My style and/or skills have been compared to: Many greats, so the goal is to work my way into that company.

I started rapping: In elementary school. I found out I had knack for rhyme after I was assigned a project in 4th grade where I had to write a song about the Potawatomi Indians.

My standout records and/or moments have been: Songs like “Stare,” “Round & Round,” & “Decisions” were really big for my career. I think performing on the URB Mag’s Next 100 stage at the 2010 SXSW festival was a major moment for me. In ’09 my team and I set it as a goal to perform at SXSW and the very next year we were there. Showed us how far hard work can take you. Its a tie between that moment and the day I finished recording my debut album Seconds Away, which drops August 30th.

I’m gonna change the game by: Remaining genuine and relatable. I continue to grow as an artist and as a person and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon so as my fans continue to grow with me, the possibilities are endless.

I’d Like to Work With: The list is massive….so I’ll just say anyone that has been or in the process of pushing the envelope of greatness.

My goal in hip-hop is: Impact my generation and ultimately the world. I want to deliver not only music but a brand that people can enjoy and that will inspire them. Timeless is what I’m going for. Hip-Hop is not a bastard music like those outside the culture look at it to be and I want to help show that.

Detroit-native and rap artist, Young Scolla, has received a lot of buzz surrounding his new album, Seconds Away.Scolla, who was profiled in a 2010 issue of The Hilltop, has evolved and put much effort into his latest project.

With 14 tracks, and only five features, he proves he can stand on his own. In the midst of the changing sound of rap and hip-hop, Young Scolla's album can easily be classified as riding or cruising music. A lyrical style similar to early Lupe Fiasco, Seconds Away is full of conscious and raw lyrics pertaining to love and dreams of stardom.

Listeners looking to cool out and vibe to good music while pondering their own thoughts and dreams will definitely enjoy this song. Perhaps one would say Young Scolla exposes his soul and vulnerability on this track. It is all about his hopes, dreams, fears and what he's already thankful for.

Fade Away

With absolutely no rap lyrics, on the track, one may think the person singing is someone other than YoungScolla. Unlike many rap artists today, he sings on a track and actually does it well. One of the longest tracks on the album, "Fade Away" is for anyone needing to relax after a long and stressful day.

What I Need ft. Rico Law

The quintessential hip-hop love song featuring a sultry hook from Rico Law. In this song, Scolla speaks to a girl who we can assume is a very close friend. She understands him and the life he leads. "It's wild bein' in style, only with you when you up, but never there through the trials…there's that one though. You there for me and cause I care, I know I want more". Reminiscent of Jay-Z's "03 Bonnie and Clyde", "What I Need" details the friendship of a man chasing his dreams and a woman who understands what he's going through and wants to be there for him, his ride or die.

If listeners hear the word rapper and expect a sound similar to Travis Porter or Jay-Z, they may be slightly disappointed. Seconds Away is an album for those wanting to relax and listen to quality lyrics. With many rap artists moving towards sampling old songs or trying to come up with a catchy and clever hook, Young Scolla stays true to who he has always been as an artist and provides quality and incomparable music. - The Hilltop: The Student Voice of Howard University

Detroit artist Scolla is a rapper, but he mixes some melody into “Peace,” giving his delivery the slight feel of a more chilled-out, mature Chance the Rapper. It’s soulful with a touch of playfulness, something that would play out well at night with the lights low. Detroit has certainly made their established furrow in terms of the hip-hop culture that is, nurturing producers and emcees like Dilla and Danny Brown, and you need not expect anything less from Scolla, the HD-featured upcoming talent residing in the Motor City. With influences from all the flanks of the hip-hop sphere, the songwriter and emcee has been through quite a journey, altering his production continually and spewing endless verses about significant issues that revolve around the city he grew up in and other personal encounters. His latest piece, “See How It Goes” (which were admittedly a little late on), positions him alongside vocalist Kay Franklin and New York-based beatmaker Drews That Dude—and the fusion of all their sounds together is, without question, a resounding musical success.

A reverberated drum beat sets the piece off with a Kay Franklin vocal sample alluringly in motion, and following is a subtle sweep followed by a highly contagious beat as Scolla’s sole, conquering verse sets in. With motivating lyricism from the very start, the short-lived verse conveys a barrage of notions, in turn provokes a rather uplifting vibe that’s always welcome to hear. The aforementioned Franklin sample finds its way in bits and pieces of the track, giving it the tantalizing backdrop it deserves, and Kay and Drew’s production on the piece is definitely worth mentioning too, as they portray old-school techniques with a forward-thinking mind on the outro of the track, continually accessorizing vocal cuts and Scolla’s unexpected whispers that accent the track. Certainly, the three’s talent makes “See How It Goes” a terrific listen, and you ought to waste no time exploring all the triumphant sonic merits of it below. - HillyDilly

This kid is dope…good beats, catchy records and most importantly substance to his records. I came across a record he has with MGK earlier this year and have been meaning to check him out. Kid is dope period…he has a bright future, with the right team he can go a long way! - XXL Magazine

Last we heard from Detroit-bred artist Scolla as back in 2013 with his offering “Peace,” now he’s back with another smooth one called “Soul Food.”

Produced by Ashton Woods (Dej Loaf), VibeHaus producer HeizenBURR!, and Scolla himself , the song will have you rocking as soon as the chill beat drops. “I said this that, this that shit, that hits your soul, that hits your soul,” he opens on the song, before listing a bunch of plans for the day on the first verse. The song then ends with a message of love.
