We are exhausted, but it's the good kind of exhaustion — the kind that comes from singing along with live bands, dancing and laughing hard with friends. And, if your name is Felix Contreras, it's the kind of exhaustion that comes from getting on stage and killing it on the congas along with Sergio Mendoza Y La Orkesta.
It all happened on the Alt.Latino/KUTX stage at the Pachanga Music Festival in Austin, Texas, just last weekend. In addition to presenting artists we love, one of the festival's highlights was meeting people who listen to out show. Every time I get to hang out with listeners, I'm reminded of how lucky we are to interact with such a fun-loving, musically knowledgeable, passionate tribe.
If you were at the festival, let us know your favorite memory. And if you couldn't make it to Austin this year, don't worry: We recorded some of the music for this week's show, and are sharing it with you right here. Enjoy! - NPR Music alt.latino
Son de Rey, “Ojos Azules.” Son de Rey’s upbeat electro-pop and Latin rhythm blends get the hips shaking and the pachanga started. Wanna hear a cumbia Spanglish version of Wham’s “Careless Whisper?” Who doesn’t? Son de Rey’s playful and masterfully executed version will put a smile on any ’80s music fan’s face. Performing May 16 at Pachanga Latino Music Festival at Fiesta Gardens. - Austin 360

While often labeled as a “Tejano” band, Son De Rey mixes elements of salsa and R&B making them more of a fusion or “new Tejano” band. Either way, you will enjoy the show. Today the Dia De Los Muertos Festival will take place at Oswaldo A. B. Cantu Pan American Recreation Center. After an extraordinarily successful first year, the all-day event benefiting Easter Seals of Central Texas, is back for another round of family-friendly cultural activities and entertainment at the popular eastside community center best known for its Hillside Summer Concert series.
The musical lineup includes a wide variety of latino artists from various backgrounds and traditions on two different stages. Fans can look forward to mariachi, ballet folklorico, cumbias, Tejano (courtesy of Grammy Award winners A.B. Quintanilla & the Kumbia Kingz All-Starz) and more to celebrate the traditional Dia De Los Muertos holiday and raise funds and awareness for individuals with disabilities and special needs.
The schedule is subject to change, but here’s the lineup:
Hillside Stage
Grupo de Danza Mexica-chichimeca de Austin Aztec Dancers (Opening Ceremony) – 1:20-1:40 p.m.

Long story short: A great event filled with family fun, pageantry, culture, tradition, and of course, music. Lots of cumbia this year not only from ABQ and crew, but also from DFW’s own Quimikoz Del Son (a group to watch, in my opinion).

'Que Divertido' in any language means FUN
In a city far, far, away. In a time not that long ago, stands a small restaurant on the side of the road. Not unlike that of many other Tex-Mex food stops, El Rincon (http://www.elrincon.biz) shines like a neon, blue stop sign for the hungry.
Ha! Way to damn dramatic. El Rincon is on Pecan St., located in Pflugerville, Texas. No, the food is not mind blowing or stunning, but it is good Tex-Mex fare. The margaritas ARE pretty damn good though. El Rincon is a somewhat small, unassuming restaurant from the outside. Inside is about the same. The nice part is an enclosed patio to your left as you walk in. Roomy enough for a band, a couple of large parties, and still have tables for couples and groups of 3 or 4 spread around the area. There is a bar to the backside of this area as well.
I had the wonderful surprise to get home early this particular evening and was told "We are going out. You are taking me on a date, and here is where we are going." Well alright Ms. Cruz! Just about an hour later we arrived - yes AN HOUR drive. Damn well better believe I was thinking 'this better be good!' Nope! The night was better than good, it was F A N T A S T I C!!! We had an order of beef nachos and started on the 'ritas, all while enjoying some really good, wide ranging music.
Son De Rey (http://www.sonderey.com) was camped out this particular evening from about 8 - 11pm. It was a marathon set and they played everything. From Tejano oldies, cumbia favorites, pop and rock covers, their own originals (of course), and even taking some of those covers and re tooling them into stunning pieces. Billed mainly as a latin band, the label does little justice to the wide berth of music Son de Rey can perform well.
Son de Rey is a well rounded band with male and female lead vocals. A frighteningly bad ass keyboard player that does percussion as well. Credit also goes to the guitar player who strummed through all the genres like it was no big deal (really...from 'The Killers' to 'Santana', and 'Grupo Mazz'). The rhythym section of bass and drums was just as solid and had to be to keep up.
Son de Rey kept the patio area packed. As I sat, listened, and watched, it didn't take long to realize there were very few tables available and NO ONE was leaving. I am very glad we got our little spot when we did. The music was fun and lively. The grand mix of music and genres kept the entire crowd happy. There was some crowd participation on songs. There were folks getting up and dancing (and there was no damn space so the dancing was up with the singers) to other songs. All the while the charismatic lead singer Luis, smiled and charmed his way through the entire set. Even going so far as taking song suggestions from out of the crowd. He even had a laugh when the band was called out about the number of songs they had performed by one particular band they were covering. It was wonderful fun.
For a date night I would so do this again. Another, long and fun set by Son de Rey. In a location where the crowd stays happy and dances and sings the night away. Go see them, enjoy yourselves and we may see you there.

Bio
United by a love for Latin music, and similar upbringings in Mexican-American households, Son de Rey has embarked on a remarkable, musical journey that all began with a simple Craiglist Ad. The group sorted through their differences, and started composing songs that reflected their personal hardships and emotions, blending traditional sounds from their Latin heritage, with mainstream American influences.
In August 2012 they released the Ojos Azules – EP produced by Grammy Winner Fabian Hernandez noted for his work with Little Joe Y La Familia, Ruben Ramos & The Mexican Revolution, & Hamilton Loomis. The album reached the top 100 downloads in the iTunes Pop Latino Category and has consistently remained at the Top 10 in the ReverbNation Austin Latin Charts
They were soon invited to join the top Mexican Regional and Tejano artists in a music video filming of “Somos Hermanos,” as featured on Univsion’s Primer Impacto in an effort to fight children’s hunger. Todo Austin Magazine hailed the group as “Austin’s next wave of Latin Rockers.”
They began touring across Texas, with showcases in popular music festivals including Pachanga Latino Music Festival, Pecan Street Festival, Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair, Poteet Strawberry Festival, and El Camino Real Music Festival.
During SXSW 2014 they took home 3 Austin Music Award Nominations including Best Latin Rock Band, Best Latin Traditional Band, and Best New Act in Austin. Soon after, the group was ranked among the top 30 Latin Bands in Telemundo’s Buscando Mi Ritmo competition which searched for the best latin groups in the US. Later that year they released the new single and video “Pray For A Lover.”
In recognition of their accomplishments in music, the City of Austin and Mayor Lee Leffingwell proclaimed February 12, 2015 as “Son de Rey Day.”
Having shared the stage with some of the best in the music (A. B. Quintanilla and Los Kumbia All-Stars, Del Castillo, Ruben Ramos & The Mexican Revolution, Michael Salgado, and Dennis Quaid) Son de Rey continues to raise the bar for new wave Latin music with their dynamic performances, and unforgettable beats.
Son de Rey is currently producing their first full length album, and touring across Texas. The Ojos Azules - EP is available for download on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play.
