"Roc O Star chain breaking alternative single Roc O Star – She Work"

Roc O Star chain breaking alternative single Roc O Star – SHE WORK: Every once in a while, I get a totally pleasant surprise in my review box… Roc O Star is a player who knows exactly how to take the situations of everyday life and turn them into music, words and images that have the power to tell the story in a way that helps to break the chains society often tries to wrap around us… check out this high-quality, high-energy video he’s produced for his world premiere…
His tribute to working moms is very professionally produced, and his music digs th’ hook in DEEP, folks… I particularly liked the scenes at the front-end of the video, with the young boy having to watch the potential for abuse and violence – & yet, he comes out of it with RESPECT for his mom… so, Roc O Star is much, MUCH more than “just another player”… he’s a true artist, and I’m looking forward to all his future productions!

In an INTERVIEW with Roc O Star, he lists musical influences as diverse as Muddy Waters, Prince, Bruno Mars, NWA, Linkin Park, and Gucci Mane, and he’s used those influences powerfully and tastefully in his own music. I’ll tell you right now, you’re going to see & hear a LOT more from this high-talent performer, so be sure to SUBSCRIBE to his YouTube channel – I did it right away. Keep your ears & eyes on this cat – he’s got the POWER, folks… & be sure to spread the word to all your friends…

I give Roc O Star a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of a (perfect) 5.00… meaning that he also gets my “PICK” for “best alternative video production”. - Contemporary Fusion Reviews By Dick Metcalf, editor,

"ROC O STAR "SHE WORK "STORY"

February 5, 2018
She Work

The road to becoming a responsible, productive, amazing, and inspiring father may be a scenic route to some, but for others, it’s not always a pretty one. This is the story of an abused child of a single mother, growing up in a world of hurt, pain, and strife. Yes, it’s my story; I’ve endured things no child should ever have to experience. Although my measly means echoed nothing less than being impoverished and the crime-riddled backdrop of my story isn’t a glorious one, I can yet say, by sheer will and determination, along with a dose of mercy and grace, I’ve become a symbol of victory!

Most people have various things they had to overcome during the course of their lives. Some dealt with harsh realities and others not so much. But what is considered hell to some could also be straight-up heaven to others. Each individual has their God-given right to express or tell their story in whatever way they choose. One way for me to express my story is through the platform of music.

The genesis of my childhood was definitely not heaven. My mother worked whatever odd jobs she could find to provide for my brother and me. She worked long hours, and to deal with the pressures of life and disappointments, she self-medicated with pain pills and alcohol. A mother, by nature, fiercely protects her child or children. In my case, my mother constantly beat me. Again, it wasn’t a pleasant home life. Although she beat my brother as well, I seemed to have become the object of her venting. Her anger towards others, including my father, or whatever boyfriend she was dating at the time, was taken out on me, an innocent child whose only mistake was being available to be on the receiving end of her brutality.

If she was having a bad day, I was in danger of being physically abused…AGAIN! It started with belts, then hangers, phone cords, and fists. The beatings became more intense as I got older. I tried to mentally rationalize the abuse I suffered at the hands of my mother by convincing myself that all kids get whippings from their parents. “That’s just what parents do!” From an early age, I thought my name was “Motherfucker”! Why? Because that’s what I was referred to so many times, that’s who I thought I was.

My brother, I thought, was one lucky guy. One day his dad came and got custody of him. You can say it was lucky for him, but bad for me. Now I had no one to share the beatings with. So naturally, I was punished more and severely. My living environment was so unstable that I was shuttled from home to home nine different times. Then one day, my dad, whom I hardly knew, came to my rescue and I ended up moving in with him.

Finally, I had the father I always wanted and needed. My father had fought in the Vietnam War, and it had definitely taken a toll on him mentally. I soon was discovering more about my dad; he was a substance abuser, too! To my dismay, my hopes and dreams of having a stable home and great father in my life were short-lived. And even though it was rough, I respect my mother for raising my brother and me. She tried to do her best with what she had and knew.

The Bible tells us to honor our mother and father, and I lived by that. I had to learn how to come to terms with the blows life dealt me, and I used those experiences to break the cycle of abuse and raise some amazing children of my own. They have been trained to be their best. They have never been abused. They have been taught values, great social skills, and most importantly, how to love and treat others. From the ashes of the personal hell of my youth, I was able to rise up above my circumstances and become a great musician, producer, and successful businessman.

Yes, this is my story and a story that is relatable to many others. Single mothers are the backbone of the family structure and our communities. I salute all single mothers who used their power within to overcome the impossible! - WOMEN FOR ONE MAGAZINE

"ROC O STAR PREPARES FOR 2018"

Los Angeles-based artist Roc-O-Star was born and raised in Anderson, Indiana by his biological parents before being sent into foster care. “Growing up on your own often meant you have to do what you have to do to survive, and I did – you either hustle or you don’t eat,” he says. “I’ve slept on many streets until I was finally able to save enough money to live a more settled life.” Over the years Roc-O-Star developed his sound, a mix of rock, soul and hip-hop which he calls ‘thought music’. “Driving” is the first installment of his forthcoming EP Face 2 Face, a story in five parts which will be told through sound and visuals. He produces all his own music, and currently has a catalog of 3,500 unreleased songs. His music has been placed with Puma Stage, FitBit, Xbox, Apple and Coca-Cola. He has toured in Germany, China & Japan. Furthermore, he was the lead singer for Black Steel Rose on the Bamboozled and Warped Tour.

How did you come up with your stage name?

Roc O Star represents a collective of meanings that wasn’t too hard of a task for me to conjure. Firstly, “Roc” is my etymology on the word Rock, which represents toughness and solidness. I realized early on in this business and game of entertainment, I had to maintain a certain measure of toughness. Not only to foster longevity in the business and creative sectors of the game, but also in order to have the ability to mentally endure the disappointments all artists encounter in this business. The “O” represents the word “Opportunity.” This is something I refuse to just squander away. I’m taking full advantage of my gifts and I’m using them for the betterment of my life and the lives of my loved ones. The surname ‘Star” represent the person I am…a star! And I mean this before the inclusion of music or Roc O Star the artist character. An example of what I’m saying would be; I’m a father, basically a beloved rock star and hero within my own household. So hopefully, the public will feel that and recognizes my fullest potential, and will love and support my creative efforts and stage performances and consider me a star as well!

What made you decide to get into music?

Music came natural to me. To be honest, music was passed down to me from my dad’s side of the family. Tragically, he died of alcohol abuse. Music, I think, was God’s way of creating a way out of chaos for me. My mom is still alive, but she is travelling down the same path as my late father. I never had a strong positive role model. I essentially raised myself. Growing up on your own means you do what you have to do to survive and I did…I hustled or I wouldn’t have been able to eat. I slept on many streets until I was finally able to save enough money to be settled. Growing up, everyone I knew was into rap music but I always wanted to be different. I loved rock with a mix of soul, and then I added a touch of hip-hop, which synergistically helped me with creating my own style. Rock Music, like rap, is a great medium in which I can express real life issues while inspiring others to make better choices and avoid the pitfalls that I’ve experienced.

What’s the first rap song you ever heard? Describe the moment.

The first rap song I was introduced to is a song called “Straight Outta Compton,” recorded by the L.A. based hip-hop group, NWA. I felt the intensity of the their music and it was exhilarating. My oldest brother was the one who turned me on to NWA. I really liked their music because I could relate to them through the experiences of my up bringing. Now the first artist I got into wasn’t a rap artist at all, it was Muddy Waters. I found an old Muddy Waters vinyl record in one of my dad’s cases full of records. That is what initially inspired me to want to do music. I utilized the love for those old records and just added the rough edge sensibilities of my up bringing, combined a twist of rock and soul, and now I’m trying to share it with the world!

How did “Driving” come together?

My first single is “Driving “ which is part 1 of a 5 part mini movie series about my life. Driving will take you down one of the many roads of my life where instead of going with my instincts, I let negative influences have sway which were the root cause to the many mistakes and foolish decisions I’ve made in life! And ultimately, I had to pay for them. In a nutshell, the video gives the viewer an inside look on many risks I’ve taken to feed my young daughter. Wrong or right, to me, at the time, it was all about survival.

What are your predictions for 2018?

Well it depends, for me, as an artist, I think 2018 will be a year of breakthroughs and trailblazing. I’ll be able to expand my fan base and brand myself even more through my music. I think a wider acceptance of the integrated genres that is used to create my sound will have less of distinct lines of separations. Its like gumbo soup…a little bit of rock, a little bit of soul, and little bit of hip hop. Heey, its tastes great and there are a lot of people that loves gumbo! Its like Roc O gumbo of the music world! Whatever happens in 2018, I just hope to be happy and satisfied doing what I love; creating music that I love and feel and inspiring someone to be a better them. For me, that will be an awesome year! - 1ST DAY FRESH.COM

Roc O Star “Driving ” (Official Music Video) – [Music Review]

First of all, when Roc O Star says:

“I make music that normal people can relate to”

Instantly, he is set aside from the “new mainstream” ( all that shines and glitters is popular) with the grass-root, humbled mentality of the struggling artist.

Here’s my take on this single “driving”… There’s music that sounds pretty good. That is, it’s professionally done, well crafted, in-tune —made by folks that know what they’re doing. I accept that it’s, for lack of a better description —pretty good. Then there’s stuff that just plain sucks. I can hear it, and after about four seconds (literally, sometimes less), I know beyond a doubt that it’s just fu$%ing horrible; terrible lyrics, no groove, and so un-masterfully wrought that it begs to be turned off or burned; which ever can be accomplished more quickly.

But then, there’s music that comes from the unknown. Music with a strangeness that is at first, both annoying and arresting, music with a depth which proves that it issues from the mind of someone who has known pain and hope and unthinkable sorrow —someone, in other words, who knows a bit about life, and not from the outside, but from the core. Roc O Star is that musician. “driving is a song about how a serious of bad decisions lead to his incarceration. Roc O Star says he’s “Not a glorified entertainer” He just wants to teach people to learn from his mistakes. There is no happy ending to hustle.

ROC O STAR STORY

Beyond the superficial, and yet often unadorned musical offerings that are so associated with emerging artists of today, it is only habitual and instinctive to ask the question, who is Roc O Star? Well, when talent meets rock music and a realistic story, synergistically, it can create a combustion that is poised to change the face of rock music, as we know it...that is Roc O Star! Now back to the question, some may know Roc O Star as a solid producer and writer that has been working behind the music scenes. Others recognize him as a loving father and a successful gym owner. Roc O Star is much more than the expectations from his often-dismal life experiences, which are reflected in many of his songs. He is a true testament of coming from nothing, with nothing, armed with nothing except a love for music and determination. This was enough to aid him in overcoming many of the traps of his dilapidated surroundings and chaotic ills of the streets. Sure, he went through a period of his life where he fell prey onto the ill tracks of urban society, but he learned its lessons, worked tirelessly to change his mind body and soul, and did a 180-degree maneuver to change the trajectory of his destiny.

Roc O Star inherited the proverbial “music genes” from his paternal side of his family. Unfortunately, his father, who was an extremely gifted man with a modest hit, died tragically of alcohol abuse. His mother, though still alive today, finds herself spiraling down the same path as his dad. While growing up, Roc O Star didn’t have the most desirable parental guidance and often found himself at the helm of every major decision and life choices made which affected his life at such a young and vulnerable age. Left alone, to practically self raise himself, this disadvantage caused him to quickly adapt a hustle or die mentality. This meant he had to do whatever was necessary to survive. Reflecting on those days, Roc O Star says, “Growing up on your own often meant you have to do what you have to do to survive... and I did – you either hustle or you don’t eat! I’ve slept on many streets until I was finally able to save enough money to live a more settled life.” Roc O Star goes on to say, “Growing up everyone was into rap but I’ve always wanted to be different, so rock and a mix of soul was my thing – then a touch of hip hop help me create my style. Rock music, like rap, is a way I can express real life issues and help others make better choices than I did.”The Music

Roc O Star’s music is rock with soul and a splash of hip-hop. This untapped lane is what set him apart from many artists today. This affords him the opportunity to be a global and worldwide star. In addition to the songs, he uses great visuals in his videos to help convey messages of change, hope, despair and inspirations, as told through the backdrop of his personal life experiences. With a strong desire to succeed, Roc O Star is quickly building a reputation as an artist who can merge rock, soul and street level realism with a honesty that will afford him the ability to solidify a fan base that may last well beyond this current age of fast-fading in a twinkling of a eye gratification within the music industry. Not one to be pretentious with all the gaudy trappings as in most videos, Roc O Star distances himself from being fake, but would rather express messages that will serve as an inspiration in helping others to learn from his mistakes. In the finality of it all, he evinces that “There is no happy ending to hustling!” He makes music that normal everyday people can relate to. Roc O Star goes on to say “I fight for the little guy. There are hundreds of millions of me out there that do what they have to do to put food on table.”
