Parlor Tricks effectuates seven songs in vivid industrial ragtime splendor. A red hot version of “Was I Drunk, Was He Handsome, and Did My Ma Give Me Hell?” kicks off the recording—a cover of Dorthy Dunn’s 1931 Ziegfield Follies runaway smash—with smoldering, seductive vocals and smoking improvisational flights from the band.

Over the course of five days in July 2007, dozens of musicians wandered in and out of Second Act Studio in Irvington, NY to record holiday favorites. Parlor Tricks contributed one original—Under the Tree, which has been heavily featured by Rumblefish—and two rocking covers, Away in a Manger and Deck the Halls. All three songs are what you would only expect to hear from a band hardened to sappy sentiment and steeped in a musical stew equal parts Josephine Baker and Ramones. They are, in short, completely unexpected. Available at Garagista Music.

Parlor Tricks is the world's first and foremost industrial ragtime band, a hot-music quartet led with sultry vocals, resonator guitar, upright bass and drums. The music is a mix of early 1900s pop and originals, all distinguished by syncopation and stomp.
We call our music "industrial ragtime" because we keep one musical eye on the music of the last century, the other on blues and rock. We are booked for Speakeasy, Steampunk and other vintage and creative events. Everything we do fits firmly under the flag of great entertainment -- lead by our engaging and beautiful lead singer Melina Selverston. The fun and excitement of this hot music is infectious.

Parlor Tricks grew out our great love of ragtime music first heard on phonographic cylinders and 78 RPM records, the popular music that came to be blues and jazz. We have captured the immediacy and infectiousness of Louis Armstrong, the fun of early jazz, the foot-tapping melodies and swing that connects deeply with all generations.
What we offer is original and creative, a meeting of the prehistory of pop with the modern. We're a band that's together for the love and exploration of this music. We will surprise and delight your guests and bring the authenticity and originality that you demand and deserve.
