Bio
Five talented musicians, Steve Kauffman (acoustic guitar & vocal), Ed Alleva (electric guitar & vocals), Ken Shuck (bass & vocals), Dave Donohue (drums), and Bob Marble (keys). Thats it just five talented musicians. But between them they have well over 100 years of playing experience, with (and for) some of the most prestigious artists, acts and venues in the region. And the reasons are clear a jazzy-rockin-folkie blend of rich three-part vocals, inventive songwriting, fun cover tunes, and intricate guitar work, all sitting on top of a beat, a groove, a stonegroove that makes you want to move! As many have said, Stove cooks!
The band, more of a group of great friends really, has been building to this moment for years. Steve & Ed were two of the founding members of the highly esteemed Giant Panda Gypsy Blues Band (yes-the name came from Tom Robbins), a band that received considerable attention in the early 1990s at venues such as Phillys Chestnut & Ardmore Cabarets, New Yorks Lions Den, Washington DCs Bayou, and by opening for acts such as Joan Osborne, J. Giels, Big Daddy Kinsey & the Kinsey Report, and the Aquarium Rescue Unit (with members Jimmy Herring & Oteil Burbridge who now play with the Allman Brothers & the Dead). Later, in the mid-late 90s, Steve played with Flying Colors, a central PA band that often opened for groups like Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, & Merle Saunders. During this same period, Ed, a true multi-instrumentalist musician, joined with his wife Jeanne (now a respected paint artist in the area) and formed a duo called VisionWest that played in many of the most respected folk & songwriting venues in the region.
Back together now, Steve & Ed are joined by three true musicians. Ken the rock-steady, yet melodic bassist, has played with a number of acts over the years at prestigious venues such as the Philadelphia Folk Festival. He is also our resident rock historian (though not only rock music, but also fossils of the pre-Cambrian type!!). The powerful drumming comes from rhythm master Dave (or Double D to the band), fresh from the Ohio music scene and jamband festivals all thru the Midwest. And the newest member is Bob Marble, a technology genius whose keyboard work can only be called amazing, soulful, free, and unique.
Now, with on-your feet dancing rhythms, the band has wowed audiences at Baltimores famed 8x10 Club and festivals & clubs throughout the region.
Listen, dance, and enjoy, and you too will understand why one listener wrote on Philzone.org Stove is friggin awesome! Yes Stove cooks, indeed!!
The Stove Sound
Most bands that play original music hate it when someone asks what kind of music do you play? In response, you often will get answers like Hmm, well, its kind of like, umm, oh, you know
With Stove, the answer is Well, its like.hmm, sort of a jazzy-rockin-folkie jammy thing. But short of that, there are influenceslots of influences. These run the whole distance from the singer-songwriter (Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Johnny Cash, James Taylor, David Crosby & CSN) to the grooves of R&B (Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & Parliament) to the world of jazz (Pat Metheny & Miles Davis) to the rock masters (Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Beatles, the Everly Brothers) and finally to the jam band work of the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead, & Phish. That is a start.
But then, a better way to answer is to give Stove a listen
