"Sea Cycles Offer a Gorgeous Downtempo Shrug With ‘IDKIDKIDK’"

This Autumn, Jacksonville indie synth-pop quartet Sea Cycles will be releasing their full-length debut, Ground & Air. The latest track they’ve shared from the upcoming album is the lovely “IDKIDKIDK,” which is as sighing as its title but (luckily) not nearly so uncommitted. Turn-of-the-century Radiohead synth waves wash over Yo La Tengo-like guitar bends and a sublimely rolling drum shuffle, tied together with appropriately melancholy vocals. “This song is about uncomfortable moments when two people can communicate angst without words,” the band explains of “IDK.” “Just looks and body language. It’s something that everyone experiences that really shows that words aren’t our only connectors.”

"Sea Cycles: A Dreamy Score For Becoming Lost In Thought"

The dreamy, chiming music of Sea Cycles evokes a feeling of awe that invites you to get lost in your own thoughts. With crisp, flittering melodies and rhythms that ping-pong in the headphones, it’s a mellow and cinematic score perfectly suited for late nights alone and meandering through an unfamiliar city with no destination in mind.

Forming in 2011, the Jacksonville, Florida band -- comprised of Brian Squillace, Lindsey Shante, Landon Paul, and Josh Wessolowski -- self-released its EP, What We Came For, in 2012 -- creating a sound informed by bands like Postal Service, Broken Social Scene and the retro synths of Tycho by way of Tron. Now Sea Cycles is set to release its full-length debut, Ground & Air, which further hones the band’s mix of ambient music, rock, and electronic pop. That can certainly be heard in Sea Cycles’ trance-inducing song, “Diving Bell.”

Sea Cycles opens with unison chanting “I’m underneath my diving bell / I am asleep, you cannot tell,” amid warbling frequencies that swirl like tiny electrons in an atom about to burst apart. But soon, those voices give way to an instrumental passage of celestial synth textures and guitar lines that ebb and flow through a series of stirring emotional peaks. Coming late in the album’s sequencing, “Diving Bell” plays like the culmination of a long-winding story. Still, while the song is lovely, its wistful tone conjures a sense of loneliness at the core.

"A large crowd of people can all physically be together in one area, but inside each individual’s head they can be in a very different state" Sea Cycles writes about the song's meaning." It’s like being at a party with tons of happy people, but for some reason your mood has dropped. Inside you know you are emotionally underwater, but no one else can tell." - WNYC Soundcheck

"PREMIERE: Sea Cycles' New Song "Commando" Throws Synthpop Back in Time"

Do you ever think about what would happen if you took a time machine back into the 60s or 70s and started a band then with all the music knowledge you have now? It would probably be nuts, or you'd be a total pariah. Maybe you'd try to be the American Beatles by outright copying Nirvana or whatever, or just play some straight up noise in front of your parents. But it also makes you think, imagine if someone like Syd Barrett fucked around with modern day synthpop. That's kind of what Sea Cycles sounds like. Sea Cycles is a group from Jacksonville, FL that plays a mix of synthy ambient indie. Their song "Commando" is the sonic equivalent of gradually falling into a warm slipstream back in time. The song begins with some spacey guitars that ripple and twist, and as the song expands, it brings in elements of psych-rock, but not in a way that will feel convoluted. Sea Cycles make every sound and buzz in their music expand and explicate into a well-built journey of pleasure. - Noisey

"Sea Cycles Share Synth Pop Voyage"

Jacksonville, FL quartet Sea Cycles are getting ready to release their full length debut Ground & Air, a psychedelic odyssey through modern synth pop, indie, and experimental rock. Due out on June 9th via Other People Records, Sea Cycles are excited to share the record’s first single “Commando” which made it’s debut via Noisey. The band’s music is complex, pairing stunning floating synths with trip-hop influenced beats, haunting vocals, and progressive guitars that all blend together for a tranquil ambiance that rarely stands still. Ground & Air is a record that demands to be listened to from start to finish to fully embrace, but lead single “Commando” is as good a place to start your visionary trip through their sound as any.

“Ground & Air” LP due out June 9th via Other People Records

With the premiere of “Commando,” Noisey compared the band’s intricate sound to Syd Barrett experimenting with modern day synth pop before calling the single, “the sonic equivalent of gradually falling into a warm slipstream back in time.” Elaborating on their sound, Noisey added, “Sea Cycles make every sound and buzz in their music expand and explicate into a well-built journey of pleasure.”

Sea Cycles create an explorative aura with Ground & Air, it’s a transformative record that begins one place and ends somewhere else, changed and ready to be experienced again. When asked about the record the band said, “It’s meant to sit with you the same way a movie score does. It’s a lot of slow builds with colorful explosive climaxes. It’s music for those times when you really daydream, when you let your brain wander. It’s meant as an audio accompaniment to your thoughts.”

Jacksonville, FL has its list of noteworthy artists and musicians like any city does, however if you manage to dig a bit deeper you’ll find an entire thriving ecosystem of bands like when you used to turn over stones behind your elementary school when you were a kid. Among these many creative and talented groups is a band called Sea Cycles, made up from the minds of Brian Squillace, Landon Paul, Josh Wessolowski and Lindsey Shante. Sea Cycles formed in late 2011 and released their brand of ambient synth pop via their self released debut EP What We Came For. After catching the attention of Other People Records, the band are getting ready to release their full length debut Ground & Air via the Los Angeles based independent label on June 9th, 2015. Drawing positive comparisons to indie favorites such as Broken Social Scene, Yeasayer and M83, Sea Cycles has proven the timeless adage that a good band is a good band and theres no arguing with that. - Movement Magazine

"Spirit Cat: Sea Cyces - What We Came For"

Sea Cycles - What We Came For
Jacksonville continues to warm my heart. Once my mind was filled with memories of playing awkward shows and hanging out in a desolate downtown. But now I am jumping at the bits to hang out in Jacksonville. A healthy effort of musicians and business owners has created a growing and diverse music scene.
One of our favorite bands is Sea Cycles. Below, they share with us how the project came together and a little bit about each track on the album. Take some time to really soak this in. Enjoy! - Spirit Cat

"Synconation: Song of the Day"

Sea Cycles possesses an infectious balance of clarity and passion in their sound. I find it invigorating in its integrity and enthusiasm. Not that everyone else making music has nefarious intentions, but their new 5-track album, What We Came For, shows a disencumbered vision. Most of the tracks, including “Tomahawk,” are built around a fragile spine, but with certain direction and a satisfying balance of sparseness, the cerebral, ethereal and even accessible. Lindsey Tuller utilizes her powerful voice unconventionally, positioning it like another instrument and never as an obligatory delivery of verse, chorus, verse. The guitars add rich layers without ever feeling overpowering and the drums are crisp, solid and even interesting. This is a great album period, but I’m even more ecstatic that it’s a Jax-based effort. - Synconation
