For his audience, Teo played four un-published songs, that cannot be heard anywhere else but in concert. “City Lights” opened the night to set up the mood. Later on, “Remembering”: a composition commissioned by McMichael’s Gallery on their 50th anniversary back in 2016. “Serenade” was a Canadian premiere tonight, and you must see the short video of Teo playing it at his studio for…his cat Bubu, laying on top of the piano with feline grace and sophistication (it’s on Teo’s Facebook, posted Oct 18, 2018). Pianistul Teo Milea, 36 de ani, rezident de mai bine de doi ani la Toronto, în Canada, ne-a vorbit despre ascensiunea sa artistică, despre ce înseamnă muzica pentru el, despre proiectele sale artistice, dar mai ales despre legătura indestructibilă pe care o are cu România. ”În România sunt mereu creativ! De câte ori revin în țară pentru concerte sau doar pentru a-mi vizita părinții și prietenii apropiați, aștern pe portative încă o idee. Care este povestea lui Teo Milea?

Povestea mea începe în primăvara anului 1982. Chișineu-Criș a fost locul în care am spus, într-o limbă doar de mine știută, “Bună Dimineața!” lumii în care tocmai intrasem. Acolo mi-am petrecut primele zile din viață și, fiind atît de mic, nu am amintiri; cu siguranță mama are multe amintiri plăcute din acele zile.

Perioada copilăriei și a adolescenței am petrecut-o în Arad, unde am urmat timp de 12 ani cursurile liceului de arte “Sabin Drăgoi”. Anii tinereții i-am trăit în Timișoara, unde am urmat cursurile facultății de muzică, după care am decis să rămân în orașul de pe Bega. Au fost cei mai frumoși 15 ani petrecuți într-un oraș pe care, oriunde aș locui în lumea aceasta, tot am să-l numesc “acasă”.

În cursul, spun eu, natural al vieții, a apărut oportunitatea de a schimba continentul, iar astăzi, de mai bine de 2 ani și jumătate, sunt de găsit în cea mai mare parte a timpului în Toronto, Canada.

Vorbiți-ne despre dumneavoastră, despre ce înseamnă muzica pentru dumneavoatră și care a fost drumul parcurs până astăzi. Vorbiți-ne despre proiectele viitoare și despre legătura cu țara, departe de casă.

La început muzica a fost un pretext pentru a-mi păstra locul în Liceul de Arte, pentru că inițial doream să urmez cursurile de sculptură ale acestui liceu. Spun pretext pentru că sculptura se începea doar din ciclul gimnazial. Cu siguranță vă întrebați cu toții: de ce sculptură? E foarte simplu: tata este sculptor și talentat fiind, spunea tata, doream să continui tradiția familială. Așa am ales ca pentru ciclul primar să urmez cursurile de pian, cu gîndul ca din clasa a V–a să-mi urmez destinul. Am ajuns să mă îndrăgostesc de pian din prima clipă însă, iar în clasa a II–a destinul meu suferea modificări fundamentale.

Anii au trecut, cam 24 la număr, timp în care am învățat tainele pianului și ale muzicii în cele mai mici detalii de la părinții mei muzicali – profesorii și mentorii mei. M-am format ca pianist de muzică clasică și am concertat în peste 400 de recitaluri și concerte prin mai toată Europa, cu muzica lui Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Bartok …

De mic am fost pasionat de improvizație, “jucându-mă” cu temele pieselor pe care le lucram și în variantă proprie și personală. Desigur, asta se întâmpla doar acasă, pe scenă interpretam lucrările în forma lor originală.

După ce am întâlnit fata care mai apoi mi-a devenit partener de viață cu acte în regulă, la imboldurile și încurajările ei, am început să transform improvizațiile mele în piese de sine stătătoare și astfel, în anul 2012, apărea primul meu disc de autor intitulat On White … and Black Keys (Pe clape albe…si negre).

Deși mai toți îmi spuneau că nimeni nu are nevoie de un recital de pian cu muzică nouă, eu, născut fiind sub zodia taurului – deci încăpățânat din fire, le-am spus tuturor că acesta este noul meu drum și am să reușesc.

Ca semn al reușitei, în toamna lui 2015, îmi lansam cel de-al doilea disc dedicat pianului, intitulat Open Minds (Minți deschise). Era mesajul meu de mulțumire adresat tuturor prietenilor muzicii mele, care m-au susținut de la primul concert și care mi-au îndrăgit muzica din prima clipă. Azi spun că este confirmarea reușitei mele, pentru că cele două discuri au ajuns în casele a mii de oameni, au inspirat povești de dragoste, au creat legături și s-au auzit Live pe scene din Europa și America de Nord în peste 150 de concerte.

Departe de casă pentru mine înseamnă cam 15 ore de zbor – din casa din Toronto până în casa părinților mei din Arad. Așadar nu aș putea spune că este foarte departe. Astăzi poți să cânți în aceeași zi pe două continente fără să întâmpini nicio problemă.

Sunt invitat să concertez în România cel puțin de două ori pe an, iar asta mă face să mă simt ca și cum nu am plecat niciodată de acolo. Acasă am prietenii din tinerețe, parteneri de scenă alături de care am proiecte în derulare și alături de care am o mare satisfacție să cânt.

Proiectul despre care aleg să vă vorbesc astăzi este cel de-al treilea material dedicat pianului, care se va numi I am Human (Sunt om), și pe care în toamna lui 2019 îl voi face public într-o serie de concerte, urmând ca ulterior să apară și în format audio. Despre celelalte proiecte la care lucrez în paralel, cu tobe sau cu flaut, sau formulele de trio, am să vă povestesc în momentul în care se apropie de finalizare.

Ce reprezintă pentru dumneavoastră România? Ce ați schimba? Și cum se vede aceasta dincolo de hotare?

Întotdeauna România va fi pentru mine “acasă”. Chiar dacă sunt la mii de km distanță, alături de amintiri din anii tinereții, am lăsat o parte din sufletul meu acolo pe tărâmul natal, iar când pășesc prin locurile acelea mă încarc și redevin un întreg.

Cu siguranță sunt prea mic eu pentru a putea schimba ceva, dar mi s-a confirmat că preț de mai bine de o oră pot să “opresc timpul în loc” prin muzica pe care o dăruiesc din tot sufletul celor care decid să ne întâlnim în “sufrageria muzicală”, cum îmi place să numesc eu sălile de concert. În sufragerie îți inviți doar prietenii, iar pentru mine fiecare om care îmi ascultă muzica îmi devine instant prieten.

Consider că lucrurile trebuie să își urmeze cursul firesc și natural, iar dacă eu pot ajuta la o schimbare în bine, sunt pregătit și dornic să îmi aduc aportul.

Prin multele țări prin care am avut bucuria să concertez și să le vizitez am găsit părți bune și părți mai puțin bune. Nu cred că există un loc ideal pe mapamond. Sunt sigur că și la Monte Carlo găsești ceva care nu este întocmai cum ar trebui. Cred însă că, în mare parte, depinde de noi cum ne integrăm în locul în care suntem și cum îl prezentăm. Ca urmare eu, pentru că aleg să apreciez întotdeauna doar partea plină a paharului, prefer să observ părțile pozitive din Romănia și vorbesc despre ele celor care mă întreabă de unde vin. Nu cred că face cinste unui om să vorbească de rău locul în care s-a născut. In opinia mea, e ca și cum aș vorbi urât despre mama, ceea ce nu se poate. E vorba de respect!



În ce context v-ați întoarce în România?

Vreți să vă spun un secret? În România sunt mereu creativ! De câte ori revin în țară pentru concerte sau doar pentru a-mi vizita părinții și prietenii apropiați, aștern pe portative încă o idee. Și pentru că îmi doresc să fiu creativ mereu, să-mi pot pune pe portativ poveștile și să pot transmite cât mai sincer mesajul meu muzical, România va rămâne mereu destinația preferată.

Când voi simți că pot încheia capitolul “Canada”, voi avea în vedere cu siguranță și o eventuală întoarcere în țară. Decizia ar fi mult mai ușoară și, poate, ar veni mai repede dacă aș vedea mai multă susținere culturală acasă, mai multă libertate în exprimarea talentelor artistice…

Privesc cu optimism spre ziua de mâine și vă promit că fac tot ce îmi stă în putință pentru a o face mai bună, dar va cer și vouă sprijinul, pentru că singur nu am cum sa reușesc. Știti prea bine că nu se face primăvară cu o floare, însă cu un buchet de flori soarele strălucește mai zâmbitor și mai călduros în diminețile de aprilie.

Ce doriți să transmiteți românilor din țară și din diasporă?

Atât celor pe care-i iubesc de acasă, cât și celor dragi din diasporă, le spun că le sunt alături în proiectele lor culturale și le doresc să-și ducă la îndeplinire rolul și misiunea pe care și-au asumat-o. M-aș bucura ca fiecare român să poată vedea partea plină a paharului, cea a realizărilor, nu cea a neajunsurilor. Cu siguranță acest fel de a vedea lucrurile ne va aduce mai multă bucurie, siguranță, izbândă și liniște sufletească.

First off, care to tell the readers a bit about yourself?

My name is Teo Milea, lover of good music and other beautiful things; pianist, composer and educator as well.

I started to play the piano when I was 6 years old. At first it was only classical music. I attended various national and international piano competitions across Romania and beyond: Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary. In 2010 I had the chance of collaborating with the Opera from Vienna in “The Magic Flute” Opera by W.A. Mozart. I spent a good amount of time in Switzerland and Germany, where I performed in a duo-formula piano – pan flute.

Then an exploration of new musical styles began for me – rock, pop, soul, nu jazz, funk, ambient. I performed in various bands that I had set up together with other musicians. Those were beautiful projects, but the outstanding challenge was to create my own style.

In July 2012 I released my first piano solo album: ‘On white…and black keys’. This album showed me to the public through the seven songs as a pianist and a composer belonging to two worlds: the world of classic and the new world, of the 21st century. All my work is based on interpersonal relations, states and needs of modern society, passion and desire to conquer new soul territories, not yet explored.

Important milestones in my career as a classical crossover musician were my performances at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium (November 2012) and at the International Ballet Gala in Dortmund, Germany – where the first soloist of the Opera choreographed and danced together with her stage partner, on my ‘Agony and Ecstasy’. (October 2013). On both occasion I was honored to be the first pianist ever invited to perform there.

In October 2015, I released my second solo piano record: ‘Open Minds’. With this album, my piano music enters a new dimension of sensitivity and perception. It is my thank you message addressed to all my fans for all the support and trust they have given me these years and also, it is a call for tolerance, joy and friendship. 2015 was also the year I wrote five songs for piano & flute.

What would there be more to say about me? When I don`t play the piano and when I`m not composing, I cook – and my friends say I do it well – and I ride my bicycle. But even then I still can compose.

How does it feel to be in the top 4 of such a prestigious competition, narrowed down from over 2000 entrants?

This is an amazing moment for me! I feel great and also so grateful for all the support of my fans. They are my friends and I love them.

These last few weeks, since entering the contest, have been such an exciting journey for me – realizing that my fans are there for me and support me every step of the way. I have been receiving messages of support from people all around the world, even from places I haven`t even got the chance to perform yet.

Being in the Top 4 made me realize even more that my music has no borders, it is an international language. Even though it has no lyrics, I believe my message is clear and reaches people, and that is all I wish for. I feel blessed for being able to do that every day.

What advice would you give future entrants to the Searchlight competition?

I would totally advise on getting into this competition. You can learn so much about yourself, about the music you make, about your fans. And what is an artist without the support of his fans, right?

And I would say: Promote! Promote! Promote! Nowadays we have so many ways to get the music to the public, so many social media platforms, the personal website etc. People need to find out about what you do, they need to discover your music and they may as well fall in love with it and support it.

And another thing I would say to future entrants is to be themselves, and not someone they are not, only for the public eye. If your music is sincere, people with resonate with it and they will follow you.

What has been the highlight of being a part of Searchlight?

I have never been part of a competition like this before so it has been a totally new experience for me. Being new here in Canada, it is my wish that my music gets to more and more Canadians and I found Searchlight as being great in reaching this goal.

The highlight of being part of Searchlight has been the opportunity to introduce my music to my new home country. Reaching the Top 4 is offering me this chance, by performing on CBC TV and being watched and listened by millions of viewers. This is an important moment and a big jump in my career. Through Searchlight I am actually living the Canadian dream.

What’s up next for you?

I am happy to say this is a busy time for me. This month I`m starting my first collaboration for a film I was invited to do the soundtrack for. I am really excited about this and I can`t wait to see the final result.

On June 4, I will be performing at the Moonlight Gala – the 50th Anniversary of the McMichael`s Art Gallery in Vaughn, ON, where I have been invited to compose a special piano piece. First audition of ‘Remembering’ will mark an important milestone in my Canadian journey, as it is the first song I write since I have moved here in Toronto.

This June I also get the chance to travel back to my native country, Romania, where I have scheduled three concerts. I miss my Romanian fans and I know for sure they can`t wait to see me play my piano for them again. My last concert there was seven months ago, just before moving to Canada.

Toronto is also on my mind and I`m working on scheduling a next concert here for this fall. But before that, I get the chance to visit and perform for the first time in Calgary this October.
