MerleFest, the “traditional plus” music festival recently concluded in Wilkesboro, NC, hosted the 23rd edition of the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest in 2015. Winners of the four categories were recently announced, and he songs are judged on originality, lyrics, melody and overall commercial potential by a panel of Nashville music industry professionals, a unique opportunity for an emerging songwriter. Some 639 songs were entered in this year’s contest in the bluegrass, gospel/inspirational, country and general categories being narrowed down to 12 participant in the contest held at MerleFest.

Savannah says, “I feel so honored to have been recognized as a finalist in the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest this year,” she told AXS.com in an exclusive interview. “This entire experience, from playing on the Austin Stage at MerleFest to hearing personal words of encouragement from Jim Lauderdale, has been more than motivating for me. One of my favorite moments, and this is hard to choose from the many I had that weekend, was Peter Rowan letting me know how much he enjoyed my song and performance. Savannah, North Mississippi Soul singer-songwriter and guitarist, who has been making waves in the Country/Americana scene since her start in 2012.
Since then she has played alongside members of the Steep Canyon Rangers, Town Mountain, Jim Lauderdale, and Willie Watson (Old Crow Medicine Show). Savannah was a finalist in the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at iconic Merlefest, and recorded a full length record at prestigious Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville. Savannah also had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Outlaw Country’s Whitey Morgan.
Savannah Smith is based out of Asheville, North Carolina, and brings her soulful southern energy to whatever stage she graces. Armed with an uncanny ability to create powerful melodies and lyrics, Savannah captivates audiences with her fiery delivery of well crafted original material.
Her strong soulful vocals, paired with the melodic backings of some of Asheville’s top musicians, evoke strong emotional responses, wowing audiences with her fiery tunes that have folks out on the dance floor all night.
