do you have any upcoming projects you would like fans to know about?
"We have a brand new single coming out at the end of this month and our new LP is coming out on April 26th! Also, one of the tracks on our new LP, “Sugar Babe” will be featured in the new short film titled, “Sugar Babe” coming out in the next few months so stay tuned!" - Alt Revue Magazine
The American neo-psych three piece The Blood Moon Howlers are serving up another taste of deliciousness from their musical café. The band is releasing a new unplugged single today consisting of an acoustic version of “Lady Daydream” which was originally found on their Wasteland EP. The B-side is an acoustic version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” The band had this to say about their new release:
“The reason we decided to do a digital single is, we wanted to give everyone a little something extra to listen to while we are currently writing our next EP. We are also big fans of bands doing multiple versions of their songs so that’s why we chose to do this version of “Lady Daydream.” As for “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” we thought our version of the song went well with “Lady Daydream” and who isn’t a Creedence fan?!” ~ The Blood Moon Howlers
As an added treat for fans, the band is also releasing a music video for each of the two songs and can be viewed with the links below: - I'm Music Magazine

What’s in a name? The music nerd in me loves to know about a band’s name. Sometimes there’s a story behind it and sometimes it’s just something that sounded cool. What’s the dealio with The Blood Moon Howlers Band?
The Blood Moon Howlers: The story behind our name is we were sitting around drinking with some friends one night and there was a blood moon out that night. Once we got to that certain point of whiskey risky we got on top of our roof and started howling at the moon. Our landlord wasn’t too psyched about that! For some reason we decided that name fit perfectly.
Your sound can’t truly be defined by a single genre or confined to a box (which I think is f’n amazing), but has that helped or hurt you in any way?
Both. Some people love it and some people get confused by it. We have had a lot of great feedback over all with people commenting on how the genre transitions are smooth and unique but every now and then we’ll have a person who thinks it sounds too much like two different songs. But that’s kind of the nature of our style and you can’t please everybody!
When was your Wasteland EP released and what’s the feedback been like on it so far? Btw, nice spin on the Johnny Cash classic!
We released Wasteland in January of this year, 2017. The feedback has been really good overall. We have gotten great comments about the dual lead vocals and how we blend our voices together. Thank you for commenting on the Johnny Cash tune, we had a lot of fun remaking it and putting our on spin on a song by an artist that has really inspired us.
If you can bring back any artist to perform with, who would it be and what song would you choose?
JuJu: I would absolutely bring back and love to perform with Freddie Mercury because his energy on stage is so powerful and charismatic!
Matt: Cliff Burton is coming to mind right now. It would be awesome to have that bell-bottom wearing Rickenbacker playin’ head bangin’ maniac on stage!
Final question: Toilet paper over or under?
Over of course! (haha)

The Blood Moon Howlers are an American neo-psych three-piece rock band formed in Los Angeles. Today, we're exclusively premiering their new single and music video for their song, "Motor Mouth Mission." Check it out below!
"Motor Mouth Mission is an original song that was leftover from the release of our EP, Wasteland. We just didn’t finish it in time and wanted to start fresh on our new album so we thought it would be cool to release it on it’s own."
We filmed the music video in Los Angeles, it’s compiled of “making of” studio footage and different gigs played in 2017. We like doing videos like this because we like to show the recording process and various locations used to make each recording. We feel it’s the most genuine way to show who we are as musicians and people. The main shots were filmed at Ultimate Studios Inc.
We had a great experience at that studio and want to work there much more in the future so we wanted it to be featured. We also show shots of our gig at Kulak’s Woodshed from September 24, 2017 where we played “Motor Mouth Mission” for the first time. We wanted to include footage from there because we filmed/recorded a live album which we are planning to release in January of 2018 - Kill The TV

The single leans heavily into the band’s hard rock, stoner rock, and punk influences, showcasing a darker and heavier version of their sound. The video premiered earlier this week on Kill The Music. “Motor Mouth Mission” comes as a one-off original single, following the release of the band’s EP titled Wasteland from earlier this year.
Jumping straight into heavy power-chords, tastefully distorted guitar, and a driving beat, “Motor Mouth Mission” demands your attention and builds into a powerful force. “It’s compiled of “making of” studio footage and different gigs played in 2017. We like doing videos like this because we like to show the recording process and various locations used to make each recording,” shared the band. “We feel it’s the most genuine way to show who we are as musicians and people. “Motor Mouth Mission” was released today in conjunction with a B-side cover of “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”, originally by KT Tunstall. “We thought a cover of “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” would be a fun B-side to the single because we’ve played that song for a long time acoustically and the idea came up to make it rockin’ after Matt got ahold of a Fender Bass Vi!” - I'm Music Magazine

If you like your music greasy then, folks, do we have a treat for you!
L.A.’s The Blood Moon Howlers’ newest single “Drunk N’ Cold,” slithers to life with grinding electric guitar and smokey saxophone (how many roots music dare to feature saxophone?!) Guitarist/vocalist Matt Wayne then growls, with harmony provided by bassist JuJu, this ode to swamp water and booze-drenched love would slot perfectly as a track from a particularly menacing David Lynch scene.
Of the song the band says “It’s the first song we wrote for the LP and it really set the whole writing process for the LP into motion. This is a song written about stories Matt has of hangin’ out with his friends partying outside in the cold when they were younger and there was no other place to go. Although people have interpreted it other ways which is fun to hear.”
“Drunk N’ Cold” is from the upcoming full-length album, “Mad Man’s Ruse, out April 26th. - Twang Nation

Bio
The Blood Moon Howlers roar into our lives with a gale force. Featuring dual male and female lead vocals with whisky drenched blues rock and flecks of smokey burlesque. Matt Wayne’s shimmering, but powerful, growling guitar riffs and blistering leads propel bassist JuJu’s haunting, ethereal vocals. The group established their command of bluesy, psychedelic rock on their 2017 EP Wasteland, which revealed their sure-handed songwriting prowess with songs such as “Lady Daydream” and “Long Way Down.”
The band’s powerful blues rock slams into our lives, grabbing us by our hearts and shaking us to our core, refusing to let go. JuJu’s soaring vocals transport us on songs such as “Sugar Babe,” where she demonstrates her mastery of phrasing and her canny ability to establish her voice as an instrument as compelling as Wayne’s guitar and Evan Hatfield’s sax. The band layers note upon note, building each song on a blues structure that provides a mesmerizing repetition while allowing the music to roam freely to follow its own innovations. The Blood Moon Howlers grew out of the collaboration between Wayne and JuJu. “We met when I was doing a Halloween show,” says JuJu. “My brother-in-law knew Matt, and he asked him to be the guitarist in the show. After that show, the band I was in at the time had a gig booked at the House of Blues in Hollywood and we needed a guitarist so we asked Matt. We started playing acoustic gigs, some covers as well as originals. We started writing jamming together, and then we created our band Orchid and Beryl. We started writing more and more. Our first EP was a mix of covers and originals. As we kept writing, the song styles started changing and morphed into The Blood Moon Howlers.” Drummer Brandon Cooke and saxophonist Hatfield round out the band, each contributing to the band’s signature sound. The Blood Moon Howlers’ distinctive sound grew out of the different musical backgrounds of the members. “We both had different musical backgrounds growing up,” says Matt. “When we started a band together we decided to work with each other’s differences and find a common ground.” Matt and JuJu found common ground in Tom Waits’ music: “Matt gave me a Tom Waits album, Nighthawks at the Diner” JuJu says, “and that was the first album we bonded over." Guitarist Wayne grew up playing in a lot of metal bands, and his influences run from the three Kings, Buddy Guy and Howlin’ Wolf to Led Zeppelin, Marc Ribot, and Tom Waits. “I recall when I was 14 I told a friend I’d love to play in a blues rock band,” he says. He focused on playing guitar but started singing because he couldn’t find the right lead singer for his bands. Though he says it was never a goal for him to sing, his raw, gruff vocals provide a dynamic counterpoint to JuJu’s translucent blues vocals. JuJu’s voice channels crystalline perfection, as well as out-of-this-world vocal flights. “I’ve been singing since I was two-years-old,” JuJu says; “my three sisters and I had a group, and my main thing was harmony.” While Wayne’s influences are rock and roll and blues, JuJu’s influences were soul and jazz: Billie Holiday, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Motown. The band named itself one night after a party at their place. Back in 2015, there was a Blood Moon, and we were all outside, drinking and hanging out. “We decided to go up to the roof to be closer to the moon, and after a bit we started howling at the moon,” they said. They decided that night to name themselves The Blood Moon Howlers. On their new album, Mad Man’s Ruse, the Blood Moon Howlers develop their distinctive sound, rocking off the rails with the propulsive opening track “Drunk ‘n’ Cold” while at the same time offering a slowed-down, more mellow take on the same song, the “Hangover Sessions” version, that showcases their throaty vocals and layered instrumentals. The band’s innovation lies in their love of exploring various takes on their songs. “One thing about our sound as a band,” Wayne and JuJu point out, “is we all come from different musical backgrounds so there are many influences and layers to each song and it keeps it kind of fun and spontaneous in the writing/recording/performing process because we never really know how a song is going to turn out in the end.” The Blood Moon Howlers’ innovative songwriting, their relentless drive to explore various musical styles and structures with different versions of their own songs, and their perfectly matching vocals and instrumentals deliver inventive sounds that both build on and depart from their traditional musical roots. They never fail to deliver a breath-taking variety of musical innovation and sheer fun.
