Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Francis.
Sebastian, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I started my path in music when it was time for me to make a decision on what college I would be attending. I chose to attend Columbia College Chicago in 2008-2009. At the time, I was living with my brother in Virginia and this was going to be my first time living in a city far away from home, alone. Within the first few days of my arrival, I was so excited to talk to everyone I met that I easily managed to get myself in the right circles. During my first semester in Chicago, I met a group of guys who had already been doing shows on campus named THEMPeople. This was my introduction to work ethic and what it takes to be good at my craft. Fast forward to the end of the school year, I had some financial hardships and could not continue attending Columbia but I stayed in Chicago to continue pursuing my career. I bounced around for a few years trying to find myself and my sound and I had a pivotal change once I moved to Cali. With all of the experience I gained in Chicago, I used my knowledge to establish my brand and started an event called So Soul Sundays. On top of doing the most shows I’ve ever done, I released 4 projects and hosted these events for a year and a half. I also met singer/songwriter Skyler Reed who eventually I ended up dating and we moved to Atlanta. Since the move, I’ve graduated from SAE Institute of Atlanta with a 3.9 and just released my latest project, So Soul Vol. 1.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a producer/songwriter. I use a program called Logic Pro for my production and I record/mix in Pro tools. My sound comes from influences of Hip hop, Neo-soul, RnB, and more. My production style was heavily influenced by J-Dilla, Kanye West, and Pharell. Kanye actually inspired my move to Chicago. The message behind my music is to choose life. The motto for my company is, “to create opportunities for those that want to create opportunities for others.” I want my life, my music, any type of art that I am apart of to be groundbreaking and progressive. The art I create should make the world a better place. I’ve always wanted to be an example that you can change your life for the better no matter your circumstances. Overall, I just want to create a great vibe for people and be able to make music for the people that’s around as long as the happy birthday song.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success for me is defined by the impact of ones work. Of course money is definitely an indicator of success but more so a conduit for energy. I will consider myself successful once I can make at least 10 people millionaires and also be able to help the families of people I work with and people I employ. I want to be able to help poor children go to college and improve their futures. The best investments you can make are in people and I will be successful when everyone around me is successful.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can see my work at Sebastianfmusic.com/SoSoulproductions.com. If anyone wants to follow my social media, all of my handles are SebastianFMusic. People can support my work by streaming my latest releases on any service and sharing the word. Word of mouth is the best form of promo. I also am a man of the people, if you are local and come to a show, I’ve got merchandise that I’m giving out for my latest release.
