The Band Sheep believes two is better than one. The Philadelphia-based group has two frontmen, dressed appropriately in black and white sheep costumes. There are also two drummers, just not in costume. They were matching shirts, though. The only instrument that’s not double yet is the bass — but who knows what will happen next week. .
Formed in 2014, the Band Sheep plays regularly at clubs, street fairs and special events in and around Philadelphia. The band released their first single and video, Tax Return, in 2015. Now, they are recording their debut EP and planning regular regional tours and shows in the college market to support it.
The five-piece, occasionally augmented by other musicians, creates music in a quirky blend of genres. Songs start with singer-songwriter, and White Sheep, Rick Sabatini’s jazz- and folk-inspired guitar pieces. His idiosyncratic lyrics are honest and clearly personal, but quickly spin out to encompass universal themes and ideas.
From there, it gets put through a blender of hip-hop beats, classic rock muscle, carefully-placed melodies and all-out weirdness: Anything from unexpected harmonies and rhythmic ideas to shouts, animal sounds and electronic noises. The result is music that’s familiar, but also a little weird and always earnest.
On record, and especially on stage, the band is always passionate and reliably unpredictable. Live shows feature energetic performances of tightly-rehearsed songs alongside freestyle raps, expert-level jam band flights of fancy. Off-stage, there’s plenty of dancing, courtesy of the Party Animals. They’re the band’s dedicated fans who also show up in their own costumes.
It’s not long, however, before everyone in the crowd is a Party Animal: dancing, singing and enjoying the moment with everyone else. They may not be costume, but that’s fine. What matters for The Band Sheep is that everyone is there, together.Band Members
