A new band has emerged out of Whitby, Ontario (Canada)–a small northern suburb of Toronto–which has taken an interesting approach to the indie rock genre with their first single “Golden Thread”.
The track begins with the subtle chords of a piano layered with pleasant choral vocals, which build up suddenly and disappear into an anthemic burst of toms and snare rim hits, along with the powerful vocal of lead singer Tom Meikle. The track continues to build with the addition of a distorted organ-like lead synth, layered with a deep and fat bass synth, which then drops into beautiful layered vocal harmonies, along with the perfect pluck of guitars. The track then builds and combines all the previous instruments into one for a rocking finish. Check out the video below:
I like this band for a few reasons:
They used a completely non-traditional and organic composition for this song, but still remain within the indie pop/rock realm, which shows their strong musicality. I’m excited to hear what they come up with in the future.
I love when a band has multiple members that can not only sing, but sing well and actually contribute with harmonies as an additional instrument. At least three of their five members can sing, and sing well, as heard in “Golden Thread”.
They are all close friends. As a band, they are going to be with each other for very long, very stressful periods of time, and on tour they will be living together. The fact that they are already all great friends means that they will have a stronger chance of sticking together and making rational decisions when the going gets tough.
Keep an eye on these Canadians, and we will be sure to update you when they release new tracks. - This New Band
Being away from writing about ‘new’ music for the past month has really allowed me to take a step back and realise that there’s just too much of it. Sure, writing about ‘buzzy’ new music is great for website hits, but doesn’t give anywhere near the same level of self-fulfilment as the reaction to an artist seeing the first ever piece written about their creations. Canada five piece Small Town Lungs aren’t the slickest sounding outfit you’ll hear this week; the recording is at times rough round the edges (those vocals though…), but there’s definitely something pretty bold here. Golden Thread may at times be a little Bastille-esque and the drumming feels quite WU LYF inspired, but it’s the confidence and maturity that is most striking. Certainly enough here to suggest that Small Town Lungs are well worth keeping an eye on. - Crack in the Road
