It's always a real treat when the MOEKE Records Summer Singles compilation starts coming out each year. The first two songs are available now and come courtesy of Nicholas Mallis & the Borealis (“Theme Park Days”) and Four Eyes (“Life Finds a Way”). For his part, Mallis does a fine job capturing the peak between 1980s fashion-pop and earnest sincerity that resides between Simply Red and Glass Tiger. Continuing on, Four Eyes' Erin Lovett unsurprisingly does a remarkable job of breaking hearts anew by lyricizing the everyday minutiae that tends to pile up to non-minute levels. MALLIS’ PALACE: Athens pop maestro Nicholas Mallis has a new EP coming out next month, and he just released the first single, “A Song For Georgie Fruit,” this week. Of Montreal fans will recognize this as a direct reference to Kevin Barnes, and indeed, the song was inspired when Mallis was watching the oM documentary The Past is a Grotesque Animal. Although Mallis describes the song as “fan fiction,” which tends to be worshipful, it also doesn’t shy away from being critical where criticism is perhaps due. The most obvious nod to of Montreal, really, is the song’s musical structure and vocal phrasing. The new EP is named The Hobby Lobbyist, and though it’s still a few weeks until you can grab it, you can check out “A Song For Georgie Fruit” at nicholasmallis.bandcamp.com. It is to my own shame that I ignored Nicholas Mallis’ former band, Yo Soybean, for so long simply because of its name; Mallis, who is among this town's best songwriters, can twist a lyric and pick a trebly riff with the best of them. His new band, The Borealis, is set to release its first album, Golden Age Vanity, in July. The record pulls from the twin initiatives of surf-rock and the great American songbook. Word on the street is there will be some pre-release copies of Golden Age Vanity available at the group’s AthFest performance. [GL] - Flagpole Magazine

Great Grooves: Nicholas Mallis and the Borealis released their debut album this past weekend, but the full record won't be available for streaming until July 22. On that date, listeners can hear the entirety of Golden Age Vanity on Bandcamp, Spotify, iTunes and all other major online outlets. Compact discs should be available in local record shops now. Mallis has already released a slow stream of tracks from the album; the latest is “White Girl,” a blue-eyed R&B slow jam with clear nods to Prince and Marvin Gaye. In lesser hands, this type of thing could have easily slipped into parody territory, but Mallis' hands are greater, and it's utterly enjoyable, especially toward the end when the guitar really comes in. In addition to his work with locals Sam Sniper and The Viking Progress, Athens songwriter Nicholas Mallis is known for fronting the indie-folk outfit Yo Soybean, a band that dissolved late last year. Now, Mallis is striking out on his own, and offering up a taste of what folks can expect from his new project.
