"Tinashe Ft. Taya Marquis | OVO Boi-1da.net"

(semi)newcomer Taya Marquis took to the stage to start off the night. With her dancers in tow, she performed singles from her EP, ‘Woman’. While the crowd originally thought she was Tinashe, baring a strikingly similar stage set and presence, Taya found her place singing tracks like “Love Again” and “Obsession” with ease. - Boi1Da.net [Mega Producer's online music Blog]

"CONCERT REVIEW – Tinashe and Taya Marquis at Tattoo Queen West"

Before the main event, Canadian singer Taya Marquis hit the stage to showcase her talents to the eager fans. To lay down some background, the young singer grew up in Mississauga and can be dubbed as a “hidden gem.” She moved down to L.A. to pursue her dreams in music and worked with platinum selling artists like Ke$ha ["A La Discotheque"] and songwriters like Robert Allen [Rihanna‘s “Disturbia” and Chris Brown‘s “Forever”]. She even wrote the theme song for Sony’s video game “The Agency”, which earned her a nomination for Best Original Song in Video Game back in 09. Since then she has returned back to the city of Toronto to work on her herself and her brand as an artist with assistance from the Metal Works Institute.

To start things off, Taya performed a solo cut, which immediately caught the crowd’s attention. It’s a rare to see artists who could capture the crowd in an instant. Her empowering yet flavorful vocals and melody of the song was quite the sight to see. Moving to her next song, she placed a sturdy chair on the stage and made a move to pull a man out of the crowd, which had everyone’s eyebrows raised in anticipation. She performed her seductive single called, “Obsession“, which showcased her dance moves with the young gentlemen, who turned out to be one of her dancers. Touché, Taya Marquis! She then rallied the rest of dancers for her bouncy single, “Fiesta“, which earned her cheers from the crowd. From what I’ve gathered, she’s been making all the right moves. She’s talented, there’s no doubt about that. If she keeps her consistency and appearances going, I have no doubts, she will definitely be the talk of the town. Recently, Taya has been gearing up for her own EP. To bring in the buzz, she decided to release the official visuals to “Obsession”, which was directed by 8 Figure Productions. Her single can be purchased via iTunes. - Best Fan Music Blog

"Taya Marquis Rocks out with Kijiji"

All you need is a little creativity when it comes to pursuing a career as an artist.

Just ask Taya Marquis, who has been using Kijiji to find others like her who are just as ambitious and driven to succeed as she is.

Taya shared her story with us a few months ago when by chance; she met us at an event she happened to be performing at. As we got talking she shared how Kijiji has been a great crowd sourcing platform for her to find people to jam with, instruments, talent and musical equipment.

Since then, she’s created an awesome cover of Fall Out Boy’s My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light’Em Up). Collaborating with other musicians, Nimbus Art Films and Howl Studio, the video slows the original down a bit, showing off Taya’s style and not to mention some swag from Kijiji!

“My music is more pop, but I love to take music of all genres and put my own spin on it,” she said.

Taya added the first time she heard the song, she knew it would work for her voice.

“I think Fall Out Boy makes some great music, and after a 10 year hiatus I had to celebrate them coming back,”

But Taya hasn’t always been at the front and centre stage, ready to rock the mic. For years, she was behind the scenes, crafting her talent as a songwriter. After graduating from performing arts school Cawthra Park Secondary School in her hometown of Mississauga, she moved to California to work with Bird Call Productions as their main songwriter. She helped co-write A La Discotheque with pop sensation Ke$ha and also returned to school at the Metalworks Institute of Sound and Music Production to graduate from the entertainment business management program where she received the Songwriter of the Year award.

Now, Taya finds herself following her passion for writing, but is doing it for herself this time around.

She’s currently working on her own EP and getting her name out on the music scene by collaborating with other artists and performing at the 2010 and 2011 Canada’s Walk of Fame Emerging Artist Showcase, Honey Jam 2012 and more recently at Wekfest 2013 alongside Snoop Dogg, Finger 11 and Justin Nozuka.

Kijiji is just one of the ingredients to her recipe for success, helping her along in her career as a singer/songwriter.

Being a new artist, she said, it’s a great source in helping her find people she can collaborate with, whether it’s other musicians or videographers to help her film her videos on YouTube.

“I use Kijiji for almost everything music related. I’ve found tons of musicians that have played on my songs and performances. It has also been the most helpful for finding videographers and photographers that have filmed a few of my videos on Youtube, and have conducted a couple of my photoshoots,” she said.

“You’d think people posting things would be amateur and low quality, but I’ve found people just as good, if not better than professionals you’d find at major companies,” she said. “I love working with people I find on Kijiji because I feel like we’re both starting out and we’re in the same boat.” - Kijiji

"Canada's Walk of Fame"

Canada’s Walk of Fame has named Calum Graham of High River, Alberta, the winner of its Song For Canada competition.

The 19-year-old beat out over 600 hopefuls to secure a $25,000 prize, as well as $10,000 worth of recording time at Metalworks Studios where he’s already started collaborating with acclaimed Canadian musical artists Chantal Kreviazuk, Stephan Moccio and Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace).

The nationwide competition called for lyrical prose that captured the Canadian spirit and Graham responded with a vision of an inclusive and diverse nation which won the judges’ hearts.

Graham’s song pays tribute to everyone from the “the busker who plays his heart out on the corner of the street” to “the old, retired veteran who pauses for a moment of silence.” His depiction of Canada includes a throat singer in Nunavut, a fisherman in the Maritimes, a trucker on the highway and a child who speaks out against racism and violence.

Graham began playing guitar when he was just 13-years-old and is no stranger to recognition. He won the Canadian Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in 2010, as well as the Calgary Stampede Talent Search and the Canadian Youth Talent competition, both in 2009.

Composer Stephan Moccio, who has written songs for stars like Céline Dion and Josh Groban, will incorporate at least one line from Graham’s submission into an original score.

“His poem celebrates the cultural mosaic that is Canada,” Moccio said in a statement. “He has captured the diversity of this country — something that we as a nation are renowned for and proud of.”

Graham was not the only young talent at the top of the songwriting competition. The runner-up, Catherine Brenan of Oakville, Ontario, is only 10-years-old. She and the third place winner, Vince Dixon of Sydney, Nova Scotia, will be awarded $2,500 and $1,000 respectively.

Graham’s song is available on iTunes and he will be performing it alongside Chantal Kreviazuk, Stephan Moccio and Raine Maida at The Canada’s Walk of Fame Awards Show, Sunday, October 23rd at 8:00pm on Global.

Our very own Taya Marquis performed at the 2011 Canada’s Walk of Fame Festival. Her backing band and team had many familiar faces including MWI grads Mikal Gonzales (Manager), Terence Lam (Keyboards) and Jules Lynch (Bass) as well as current students Sunny Chohan (Percussion), Jessy Aaron (Guitar) and Alexandra Soumalias (Musical Director). “Metalworks is a big part of me,” Marquis shared in a phone interview. “I’ll always feel a close connection to the school. Everything I learnt in the Entertainment Business Management program has helped me connect and grow my network in the music business which has led me to opportunities like this one”. - Metalworks Institute
