Bio
Jazz has always been its own musical language, and Bay Area-based None Too Soon speaks it fluently. One of Northern California's hottest draws and the perfect soundtrack to any celebration, the band is spontaneous while skillful in the way they play classic and contemporary Jazz, and as one prominent local club owner-turned-fan recently cheered: “None Too Soon captivated their audience from start to finish with an astonishingly deft and entertaining musical and visual performance. Their set list is comprised of the songs you want to hear, they are consummate professionals, easy to work with, and extremely talented.”
Jazz legend Miles Davis once said of his beloved genre, "first you imitate, then you innovate," and that's a beautiful musical description of Bay Area-based Jazz troupe None Too Soon, with founder/guitarist Gregg Zehr expounding on their sound that "when we get together and work up new material, ideas are bouncing around and a piece of music we already know starts to take on a sound that’s all our own."
Feeding off each other's energy as players as much as they do their live crowds, None Too Soon is anchored in the pocket by its founding trio of guitarist Gregg Zehr, keyboardist and master improviser Bob Aron, bassist Jack Marshall and drummer Tom Weiske, who sitting behind the kit where he draws from his background playing across the stylistic spectrum "I enjoy the synergy we all get when we lock into a groove, where the music seems to propel us rather than the other way around."
Songbird Nicolle McDonald flutters overtop,
dancing in harmony with co-lead vocalist Grant Pierce, who in the same time
rounds out the group's rhythm section on lead guitar, complementing the
finger-floating of bassist Jack Marshall, who plays a fretless bass that
produces a super-melodic sound carrying on in the tradition popularized by Jaco
Pastorius, describes the sound the band makes together as eloquently as its
performed, noting that "my most treasured musical moments have been when
the conspiracy between the bass and drums and the rest of the band molds and
shapes the energy of a tune and levitates the entire band above the stage. When
this happens, the band feels it and the audience feels it and there is absolutely
nothing else like it."
