"Motorhead Meets Comeback Kid, Introducing Thrash Punks: SkyTigers"

SkyTigers claim to hail from “parts unknown” and that could apply as much to their genre distinction as it could to their regional origins. Citing influences from Motorhead to Iron Maiden the thrash/metal influence is obvious from the get go but the vocals and overall delivery feels distinctly punk rock, perhaps in the vein of Comeback Kid. They’re raw, fast, angry, and in terms of their new EP “Disasterbation,” they’re free. If you’re looking for something to listen to next time you want to destroy something this is for you. Give the album a listen and snag it for free on bandcamp. - Dying Scene

"Review: SkyTigers – Disasterbation"

Blenders on Fire – SkyTigers’ Disasterbation

To take equal parts punk and thrash, toss it in a blender, light it on fire, and be able to say “Here’s our next release” is one thing. To pour that into a cup, give it to someone, have them drink it, and have them say “Another cup please?” is nothing short of a triumph.

As the listener swishes Disasterbation around their mouth – that’s not spice, but still-burning embers – the three years of effort and patience will taste like sweet, decades-old oak barrels. SkyTigers has brought the best elements of high-energy punk, the exacting harmonic acrobatics of thrash, and classic throbbing riffs built from a clear and sober understanding of rock into the blender, and into your ears.

While it’s no mystery that women can thrash just as well as the best metal guitarists, Rochelle Ferguson’s playing is refreshing in a scene dominated mostly by indie players and folk heroines. Her skill in blending chugging chordal riffs with harmonic overlays crafted with surgical precision bring Disasterbation’s most exciting moments truly transcendent.

This album is extremely balanced, which allows for Ripper Maloney’s crushing drum delivery, Brian Christopher’s Rickenbacker bass riffs, and Johnny El Camino’s guitar create a fullness of sound that – in my personal opinion – is equally displayed live and on this release.

The standout track on this album is “Nobody Puts Baby In a Dumpster (Stillborn in the USA)”, not only for the ripping solo and seamless time signature transitions, but for just how perfectly the choral refrain when Brian Christopher belts out “Stillborn in the USA!” After two listens, I still felt searing chills as the album seemed to come to a roaring head at this moment, and it felt completely fresh each time.

For fans of Anthrax, Megadeth, and other trash-metal heroes, Disasterbation will be a welcome addition to any collection. For punk enthusiasts, the raw energy that bursts through the seems will be exhilarating. For everyone else, I say this release is an incredible introduction to the blending of these two sentiments, for which I’m speaking from personal experience.

Why did this release take three years? Well, SkyTiger’s bandcamp answers that in just the same tongue-and-cheek style that pervades much of their music:

“SkyTigers recorded this ep over the course of three years, not because it is a rock and roll masterpiece, but because we cannot sit still for more than five minutes without getting distracted.”

It’s important to note that fans of Motorhead will also love this release. Not only are the same driving, proto-metal elements rife throughout, but if you’ve seen SkyTigers live you will have undoubtedly enjoyed their cover of “Ace of Spades.” That cover ends this EP in the best way possible – it tells the listener “This music has built us.” A proper tribute from a band that has found their own space in similar styles. - The Lowell Spin

"5 Questions For: Rochelle Ferguson of SkyTigers"

Lowell is easily one of the best places in Massachusetts for high-energy punk rock, and one of the city’s great recent finds is the trio of SkyTigers. The band combines the distortion-heavy noisiness of classic hardcore with an infectious, devil-may-care snottiness, and a general disdain for everything in sight that can be found in all the best modern pop-punk groups like The Lillingtons or Masked Intruder. Recently we caught up with their guitarist Rochelle Ferguson, who is an indispensable provider of frantic, energetic fuzz. But can she answer…

5 QUESTIONS FOR ROCHELLE FERGUSON

1. What’s the last GREAT album you’ve recently listened to?

I’m always clinging to the nostalgia of albums I listened to growing up (I’ll be 80 and listening to Saves The Day – Through Being Cool) but this past year I keep coming back to Crowfeeder‘s album No Flowers. We played a show with them for the record release and I was blown away by how their sound was so full and heavy and melodic and awesome – all as a two piece band. If you haven’t seen them live or heard this album, you should!

2. What band or artist would you most like to share a bill with?

So many! But right now the first that comes to mind is Bad Cop / Bad Cop. I haven’t even seen them live yet but from videos they look like they’re a blast on stage and their music is fun. Love seeing women be musical badasses.

3. What passions and hobbies do you follow outside of music?

I love movies. People hate trying to find a movie to watch with me because I 99% of the time have already seen it. I’ll even sometimes go to the movies by myself.

Oh! and pizza. Very passionate about pizza.

4. What’s the one thing about the music scene as a whole you’d like to change?

On a smaller scale – I’d like to see everyone (Musicians or people who love and are passionate about music) support their local music scene more. Bums me out seeing amazing musicians play shows for like 7 people.

5. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen in someone else’s house?
(This question comes from the previous 5 Questions interviewee Kelsey DiCicco)

Strange things usually end up being cool things to me, but in high school I became friends with a girl and the first time I visited her house I was looking at pictures on her wall of her and her friends. Randomly I see there’s a picture of me getting on the bus. Totally candid, no one else in the photo.

I never knew the pic was taken and we hadn’t known each other yet when it was. It really freaked me out. I stayed friends with her in hopes to not get murdered but she ended up being pretty cool too, sooooo…

SkyTigers will be performing at Opus Underground in Salem, MA on December 21st, and at UnchARTed Gallery in Lowell on January 25th. Their music can be streamed and downloaded at their BandCamp site, while further information and tour dates is available on their Facebook page.

"Rumble Preliminaries: The Best Two Weeks In Boston Rock All Year"

Rumble Preliminaries: The Best Two Weeks In Boston Rock All Year
With prelims a wrap, we witnessed two weeks full of the best collection of live Boston rock performances. These 24 bands brought their A-plus game and laid it out on the stage over six nights. While we went virtually cover free for the first week, save blindspot’s closing instro blast of Rage Against The Machine’s “Bulls On Parade, three new songs join the long list of celebrated Rumble covers (#RUMBLECover). Radio Compass broke the Rumble cover seal with their tiny keyboard rendition of Leslie Gore’s 1963 song, “You Don’t Own Me” on Thursday night. Love Love happened to choose the song for their opening set the next night; SkyTigers’ broke into Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” (definitely one this host’s favorite sets), and Set Fire lit up Zeppelin’s “No Quarter”. We kick it up a few notches with Semifinals weekend this Friday and Saturday. I look forward to what’s to come. Celebrate with us. - Boston Emissions

Bio

SkyTigers are a four-piece punk/thrash band formed in 2010 and consisting of Brian Linehan on bass and vocals, Ryan Moloney on drums, Rochelle Ferguson on guitar and JJ Moloney on lead guitar. SkyTigers draw influence from classic thrash veterans such as Iron Maiden, Metallica and Exodus to next generation crossover-thrash outfits such as Municipal Waste and Ramming Speed. In a 2019 Artist Spotlight, DyingScene.com described SkyTigers as "Motorhead meets Comeback Kid." As a result of their unique writing style, SkyTigers often find themselves at home as the heaviest band on the punk show, or the fastest band on the heavy metal show.

SkyTigers started 2019 off on the heels of the release of their second ep "Disasterbation." From there, the band was a participant in the 2019 Boston Emissions Rock 'n' Roll Rumble, a Boston rock tradition since 1976 with prior participants such as the Dresden Dolls, the Lemonheads, Letters to Cleo, Cave In and Scissorfight, in addition many others that have since gone on to achieve greater commercial success. In August 2019, SkyTigers finished recording their first full-length album titled "Eulorgy" at the Noise Floor in Dover, NH, which will be released this upcoming winter on Sound Investment Records. As a result of the band's talent, energy, hard work and dedication, the 2019 Boston Music Awards have nominated SkyTigers for Punk/Hardcore Artist of the Year.

SkyTigers have no intention of slowing down the momentum they have generated over the course of 2019. Given the attention the band received following the release of "Disasterbation," a self-released five song ep recorded by the band themselves in their practice space, SkyTigers are surely destined for greater success, bigger venues and larger audiences in 2020 following the release of their upcoming full length, "Eulorgy." SkyTigers would very much like to partner with Dunlop as they continue to expand their presence in the music scene. SkyTigers' ep "Disasterbation," as well as their prior release "Appetite for Reconstruction," can be found on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon and most other streaming services, as well as at skytigers.bandcamp.com.
