Bio
Set to become the next big thing from the South, Skool Boy’s back-to-basics approach using thoughtful subject matter over head-banging beats have launched him into the national spotlight. As one of North Memphis’ most gifted entertainers and songwriter’s, Skool Boy’s intelligence, lovable personality and energetic positivity are what set him apart from the rest.
Hailing from Memphis, TN, Skool Boy recognized his love for music at age 14. After losing a baseball tournament, the young artist took to freestyling as a coping mechanism to release tension. It was the beginning of a new passion for creating music. Known for being wise beyond his years, with an outgoing personality to match, Skool Boy became an instant favorite among his peers. He began street event promotions for Money by Da Pound during his high school years. He later garnered the attention of Hunter Promotions. As a street team promoter for the company, Skool Boy experienced his first taste of fame, rubbing shoulders with artists like Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy, Plies, Soulja Boy, Franchise Boyz and Roscoe Dash. Hunter Promotions later helped Skool Boy release his first song titled “Ride Swerve” at age 18. Skool Boy realized this was the life he wanted to live and the only difference between him and these popular artists, was financial support and exposure.
After the single became an instant radio hit, Skool Boy re-attracted the attention of Money By Da Pound, a Memphis-based indie record label. The CEO hired the budding artist to work in promotions but ended up signing him as their new artist after being blown away by his talent with an unexpected listen to his mixtape. Now with a machine behind him, the sky was the limit for the southern star, who subsequently dropped 15 songs in 2 days after signing to the label.
In 2008 and 2009, Skool Boy collaborated with Soulja Boy and Jibbs, as well as released two mixtapes titled “ Buzzer Beater” and Gym Class,” securing over 10,000 downloads without any major promotion in 2010. From late 2011 to the present, Skool Boy’s genius verses over catchy beats have been in demand in his southern hometown and now nationwide. He’s performed with Gucci Mane, Shawty Lo, Gorilla Zoe, Cash Out, Yo Gotti and French Montana in this year alone.
A major turning point in Skool Boy’s career arrived earlier this year when he released his new single “Be Her Man” and an accompanying unofficial visual that garnered over 7.7 million hits on World Star Hip Hop in just three days. His amazing success shocked even his own label, verifying his status as the industry’s illustrious newcomer. A recent video release of “Go Girl” with Yung Joc and Don Trip has received a crazy reception, setting the stage for Skool Boy’s third single release titled “Dolla Sign” featuring Future.
With plans to unveil the official video for “Be Her Man” by the end of the year as well as to drop a new EP next spring, Skool Boy has taken the music world by storm with his lovable personality, creative lyrics, and energetic vibe. Now that you’ve been “skooled,” stay tuned as this amazinglesson unfolds.
