Denverites Adrian Garcia (A-Trax), Lennard Daniels (Lennyx Dublyn) and Jeremy Barnes (JT) make up the core of the hip-hop collective Planes! The three have all been rapping since they were young, in the last few years started working together.
"It just kind of came together," Garcia said. "Everybody compliments each other well."
The group has a total of about ten people, including producers, photographers, DJs and others who allow them to keep all of their operations in the family. They all use the moniker, though the artists on each of their songs and albums differ. The new song "Culture" features only Garcia and Barnes as part of their forthcoming 94 mixtape. We're debuting the video below -- it was filmed in three days by Darion Sanchez (D-Mainya), the filmmaker of the group, and edited in two days by Garcia.
"The video before this, 'New Batch,' we went all out," Garcia says.
"This one - it's not that we didn't try hard but we wanted to keep it simple so that it wouldn't be too much on the viewer," Barnes says.
The song is meant to be a revival of the original "rawness" of hip-hop culture. "We just like everything hip-hop; the fashion, the music, the art behind it, the graphics, the videos, everything," Barnes says.
Though the rappers see an opening market in Denver for hip-hop, it is still a struggle both to become relevant and to stay relevant. "You always have to be dropping music or you'll stop being relevant," Barnes says.
"If you wait two, three years in hip-hop, you're done, no one will remember you," Daniels says.
They both love and hate the technology available in hip-hop for making beats and recording, because it allows for a finished product almost as soon as it is created. When they have an idea, they can get it out quickly, but if they aren't constantly creating music, they risk losing their audience.
"It's a blessing and a curse," Daniels says. "And that's why [the industry] is flooded, 'cause everyone can do it."
In order to stand out, Planes! not only tries to make music frequently, but they solidify the music with CDs, a solid online presence and marketing. They have also created an LLC behind the Planes! brand and have branched into clothing.
"Every six months that we've been together as a group, we've taken a step up," Daniels says
"We're always moving forward and that's something that people notice, because we're not in the same place where we started," Barnes says.
Though there are still barriers to break through, hip-hop is such a rapidly evolving genre that they don't worry they will have significant new opportunities in the coming years.
"It's a hyper genre," Daniels says. "It's hyper fast, hyper sensitive, hyper violent."
Planes! will be performing at the Westword Music Showcase on June 21, and you can get their music at planes303.com. -
Planes! The group that consists of MC’s, deejays, videographers and other creative giants, are one of Denver’s hottest breakout groups. Throughout history hip-hop groups have pioneered the landscape of the genre, though the art of the crew was phased out for a number of years. Wu-tang Clan, OutKast and others have continued being the driving force behind rap crews but it’s been in only recent years we’ve seen a resurgence from these groups.
JT Running Man, Lennex Dublyn, DJ MakeTrix, Ace, Déjà vu, Just Pounds and other Planes! Affiliates are aiming to change that concept. The debut album New Batch caught my eye immediately because of its hard-hitting beats and rhymes tinged with just enough flippancy to garner rambunctious appeal, Planes! Were a perfect addition to the Roux Black mixtape. The guys showed up to my office with a brand new song on CD within days of the agreement for their inclusion. “Richie Rich” is a perfect club track with street appeal, all while maintaining an underground swagger Planes! Is used to.
2014 has been a breakout year for the crew, having shared the stage with Cyhi Da Prince and performed at the Westword Music Showcase, Planes! Are the ones to watch. We kept it grimy with the crew over blunts and hilarious conversation. Check out who the crew thinks are the best rappers in the city, some of their most rowdy moments, and of course, the introduction to “Richie Rich.”
How many of you have ever been in a bar fight?
JT: Lexo has for sure. Well I was in a house party brawl. We were at a house party for Halloween and long story short, security started tripping with us and I told D to hold my 40 and it got really crazy.
What’s the grimiest circumstances under which you performed?
Group: Maxim Lounge
Favorite color:
Just Pounds: Purple and orange.
Lexo: Red
Déjà vu: Blue
JT:Black
Ace-Red
Who are the top five rappers from the state that do not include any members of Planes!
Ace- Trev, F.L. Catch Lungs, Mr. Midas and PDS.
JT-Trev, PDS, AP, Catch Lungs, Mr. Midas.
D Maino: Mr. Midas
Lexo- PDS, Typhy, Catch Lungs, Trev Rich, 2Bigg, Colfax Cac (for the old school heads who remember Cac)
Just Pounds: PDS, Typhy, Mr. Midas, Trev Rich, Arapahoe Trues
If you could sum up Planes! In one sentence and that sentence is…..
Group: Weed smoking rapping ass music loving, hip-hop egotists.
Who is the Beyonce of the group?
*Everyone points to JT Running Man with laughter.
The Kanye of the group?
Group: Ace by unanimous decision.
Tell me about the song you chose for the Roux Black mixtape, “Richie Rich.”
JT Running Man: You know, we really got inspired and decided we gotta kill it for Ru and make sure she knows it was tight. We went into the studio, had no beat at first. Ace makes this beat and then I just started rhyming the hook and it came together perfectly.
With such a huge group, what are the roles everyone plays in the group?
Ace- I’m sort of the leader along with Lexo. I do anything I can put my hands on, rap, produce beats, edit videos. I handle all of the website and business stuff as well.
JT: AKA Beyonce’ I just rap all the time. If there is a song you want to kill, I just go in and do it. I also know a lot of people and am a founding member of the group. I help make connection for the business, too.
Deja: The photographer and the baby brother of the group. I’m the youngest, joint roller, soon to be helping with fashion. Founder of the “Real Nigga Morals” group.
D: I work on the videos and also the photos as well. I help with editing, shooting, helping DJ Maketrix keep things set-up and together as well.
Lexo- I rap. I’m the number 2 behind Ace. I try to fill in the gaps. I take care of a lot of business stuff and I am like the old wise man. I’m the RZA. I just fill in the gaps and do what I can to get these albums out. I am also one of the fashionable parts about the Planes!
Just Pounds: I produce beats and keep everybody out of trouble. I’m kind of the dad of the group but also the A&R.
Listen to “Richie Rich” below and be on the lookout for Planes! As they prepare to take the stage for the second annual fan appreciation showcase on October 2nd at The Oriental Theater. Tickets are available for purchase here. -
Planes! is as much of a rap collective as it is a business. From a hierarchy to roles to a shared goal, the large group is all moving in the same direction: towards success through financial freedom and notoriety. The fact that they recently incorporated Planes! LLC only validates this point further.
Meeting with the group - which boasts anywhere from 9-12 key players at a given time - could be considered intimidating, but their vibrant personalities, playful language and expertly crafted style is as charismatic in real life as it sounds. Like any business machine, Planes! has many individual members, each with their own roles and skill sets. And each, in true rap fashion, with an unorthodoxly spelled name, as Lexo puts it, “It’s our job to destroy the English language.”
Ace A-Trax Boogie, is a rapper, graphic designer and video editor for the group. “Anything I can do, I do. Pretty much anything and everything possible.”
DJ Maketrix doesn’t waste his breath in the presence of his animated cohorts, “I DJ, yep.”
D-Mainya may very well be the “craziest motherf*cker in the Planes!” but as a videographer and director, he’s also the “man behind the camera” with his crazy eye is always looking for the perfect shot.
Daejha Vu holds it down as a photographer and acts as a roadie for DJ Maketrix, ensuring smooth set-up and break down. Also, as a self-proclaimed “expert joint roller,” a sentiment echoed by the others, his other role seems to be keeping the crew lifted.
JT Runnin Man is the “main rapper” of Planes! and also the social media expert, but he’s cool if you just call him “that n*gga.”
Just LBS, which can be read literally or as it implies, may have a voice a few notches quieter than the others, but his confidence sure isn’t. “Probably the freshest n*gga in the crew, to be honest,” though this statement was met with much dissension from the others. As the producer, and self-professed “dad” of the group, he stays behind the scenes, at least on paper.
Lennex “Lexo” Dublyn’s maturity is not only in appearances, “I am definitely the oldest n*gga in Planes! Ain’t nobody f*cking with my age.” He raps, but also handles much of the business side of the game. “I try to keep us with some money, and outta jail.”
The enormous group’s history can be credited to the rec center, well that and the friendship of two fifth graders. Ace and JT were longtime friends, and though they had a few misconstrued falling outs, they are the originators of Planes! The pair started recording their raps with a karaoke machine and a tape deck, and after several years, with many new friends they are now where they are today.
Though Planes! is mad stylish, it’s hard to nail down any true categorization or direct influence as a collective, and it may be due to the fact that they didn’t struggle in the same way that some of their rap predecessors did. “I don’t think any of us came from a super poor, ghetto ass spot, you know what I mean?” says JT Runnin Man, “You can’t probably see too many stories on our faces because we haven’t been through a lot of stuff. “
One thing the large group seems to disagree on is their affiliation or love for hip-hop. Some are passionate about it, claiming the culture as influential, while others denounce the term. But despite the disconnect, they have to acknowledge the roots, though Lexo is not faithful to the genre, “I cheat on her [hip-hop], but I love her. But when I’m done cheating with techno or rock, I always come back to her.”
Though they are many, they focus on a polished output. They rehearse for shows, they keep clean appearances and they stay hydrated. Try to catch Planes! without a bottle of Figi Water. When asked to go through their dream show riders, it was the first and most passionate response.
Their blatant, unabashed honesty is probably one of the most refreshing things about Planes! Their confidence is apparent, and could even be construed as obnoxious, but it’s real- and isn’t that everything that hip-hop is supposed to be? So, even if they are disenfranchised by the fickle genre, they inadvertently define its appeal.
“We make our own statement; we’re not really a reflection of where we came from. We’re a reflection of where we’re going.” – JT Runnin Man - Nicole Cormier
One of the greatest qualities a musician can possess is the ability to not give a flying fuck. Jeremy “JT” Terrell and Adrian “A-Trax, Ace Boogie” Garcia have crafted this quality together over the past 10 years.
They’ve been rapping alongside one another since both were fresh out of diapers and growing up deep in the Northside. A-Trax and JT’s relationship is illustrated though a cohesive, concentrated style throughout their work. Most recently the two rising locals have crafted Planes! (the exclamation mark is there on purpose), a collective of like-minded individuals and burgeoning creatives.
It’s no secret the two love to work together. We remember seeing and hearing their music during days past and automatically noticed the chemistry between them, almost as if they’d been carved from the same block and fed the same delicacies. It’s that apparent.
Now, it’s their turn to grab a smidge of the spotlight. With a life long partnership in tact, the two hip-hop visionaries are set to take us back to the ‘90s. Or as historians will undoubtedly call it, the “pre-Myspace era.”
Next Tuesday, Nov 11, JT is set to release his latest work in the form of a mixtape entitled “1994”. While it will stand as a solo project (differentiating from past collaborative projects with Planes!), it still has heavy Planes! influence. A-Trax produced over half of the album and took care of the cover art.
JT is known for flexing his voice when he is given a chance to showcase sincere rapping abilities. His flow, concepts, and energy never goes unnoticed. The mixtape is aptly titled for its old school sensibilities, focuses on original sounds and traditions of the genre (samples, heavy rhyming, ect.).
Planes! also has an upcoming show at the EXDO Event Center opening up for A$AP MOB and OG Maco this Saturday, Nov 8. Our own RoosterTV will be there live as it plans to be a wild night. We’ll get to see JT, A-Trax and the whole gang as they promise to turn up, no questions asked.
Except these:
How long have you two known each other?
JT+A: Since the 5th grade, so about 10 years. We started rapping that same year on a karaoke machine recording our songs on tapes.
Where in Colorado did you grow up?
JT: I’ve lived all over Denver but born and raised in the Northside
Ace: I’ve been in the Northside my whole life.
How do you guys craft a unique sound for the Planes!?
JT+A: It came together slowly through time. As the group came together we just never gave a fuck about anything, and we just wanted to make music that we would listen to even if nobody else did, and pay respect to the artist that we grew up on.
Was there a certain angle you took on this project?
JT: When I made it, I pretty much knew I wanted it to be a mixtape of all samples and more of that original Hip Hop style. Also, I wasn't trying nothing new or experimenting with my style, I was just sticking to what I'm good at. Raw flows and classic beats, kinda like Biggie in '94.
What do you hope this project accomplishes?
JT: Definitely just gain the respect I feel I deserve in the Denver rap scene as well as gaining exposure for my crew and I. I want people to see the talent we have and what we bring to the table.
Did you listen to any music in particular during the creation of this album?
JT: Three of my all time favorite albums that made me want to start doing music in the first place, Redman “Muddy Waters,” Notorious B.I.G “Ready To Die,” Rap-A-Lot “10th Anniver-sary”.
Who influences your musical approach the most?
JT: Redman, Biggie, Lil Wayne, Gucci, Cam'Ron and of course Kanye and Jay Z ... and you can't forget the BasedGod.
What is the most important aspect about your music that makes you unique?
JT: Me personally, I feel like its my lyrics, flow, and delivery. I've pretty much perfected the art of rap and I’m not afraid to let people know.
Can you describe how you view the hip-hop industry today, and what lane you see yourself in?
JT: Honestly, I’m unimpressed with most of today’s artists, but I do find light in a lot of underground rappers. As for the lane I find myself in, I feel like were creating our own lane that maybe hasn't been seen before. Id be lying if I said I didn't want to make money like Jay Z, but I’m not planning on selling out to do so either. I’ll just take the cards God deals me and see what happens.
Is there any top-secret info about the project you can give The Rooster?
JT: I don't want to reveal to much, but if you’re a ‘90s kid, it'll bring you back to that ‘90s style of hip-hop that we all know and love. And if you’ve never heard JT or Planes! be prepared to have your mind blown.
On “1994”, you (Ace) play a big aspect in the production. How do you craft the right sound, having known JT for so long?
Ace: I feel like it comes natural for both of us because we have grown up together and listen to the same artists. I knew what type of sound he was looking for in this mixtape and it was the style we both grew up on so it kinda just came to me natural.
How did you get your start producing?
Ace: My brother downloaded FL Studios back in the 5th grade and I just started playing with it and taught myself how to use it. By the time I was a Junior in high school I was making full out beats that I would use for my own music and mixtapes. I just kept growing with help from a Digital Audio Production program I took my senior year and just working with different artists and producers these past few years.
You handled the artwork for “1994,” where did that inspiration come from?
Ace: We knew we wanted something more ‘old school’ and raw looking so we found that record spot at the Basementalism Radio Station up in Boulder when we were doing an interview. It just worked out perfectly and JT trusts me 100 percent with everything else because we like the same things. I just wanted that ‘90s feel.
Is it difficult going from rapping for your own full album to just helping out with the production? You must want to rap on every beat.
Ace: No, not at all, it’s actually much easier. I love rapping, but I rather use my creativity for beats, graphic designs, and music videos. I still rap whenever I have a beat that really inspires me, but I know JT or Lex (Lennex Dublyn is another Planes! member) won't ever let me down verse wise so it’s actually hard to keep up with them. I just want to make the best music we can possibly make.
You have an upcoming show with A$AP Mob and OG Maco. Can we expect to hear some of the mixtape then?
JT+A: You won't hear any because the songs are more of that ‘90s hip hop boom bap style, and for A$AP we wanted to turn up the whole set with our more wild music.
What is next for the Planes!?
JT+A: After “1994” we’re planning on dropping our 2nd album spring 2015. We don't want to reveal too much about it now, but just know it's gonna be hot and full of head banging drug dealing/using music. (laughs)

The last time we spoke with innate emcee JT he was releasing a stand-out solo effort titled “1994” while furthering the legitimacy of the brand the young creatives in the Planes! collective have built over the past year. Today, we are proud as pie to give our readers the exclusive premiere of the first single off of the new album, “R.I.C.O,” due out in spring 2015.
“M.O.B” is what we’ve come to love about Planes!. A combative beat couples perfectly with rappers JT, A-Trax, and Lennex Dublyn, who fill verses with ad-libs and inventive rhymes. The song punches forward quickly with an anthemic, chanting chorus and all artists feed off of each other throughout. JT is presumably the most polished, but A-Trax and Lennex Dublyn bring flare and charisma with solid lyrics.
The video — shot and edited by folks in the collective themselves — showcases everyone involved going insane with passion through painted Denver alleyways and keeps the video on track with the song’s high energy.
The title of its album, “R.I.C.O.” relates to the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act of 1970, a federal law that was passed to combat organized crime in the United States.
“It was a fun album to make,” says A-Trax about the album. “We turned up and just did what we do. A lot of people claim this and that, but one thing I know is we just remained to ourselves and made the music we love to make. It's about the love for the music and we love doing what we do.”
Make sure you stay on the look out for the Planes! album coming this spring so the collective can help you turn up and burn up.

If you’re a Denver local that is into rising hip hop then you are probably already aware of Planes!. If you don’t happen to know about this talented crew on the rise this should be a fitting introduction. This new video for ‘M.O.B.’ is the first taste of ‘R.I.C.O.’, their sophomore album that is due out sometime this Spring. Following up their debut release ‘New Batch’ from last year which put these guys on everyones radar this new one is sure to be a head turner. For those of you unfamiliar with Planes! it’s important that you understand these guys are more than just a hip hop group, they are a collective of artist that span everything from MC’s, to producers, photographers, videographers, and graphic designers. Pretty much any outlet you can think of these guys have a hand in it. ‘M.O.B.’ was chosen as the first single from the new album because it shows the groups new sound which is a sharp contrast to last year ‘New Batch’. To sum it up, they deliver us a hard hitting, trunk knocking hip hop track that is sure to have you throwing your hands up and turning up wherever it finds you. Hopefully this is enough to tide you over for the whole album because we know that after rinsing this single over and over we can’t wait to lay an ear on the entire release! - Nate Fyffe
