Seeking what band members describe as a "new vibe" with a low-key Bread-meets-Pink Floyd flavor, Space Station Lounge has put out a New EP.
TuRtle and Antonio longtime musicians and songwriters who live in the beautiful Flint Hills of Kansas , said their 20-minute extended-play CD "Across the Astral Plane" is available for purchase at area stores as well as Select City's across the country. They said they are excited about the release, which was two years in the making.
"I've never been as happy about a release," TuRtle said. "This conveys the vibe that we both wanted."
TuRtle and Antonio said the flow of the six songs on the CD ranges from singer-songwriter mode to arresting instrumentals.
The CD isn't designed to be cookie-cutter, conveyor-belt music or "the flavor of the moment,"TuRtle said, but neither is it stuck in the past. Their goal, he said, was to offer a deliberately atypical, yet honest, combination of song writing with a touch of the experimental.
"We want the focus to be on the music," he said. "We're focusing on a Organic vibe, offering a little good karma."
Space Station Lounge was formed in 2010. As Space Station Lounge, they have played in Topeka, Lawrence, Kansas City, Colombia, Mo., Atlanta, Ga, Boulder, Co, Los Angeles, Ca. and Bangor, Maine.
They said a team approach, bouncing ideas off each other and playing to their strengths were their primary characteristics.
"After being together for a while, it seemed that TuRtle and I's music and the direction that we were going seemed to work pretty well together," Antonio added . "We write well together."
The CD displays Interesting artwork fro Regional artist David Lee Anderson. Antonio and TuRtle said that among their various interests and influences, are space exploration and also the environment.
These themes are particularly explored in the songs "Venus" and "Freaks of Nature."
"We have to take care of what we've got here on Earth," TuRtle.

Space Station Lounge plays short, catchy folk tunes, but singer and multi-instrumentalist Turtle adds cosmic touches befitting the group's name, such as sci-fi soundtrack keyboards and the odd Stephen Hawking sample. Turtle (along with bandmate Tony D) mostly works alone, as isolated as Major Tom, except during "Moonbird," on which he duets with Olgostin from Italian one-woman band September 29th. Her delicate voice subtly complements his watery, distorted delivery over smooth-jazz electric guitars (in that good, George Benson way). The instrumental title track, with its acoustic fingerpicking, provides the purest folk experience, and "Disappear," with its psychedelic shivers and Turtle's airy intonation of its title, floats gently into atmospheric territory. Space Station Lounge's futuristic revisions to the folk template don't come at the expense of gentle melodies: The sounds of progress aren't usually this relaxing. - The Pitch - Kansas City - by Andrew Miller
