Ask the Rude Band’s Garret Hansen the key to his band’s success and the Sioux Falls-based guitarist will give you a straight-forward answer.
“We play songs chicks dig,” he said. “If you please the women in the audience, the guys will fall in line.”
“That’s always been our philosophy,” Hansen explained. “and it’s been working for us for the last 18 years.”
The Rude Band will be bringing their blend of poppy, chick-friendly music to South Sioux City’s the Huddle Sports Bar on Fri., Jan. 1 and Sat., Jan. 2.
An original member, Hansen began playing guitar when the band was called “Maxx Boogie & the Rude Awakening.” When the band’s founding frontman, radio DJ Maxx Boogie (aka Kevin Flynn) left the group, Hansen continued with Rude Awakening. For the past two-and-a-half years, Hansen (along with Greg Kleinsasser, Trace Mahoney and Tyson Conn) has been a part of the re-named Rude Band.
“This is one band that has never stopped playing,” Hansen said. “Since 1991, we’ve gone through 15 band members but nobody has left angry. Some may leave for career reasons or family obligations yet the band has continued to thrive.”
According to Hansen, the Rude Band’s longevity is because their music continues to evolve.
“You won’t find us dressing up in crazy costumes or funny hats like your run-of-the-mill lounge band,” Hansen said. “We’re a party band that plays everything and anything.”
That includes having a playlist that incorporates covers from such diverse bands as Metallica and Fall Out Boy to Rascal Flatts and Blink-182.
“We’re not a Top 40 band,” Hansen said. “But stylistically, our sounds changes every year.”
When Brian Setzer and bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy brought swing back for a revival, the Rude Band followed their lead. Likewise, when dance music returned to the mainstream, Hansen’s band boogied down that road as well.
“We’ve always considered ourselves a band without a genre,” Hansen said. “That’s what keep our sound fresh.”
It’s also what keeps the 44-year-old guitarist going after two decades of playing in a band. As a teenager, Hansen remembers listening to more than his share of Bay City Rollers, Bachman-Turner Overdrive and the Steve Miller Band.
“I’ve always been attracted to the ‘pop’ side of music, I guess,” he said. “If the music has a harmony and a melody, I love it.”
This falls in line with the band’s music, which, according to Hansen, is guaranteed to get audiences onto the dance floor.
“You can never go wrong with Journey’s ‘Separate Ways,’ Bryan Adams’ ‘Summer of ‘69’ and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s ‘Fishing in the Dark,’” he said. “Those were the first songs the band learned to play when we started and they’re still the ones we play today.”
Yet Hansen, the father of twin 8-year-old boys, is not afraid to mix things up.
“At home, my family watches a lot of the Disney Channel,” he said. “Perhaps that’s why songs by the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus are turning up on our playlist.”
But that’s on par for a genre-defying band like the Rude Band.
“Believe it or not, we’ve just learned how to cover (Lady Gaga’s) ‘Pokerface,’” Hansen said, smiling. “That’s a little bit out there for us but it’s still exhilarating to master.”
Hansen said while other bands may turn up their noses at such frothy songs, it’s just “a part of the gig” for his band.
“We’re not in (the music business) for the art,” he explained. “We’re in it to make people happy.”

The Rude Band
On any given night you can find them playing “Callin Baton Rouge,” a country classic, and moving right on to “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” a rock power anthem, and then seamlessly glide into the most recent XM Radio hit. Not too long after that, it’s a non-stop dance marathon that includes 80’s and 90’s one-hit wonders, the newest dance club favorites and then “substitute the most recent hip-hop or rap hit here.” At the end of the night, one can expect to hear perennial favorites Zac Brown, AC/DC and Sir Mix-A-Lot—or something completely different!
No genre is off limits, no era is untouched, no hit is out of reach!
The Rude Band’s song list is one of the most varied in the business and people love it. If you walked in off the street and heard them for the first time playing just one country, rock or dance hit, you could easily assume that they were born to play that kind of music and then get completely thrown when the next song is so absolutely different from the last.
Chalk it up to genius or simply ADD, you never know exactly what you’re going to hear when you go to a Rude Band show, but you know it’s going to be fun!
The Rude Band plays an almost non-stop, four-hour show, with only one break. By the end of the night you may be breathless and wondering if you should start working out.
Since 1991, The Rude Band has been packing bars, ballrooms, street dances, private parties, colleges and fairs. With their concert quality sound and lighting production, there’s not many acts that can touch their quality and entertainment value. And, it’s just really hard to believe that they can be so good!
