Who: Eli & the Straw Man, Marlon Chaplin, Stereo Sunrise & Barbarosa
When: January 12, 2017
Where: Toronto, ON
Venue: The Horseshoe Tavern
Eli & the Straw Man took over the legendary Horseshoe Tavern last week to warm our hearts with a night full of good tunes, rich harmonies, and rootsy folk jams. Joining them were the sunny alt-folk sounds of Barbarosa, soulful bluesy tunes courtesy of Marlon Chaplin and the infectious 90’s alt-rock jams of Stereo Sunrise. Canadian Beats has all the photos from the show! - Cassandra Popescu
The nominees are in, the venue is booked, and the stage is set for the sixth annual Niagara Music Awards.
The celebration of Niagara’s music scene is returning to the 1,000-seat Niagara Centre for the Arts on Epworth Circle in Niagara Falls Aug. 6, the fourth time it has hosted the event.
“I get e-mails like crazy saying ‘I hope you have it again at the Niagara Centre for the Arts’,” says NMA director Nathan Chamberland, who took over the show from founders Morgan Whalen and Jack Mitchell last year. “We looked at a bunch of different venues, but that seems to be the one everybody really likes.”
Nominees were announced July 2 during an NMA event at Boston Pizza in Welland. Aaron Berger, Crutch, The Black Flies, A Book of Wanderers, Thunderclap and Paul Federici all tied for the most nominations with four apiece. Rapper The KaC Himself nabbed three nominations.
Chamberland was thrilled to see several new Niagara artists get nods this year.
“That’s really what I’m most excited about,” he says. “Finally, we’re starting to get some new blood coming in, and some of these guys and girls are fantastic.”
Awards will be presented in 22 categories, with online voting to determine Best Bar Band and People’s Choice. Votes can be made at www.niagaramusicawards.ca
There were not enough submissions for the Producer, Progressive Rock Group and Punk Group categories this year.
The website will soon offer music from each of the nominees, as well as the option to buy and sell music.
While Chamberland says it’s “never smooth” running a show this big, he has a better grasp on it his second year.
“It takes a team to do it,” he says. “I know it better now, I know my mistakes from before. That’s the key.”

Bio
Stereo Sunrise is an established award-winning Canadian four-piece band based in Niagara Falls. Descending from 90's alt-rock influences including Janes Addiction and Blind Melon, the members are all trying to capture a lost feeling within the current climate of rock music. The title track to their 2016 release "Wait For It" presents a thoughtful insight that compares the ups and downs of life to the tide of expectation states Stereo Sunrise's Holland-born vocalist Justin Koetsier. After the success of "Wait For It" which was recorded with Juno award winning producer Siegfried Meier along with Jordan Rutledge, the band felt inspired and begin writing their third EP. After a string of shows and college radio tours, the band replaced their drummer and welcomed Mark Hoerdt from indie punk band Knife The Wolf. "Instantly I could feel a difference in style that Mark brought to the table" states bass player Arih Struger-Kalkman. "We all felt it was time to head back to the studio.”
After meeting with a long list of producers, the band decided to go with Canadian record producer/songwriter Andre Kaden Black and mix engineer Tal "Dr. V" Vaisman. Guitarist Piero Montemurro remembers their first day tracking at Jukasa Studios, “... the tones we were getting from the live room were incredible, even just the overall vibe, Andre, and Tal really helped us capture the sound we were hoping for.
Stereo Sunrise's new single "Said The Villain" is set to drop spring 2018
