From the Great Lakes city of Toronto, Ontario, Kyle Woolven , a DIY electro-pop multi-instrumentalist and college student, self-released his first recording as Pekoe Cat on August 23rd, and sent us in a couple of his tracks. While this entry, from what we were able to find out, is the first time his music has been featured on a music blog, and his debut as a recording artist, we don’t really know very much about him because he didn’t provide very much information about himself.
However, if enough people stream, download, comment, Like and Retweet this post, referencing Pekoe Cat, we will run another post as a follow-up to in an attempt to obtain more information about him, and more songs as well. As of the time this post was published, Pekoe Cat doesn’t even have any type of website – a blog, Facebook page, Tumblr or Bandcamp. We have a feeling as his songs are spread around more that that’ll change pretty fast.
- Indie Rock Cafe
Self-labelled as “the artist you’ve never heard of,” Belleville, Ontario singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Pekoe Cat is back with a funky new number that possesses an earworm of a hook and enough 70’s vintage vibes to have you reconsidering where you are and what year it is. Don’t let that stop you from grooving out though – ‘Game Over‘ is good.
Video game synths and tight bass lines melt away into a refrain that taunts the listener to shoot him, making ‘Game Over’ sound like it may very well be the end for the talented singer. No respawning this time? We certainly hope so, because with this kind of output I am excited to hear what he’ll come up with next.
As a matter of fact, the enigmatic Cat dropped a new psychedelia-inspired folk rock song ‘Superstore’ just a few short days ago. You can find that along with all his other undiscovered gems on Soundcloud. - Indie Underground
Pekoe Cat is a new act bursting at the seams with creative energy, on new track “Test” reminding strongly of early Ariel Pink with the creative lo-fi vocal production and melodic development, alongside a galloping percussive psych rhythm reminiscent of Tame Impala. A yearning croon at 01:40 signals the entry of the central hook, with a thunderous psych guitar descending upon the layered sound at 01:48 to really lift things up. Somewhere between colorful lo-fi Ariel Pink pop and expansive psych-rock, “Test” finds considerable success in its fully consuming presentation.
The track comes off Pekoe Cat’s new album Digital Chaos, one of the more impressive new releases of 2017 thus far, with gems ranging from the psych-folk pull of “Superstore” to the colorful “Rollercoaster Ways”, which sports some nifty Animal Collective vibes: - Obscure Sound
