Bold, authentic, spirit-lifting, soulful, and precision encapsulate the artistic essence of vocalist Sherry Wilson Butler. With her voice and magnetic stage presence, she has an innate ability to root an audience into the depths of a song she is dissecting. Conscious of what an artist is charged to do, Sherry Wilson Butler, definitively directs the energy of her vocal deliverance to affect an audience in a range of emotions from healing, love, grief, inspiration, determination, motivation, and passion. Audiences rise to their feet as she sings, eagerly anticipating her next note. Her sultry, deep contralto voice, leading to comparisons of artists like Sarah Vaughn, Tramaine Hawkins, Phyllis Hyman, and Dianne Reeves, has captivated audiences for more than 30 years in cities across the United States as well as internationally in the Caribbean and Europe.
Sherry Wilson Butler, born and raised in Philadelphia, has a diverse portfolio of artistic accomplishments as a performing and recording artist, actress, producer, writer, and vocal teacher-coach. A beloved veteran in the entertainment business, Sherry Wilson Butler has shared the stage with Patti LaBelle, Gerald Veasley, Teddy Pendergrass, Monnette Sudler, Stephanie Mills, Rachelle Farrell, Billy Paul, and many other celebrated artists. An esteemed artist in her own right, Sherry’s musical capacity is vast as she is well capable of engaging listeners in a variety of genres, including contemporary jazz, soul, pop, gospel, and funk. Over the years, she has awed and inspired audiences at festivals, concerts, small restaurants/venues, large stadiums, colleges, universities, military installations, and corporate and specialty events throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean Islands.
In addition to her musical accomplishments, which include the full-length solo CD, “Truth Is,” Sherry Wilson Butler is an educator and advocate for children’s rights and social justice. Butler has studied at Settlement Music School, Combs College of Music, and was conferred with a Bachelors Degree in Communication Arts and Music and a M.Ed., both from Temple University. Connecting the power of artistic expression and academic achievement is one of Sherry’s passions. She’s a natural teacher, having taught music theory and history to students of all ages for many years. Her goal, to expose young people to music so they will realize their life’s passions—whether artistic or otherwise.
In 2013, Sherry Wilson Butler was awarded the Best Female Vocalist Award from the Philadelphia Clef Club for Jazz & Performing Arts, where she’s currently the lead vocal teacher. Sherry also leads several musical ensembles, and is in the development stages of molding a new group, IGGI-JI (Inter-Genre, Generational, Inter-Cultural, Jazz Influenced) as well as completing her eagerly anticipated sophomore solo album. Utilizing her diverse set of artistic skills, she is also writing a documentary that explores the many facets of women in the entertainment business.
From 2009-2013, Sherry served as president of the Valley Forge Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Filled with spirit and walking in faith with God, Sherry Wilson Butler is married to Thomas J. Butler, a former musician who is a college and career consultant, and she is the proud mother of Rechelle L. Williams.
