Creator Sessions: New York City band 'Nxtime' releases their NEW single "Future Love"
By Guest Contributor on July 18, 2020
A trio of up-and-coming NYC musicians, comprised of Nate, the lead guitarist, Ray, the soothing-voiced singer, and Imhoteep, on drums, are hoping to win your heart over with their new single, "Future Love." The band that you've not yet heard of is called nxtime, and their throwback pop beats and emotional lyrics are here to take the music world by storm. We sat down with the boys to talk about their new song, their name change, and what's in store for nxtime in the next few months and beyond.
Q. We're super excited for Future Love to release on July 17th! Can you tell us about what it was like writing the song and the recording process?
"About two years ago I was driving somewhere with my brother and we were having a conversation about relationships - or rather my lack thereof at that time in my life. My brother told me that the love of my life is out there somewhere, right now. This got me thinking - everything that’s going on in my life right now, all the good and bad, I’m going to share with her at some point in the future. I had the melody written and I finished the lyrics. At one of our first jam sessions Nate showed me a chord progression he’d been sitting on, and it was perfect. We recorded an instrumental for the track and sent the song to Kayla Joe. Kayla added these beautiful layers and harmony to the track, she killed it."
Q. Where do you find creativity or inspiration to write songs and how do you build them together?
"We start with something simple, maybe a chord progression, melody, or lyric, and try to find the emotion within it. As we experiment and slowly write the song, we try to focus on that single feeling throughout the entire process. We're looking for a sound that causes a reaction, emotional or physical."
Q. Tell us about the name nxtime and where it originated.
"It's a simplification of the phrase "see you next time", something common yet deeply meaningful depending on who it's spoken to. We thought up the name in the early days of the pandemic, we came across branding issues and had a major show cancelled on the same day NYC started going into lockdown. Our friends were beginning to separate and self quarantine and it was unclear when we would all see each other again."
Q. How does it feel to finally be releasing music after working so hard for the past few years, and especially with all the turmoil that Covid caused NYC to lockdown?
"It feels amazing, we've poured our hearts and souls into this project and are so excited for people to finally hear it!"
Q. We're excited for the world to hear it too! What are your plans for the future? More singles or maybe even an album?
"We have several singles on the way, and are constantly writing. For now we're focused on the singles, and we're so ready for the world hear them."
Q. Awesome. What's been your favorite moment on the journey so far as a band?
"The rhythm of life while recording. We were spending all our time working on music, late nights and early mornings, either demoing in the city or commuting to the studio in Connecticut to work on the singles. Any free time we'd be rock climbing, in a gym in the city or off in the woods after a session in Connecticut."
Q. Anything else you want to share with us?
"Wear a mask and wash your hands, we're trying to go on tour as soon as it's safe."
Q. Where can we find you on social media?

nxtime is a band from New York City. Comprised of Ray Rubio, a singer/songwriter, and producer from Harlem. Nate Christensen, a guitarist/producer from Northern Colorado who played in several projects in his local music scene while studying at CU Boulder. The songwriting duo are backed by drummer/producer Imhotep Williams, a drummer from the Bronx, and a rotating lineup of other local musicians.
They met through the New York City rock climbing community, then started writing together during recording sessions in Ray’s bedroom studio. They deliver upbeat, danceable rhythms and modern yet nostalgic melodies; inspired by classic RnB with the synth soaked tones of 80’s pop.
They are currently recording their debut record alongside “Groove is in the Heart” producer/mixer Mike Rogers and have several singles on the way.
The song starts with a steady paced synth and guitar, beautifully accompanied by the vocals in the first verse. I love the creative lyrical direction that leads us right into the catchy chorus. I adore the vocal delivery and the harmonies here, making the beautifully written lyrics feel silky smooth. The second verse continues the vibe of the song, further creating a soundscape that we start to feel connected to. Through and through, this song is a must add to any soft and chill vibe playlist.
The music video is also well directed and perfectly sets the visual vibe of the song, check it out below!

Their newest release is titled, “Future Love” and it is a combination of captivating guitar melodies and smooth, comforting vocals. The song was created when the songwriter of the band, Ray Rubio was driving around discussing his relationships with his brother, realizing that he hasn’t found that special someone. His brother reminded him that his special someone is out there, waiting to be found, and he will get to share all of his life experiences with her. He was inspired to write a song about how he will one day find his soulmate, and Nate (the lead guitarist) laid down a perfect chord progression the song came together. This song is perfect for any hopeless romantics out there, and is inspiration to never stop looking for your partner in life. Check out the track below.

NYC-based pop trio nxtime is finally getting to release a new song and music video this week after what feels like months of quarantine. Nate Christensen, guitarist, Ray Rubio, lead singer, and Imhotep Williams, drummer for the band, have all been patiently waiting for this record to be finished.
It feels like an extension of their name, which is a shortened version of the phrase “see you next time,” something they came up with during the early days of the pandemic in 2020 when friends and family were separating to quarantine and they weren’t sure when they would see each other again.
They held a pre-release Zoom call to announce the new song to fans and play the music video. The song is called Bob Ross, and it’s based on the idea of not being able to eloquently tell someone that you love and care about them “and wishing you could say something as well as Bob Ross paints,” said Ray.
The song is a soft-spoken but catchy tune, with lead singer Ray crooning in the chorus various clever references to the 80’s painter: “Why can’t I just paint the scene like Bob Ross?” and in the second verse: “You’re my work of art.” This is their third music video, and it holds a similar surrealist quality as their fun disco-ball themed video for A Boy Named Johnny Gates and their debut single Future Love, which includes space scenes and an inflatable dinosaur.
In the video, the boys alternate from trying their hand at painting a canvas to performing inside a Bob Ross painting, with snow flying by and winter evergreen trees in the background. Then a magic disco ball abducts them and they have a quick vintage jam session in space.
Nate mentioned, “We always get so jazzed when the bridge comes in this song. You’re just hit with crazy synth layers and a funky guitar line, and you’re like “woah” but it flows with the rest of the song perfectly.” You can hear a clip of Bob Ross talking during the bridge of the song. He says, “We don’t make mistakes. We have happy accidents.”
The video closes with the music halting us back to reality. The greenscreen backdrop pulls us back to the studio where they are recording and the boys ask each other how that take went, just in case you needed to be reminded that they didn’t actually get to go to space.
When asked about the concept for the video being in a Bob Ross painting, Nate said, “Bob Ross was such a prolific painter, we instantly thought about the imagery of his artwork, and the peace it gives to him and to his viewers. We wanted to capture that aesthetic.”Of course, there were some challenges along the way to creating the video. They had never worked with a green screen before, and didn’t realize the black X’s for tracking needed to be removed before they filmed, so those had to be keyed out individually in every frame.
“Biggest challenge: editing. The majority of our time was spent working with the green screen in post, which we had never done before! Overall the filming process was the best time, we have an amazing team.” noted Ray.
Nxtime knows how hard things are for folks right now, and they’ve decided to donate the proceeds from this song. “Bob Ross made donations throughout his life to St. Judes Hospital, and things right now are rough for so many people, so this seemed like the thing Bob would’ve wanted us to do.”
They also just finished writing a new album. “It was a relatively quick process and we just started the recording process, we have some newer songs we are working on that might sneak onto the album…who knows!” quipiped Ray.
Nate added, “All we want is to make people smile and dance. Put as many good vibes into the world as we can.”The music video for Bob Ross dropped today and you can check it out right here. Stay tuned for future singles, livestream shows and check nxtime out on Instagram at @nxtimemusic. - NXTIME DROPS NEW SINGLE AND MUSIC VIDEO FOR BOB ROSS

“Bob Ross” is the band’s latest single, and the first of this year. The band was inspired by the cultural icon, known for his ability to teach the masses how to paint picturesque scenes with joy and ease, and his popular “happy little trees” saying. This song exemplifies the band’s signature sound – an upbeat bop with searching lyrics and a splash of wit. The songwriters, Ray and Nate, wish they could be as chill and well-spoken as Bob Ross, so they express their mental blocks through their music.
They are quick to point out that the blocks are a result of a scattered brain, perhaps connected to ADHD, and it’s a feeling that many can relate to – knowing in your mind what you want to say, but not being able to be eloquent in the way that Bob Ross is when he would paint. The production is cheerful and complements the chipper vocals. Even though the band is expressing their frustrations in the lyrics, there is nothing frustrating about the song. It’s elegantly simple, backed by drums, guitars, and shimmery synths, which perfectly encapsulates the joyful calm that Bob Ross has become known for. And even though the band wishes they were more eloquent, I think any listener can pick up the straightforward explanations in the lyrics. Ending with a few sample lines from the cultural icon himself, the band closes out the happy song on a happy note.
In honor of Mr. Ross, the band is donating the proceeds from our Spotify streams to a charity that he was passionate about, St. Jude Children’s Hospital. If you love the song please consider heading to stjude.org and making a donation to end childhood cancer. - Glasse Factory

nxtime just released their debut single titled Future Love (feat. Kayla Joe).
The song features soulful melodies, unique grooves, delicate vocals, and solid hooks.
Lyrically, Ray delivers. He has an impressive writing style.
”This song is about the bridge between the past and the future that exists in all of our lives. Crossing that bridge with someone else and sharing who each of you were before you met is magic,” comments Ray.
nxtime’s music connects with people. They make real art.
The song deserves to be heard. It’s a modern masterpiece, in my opinion.

Nxtime dedicates this song to his “Future Love”, after a conversation with his brother about how the love of his life is out there, and he decided to write a song about it. In regards to his brothers comment, Nxtime states,
“This got me thinking- everything that’s going on in my life right now… all the good and bad, all the accomplishments or missteps… literally everything surrounding this time, I’m going to share with her at some point in the future. This made me feel less alone in a way. It gave me a lot of comfort and made me want to seek a person I could truly be vulnerable with. This concept sat with me for a while until I had the melody in my head and lyrics written.”
Lead guitarist, Nate, had the created the melodies by themselves, and then when combined with the songwriters romantic lyrics, was the moment this song was perfectly created. This is a song that you will want to get lost in the soothing melodies and the promising lyrics. - Uraniam Wave
New York City-based band nxtime, consisting of producer, singer-songwriter Ray Rubio, guitarist/producer Nate Thompson and drummer Imhotep Williams, have just shared their brand new single Call My Bluff, a captivating pop song out now via Camel.
I am very fond of Ray Rubio's lush, expressive vocals which instantly draw the listener's attention to their storytelling. I am also really enjoying how all three members sing in vocal harmony, beautifully enhancing the emotion of their storytelling. What also makes this song quite special and memorable is the infectious bass line throughout the song and how it is nicely paired with captivating guitar strums that create an overall groovy, feel-good atmosphere perfect for a chill day at home. “The Death Of Television” is the newest pumping disco-pop offering from Nxtime.
The track was produced by Mike Rogers (Groove Is In The Heart), and is a vivacious production consisting disco melodies and intoxicating guitars. Ray’s voice shines throughout the track and works in perfect synergy with the composition to create a joyous and uplifting bop.
Speaking to the tracks title and the meaning behind the words Ray explains, “‘The Death of Television’ which in my mind actually means the ‘rebirth of television’ – it hasn’t died it’s just been regenerated… And that’s the same way I feel about myself and the relationships I involve myself in. Change is always going to creep up on us – we all want to be better at something. And that kind of change could be some force that you had no idea was coming, like the love of your life or several loves of your life”.
The duo, consisting of guitarist Nate Thompson and singer/producer Ray Rubio, are based out of New York and have been creating together since they met through the rock climbing community. The pair work with various musicians on their plethora of glistening 80s inspired pop and dance tunes.
Expect a lot more to come from Nxtime in the future. - IHOUSEU
Danceable and nostalgic beats in an R&B-pop song.
Nxtime is known as one of Central Park’s favorite bands. They were formed by singer/songwriter Ray Rubio, guitarist Nate Christensen, and drummer Imhotep Williams. Their Spotify describes their music as “upbeat, danceable rhythms and modern yet nostalgic melodies; inspired by classic R&B with the synth-soaked tones of 80’s pop.” Additionally, their YouTube and website showcase these dance tunes. Nxtime’s latest single, titled “Greek Tragedy”, comes with a music video that encapsulates who the band is.
“Greek Tragedy” is a love song built with lyrics that escape common cliches. Verses like “You make your life seem like a greek tragedy, but is it really that bad? No you’re just being dramatic” are relatable to the audience. In addition, the song has a joyful pop tone that overrides most of the drama in the lyrics. Overall, this song has it all, but the band seals the deal with their creativity. So, if you don’t know Nxtime yet, hit play on their “Greek Tragedy” so you can enjoy the nostalgic vibes the song gives off. - RGM
