It’s the best time of the year, and the RVA music scene really knows how to celebrate! On December 22nd, Capital Ale House hosted South Hill Banks’ 2nd Annual Holiday Jamboree Show.
The band encouraged festive attire for the sold out event, and even wore their favorite Christmas morning pajamas on stage. Frontman Lance “Lanny” Thames channeled his inner Jon Fishman, drummer for Phish, when he bounced around the room wearing his holiday Miu Miu. The crowd didn’t miss a beat as they rocked holiday onesies, flannel nighties, and tacky sweaters galore. Even Santa enjoyed the festivities, making for the perfect photo opt for show goers.
If you haven’t had a chance to check out South Hill Banks, their sound is the perfect cocktail of bluegrass with a twist of psychedelic rock and a heavy splash of jam. The Banks boys played 2 sets and showcased their unique take on traditional American bluegrass. Opening with “Restless Wind” SHB warmed up the crowd to a night of foot stomping good old fashioned fun. They continued with a medley of originals, Christmas favorites, and Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”.
The evening also included performances from special guests; Josh Crowley (Sax), Bailey Horsley (harmonica), Travis Rinehart (banjo), and Sid Kingsley (keys), all sitting in with the band in rotating sets – jamming the night away. As the evening came to a close, South Hill Banks invited all of the stellar guest performers to join on stage to sing a favorite holiday tune, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, ending the festivities with a stage packed full of local talent. Be sure to catch them the 2nd Friday of every month at The Camel and take home a copy of their album Riverside Dr. - Dust Up Mag
