The Bam Jand
Chicago, Illinois, United States | Established. Jan 01, 2016
Bio
The Bam Jand was formed in early 2016 by Chicago area musicians for the purpose of exploring all the possibilities offered through spontaneous musical composition. The idea being that the patterns, rhythms, and melodies that we associate with music are capable of emerging on their own, unforced, unwritten and unplanned, given the right setting; among musicians who have faith in the process of paying close attention to each other, responding, and creating while fully immersed in the present moment. Music is the language used for the stream of consciousness the band participates in.
The band has seen some changes to its roster, for a period having had six members. At the core, guitarist Andy Johnson and bassist Neil Hansen have been the only constant members from the beginning. The current line-up is a nimble and dynamic trio, with returning original drummer, Bill Peterson, who also brings a wide array of electronics to the band’s sound.
Drawing inspiration from many diverse influences, including the early years of The Grateful Dead, known for their extended improvisations, as well as CAN, Soft Machine, Hawkwind and other experimental music pioneers, the band seeks to create a very organic form of music, or rather, an environment in which the music can create itself in the moment. Sharing the sense of naked vulnerability, exposing themselves and their audience to the risks of open musical communication, is a sacred undertaking for the band. A sense of adventure, a willingness to take risks and explore the unknown in hopes of sharing fantastic new discoveries with the audience in real time is what propels the band to pursue its vision.
