Following their musical dreams with contemplative tunes. An album that speaks out their hearts and souls is now out.
Bluesy and sophisticated Americana rock. That’s NMBR11 for you. There is something mystical about 11. That’s how many fingers I have and that is also a balance between two figures. I’m one of the lucky few who got to listen to the previews when the album was being made last year. And to see this finally come true is really exciting.
There are 10 solid track in Follow the song. NMBR11 don’t really depart from the standard lounge tempo although some are faster than the others. The Way I Do is a passionate love song. Not the saccharine ‘oh baby bay I love you ‘ type. But a really descriptive take on seduction and the consummation of that love.
The Wheel describes the moment of total bliss: “ we’ve done our time, there’s only now.” Yeshiva Lex sounds like she is really a belter and she stretches out her pipes in many of this album’s tracks. I think her voice is a combination of vulnerability and strength as she navigates her artistic instincts, whispering in those verses needing nuance and stretching full force in those needing the message to be delivered.
You can hear both of their voices as duets or in the case of Bulhack, as backing vocals. There are spaces to breath in the tracks where instruments can do their thing. Standing Tall is my favorite as it contains that melody that stays in your head. In general, Nmbr11’s Follow the Song has a wide appeal. I hope one day TV producers will pick one of their tunes for a great series. Wouldn’t that be great?
In Bright Star/Wade the Water, Lex sounds like she is channeling Billie Holiday. I also noticed that he has a close alliance with Jazz which compliments Bulhack’s love for classic rock. We Can Do Anything closes this album. In a way this sum’s up the duo’s optimism in conceiving this album. If you like their recordings, I encourage you to catch them live. Witness the raw but sophisticated energy of Nmbr11 in this artfully crafted debut album. - Sphere Music
NMBR11 Please Forgive Me
After the Tennessee Stiffs and now NMBR11, you might think that I got a thing for that painfully beautiful, poignant mixture of female vocals riding across a tune of stark Americana . . . and I guess I do. Remember, I'm the guy who hates country, mainly because it's lacking in soul. So, I'll fight you to the death that this ain't country, cause what NMBR11 do is just about as full as soul as you can get. Sure the song is gently acoustic, and beats at a leisurely crawl, but that doesn't mean it's not powerful. Don't be fooled. The fantastic guitar work of Bernard Bulhack
interweaving with the angelic, aching vocals of Yeshiva is all about the power. The power of expert songwriting and musicianship. The power of emotion, and pain, remorse and hidden places. Dark, country, gothic American is the name of the game here, and it's just about as evocative and moving as anything you're gonna find. Amazing vocals, poignant acoustic and weeping edges of slide guitar. When Yeshiva sings, "Please forgive me, I was wrong," Man. If she was singing to me, all defenses would simply melt and I'd forgive her for the next 1,000 things she
may do. A beautiful, spellbinding song. - The Ripple Effect
NMBR11 (pronounced Number-Eleven) is made up of Bernard Bulhack and Yeshiva Lex. The band was born in 2012 when the two met while joining a blues project. Their interest in other genres drove them to branch off to create a duo and eventually full band as well. Both born and raised in South America, coming to the US over a decade ago and a half ago, Bernard and Yeshiva join forces to create songs that reflect the wide variety of influences, though they tend to drift toward Americana in their writing. Their debut full-length album “Follow The Song,” was released independently earlier this year. Recorded at Muscle Shoals' renowned Wishbone Studios, the CD includes contributions from several esteemed contributors, including Grammy nominated engineer Daniel Beard. In addition to writing all the songs in the album, Yeshiva & Bernard poured their hearts and souls in the production of this project, contributing as recording and editing engineers, arrangers, and performers adding vocals, guitars, and percussion. It has been described as their most realized work yet, as well as honest, emotional, inspirational, and with a direct message. A follow up EP is in th works, and Fall tours are planned for the Southern US and South America. More at nmbr11.com. - Jazz & Blues Florida Magazine
