The Bullitt Bar was packed with music fans waiting to see Orlando band Our Future Leaders, a band that not only works hard promoting themselves, but also works just as hard promoting other bands as well as the local music scene. The four piece band was shrouded in darkness as they took the stage to their mood setting intro tape, kicking their set off with “Machines.” The band’s rock music does not easily fit into any sub-categories, it is so different from one song to the next, showcasing the depth and range of the band members’ musical influences. During their set fans got to hear songs with intense, aggressive edges, “Kill the Youth,” as well as songs with a tender, softer feel, “Desire,” and everything in between, but that’s the way it is with Our Future Leaders’ music. We may not have to be machines but these guys might be. From the first song they deliver powerful riffs with hard hitting rhythm. There’s no stopping them. When I reached the song “Obtain” it was clear that this band has depth and range. The last song left me amazed. “American Dream” is a poetic, and meaningful song that shows us that these young men have great music future before them. Machines is the debut EP from Orlando band Our Future Leaders. It doesn’t sound much like a debut release, it has much more depth than one would expect from a first recording, the five songs are complex, rich in layers of various musical genres all while comfortably straddling the territory between classic and modern rock sounds.

Most bands that try to embrace so many different genres stumble miserably in an out-of-focus limbo, but not Our Future Leaders. Their varied genres and influences meld together harmoniously and appear not only sharply focused, but right on track.

The hard charging “Enemy” opens the EP with a prominent, searing guitar, which morphs throughout the song, at times dominating and other times blending smoothly with layered vocals. “Caliber” has a more Punk/Alternative sound with a fast, frenzied pace. The creamy vocals in “Kill the Youth” tempers the edgy music and gives the song a classic, psychedelic feel. In “Obtain” a classic tone spins around a Modern Rock sound in a swirling musical alliance. Closing the EP is the softer, “American Dream” with an acoustic guitar opening and velvety vocal layers drawing the listener along with the lyrical message “We offer up empty greetings and pointless banter / we don’t always have to be machines.”

The EP was recorded at Orlando’s Old Groove Studios and produced by Casey Daniel (of Seven Mary Three and NerVer). It was a great pairing, he did a terrific job with the band and their music.

Machines is an impressive debut; the five songs on it show a lot of diversity in the band’s sound. The EP is available at Amazon, CD Baby and iTunes.

Our Future Leaders opened the show and proceeded to melt faces. Having their regular drummer definitely made a difference. They started their set with good driving power rock and the energy was filling the room. I could see the people stop texting and playing pool to move toward the stage. Always a good sign. The energy continued to build and transferred from the band to the crowd and back. The music was original and tight. Then I got to see some magic I have not seen in a long time. The band moved into their punk songs and the energy went through the roof. The crowd began dancing frenetically to the point of a mosh pit and everyone was having a great time. It was truly a treat reminding me of a time gone by when rock music was pure energy and fun. When it took your soul and just wrung it out. Leaving you exhausted and wanting more. I was really impressed by the talent of the leader (Brian Strean). His range went from mellow to hard to punk rock with consistency. The talent of this band is something to watch. Then came the real treat. It’s always a pleasure to attend a show when the opening act blows away the main act. And this is exactly what happened. When Hannen came on, the front man tried to encourage the crowd to come to the stage and party as they did before but, he had very little present. As they started you could to tell the music was bland and mainstream. It did not work after the previous show. If you like mainstream however, this could be a band you could get into. After listening to the free cd, I found it smooth and pleasant but that is really not my forte. There is too much of that out there already. I’m happy that there are bands going in the energy direction like Our Future Leaders. It’s about time to get back to good powerful rock that gets your heart pounding and your blood pumping.
