A Marlboro County native is seeing great success with her newly released "R&B" single.

Nesha Pegues goes by Nesha DaVoice.

She's been singing since she was eight years old and is now an independent "R&B" singer and songwriter. - MARLBORO COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE)

To the music industry, she’s Nesha Da Voice, but here in Marlboro County, she’s Latasha Pegues.

Now, she’s a viral sensation with her hit single “What If.”

The song, which Pegues said is about a woman who is approached by a married man, was written in 2010. She and her team held on to the song for a while but they knew it was a hit. So, after a conversation with her manager, Pegues released the song.

“We looked on YouTube and within two days it was already up to 20,000 views,” she said. “So, it was gaining rapid exposure off YouTube alone.”

Right now, the song has 176,000 streams on YouTube. And then there’s TikTok, where the song is trending.

“What If” is a hit, just like she knew it was.

“We started seeing a lot of traffic on TikTok, on Spotify and on Facebook. We knew the song was going to be big, but we didn’t know it was going to receive this much attention,” she said.

And if you think Pegues is an overnight sensation, you’d be wrong. She’s been singing since she was eight years old and her talent has taken her across the country. She’s opened for R&B acts like Grammy winners Anthony Hamilton and Fantasia Barrino.

“So many people have reached out about the song, we have the record spinning in the UK right now and several different radio stations here have asked for the record as well. It’s gained a lot of notoriety,” she said.

As an independent artist, Pegues produces her own songs and has a lot more flexibility than an artist signed to a major label.

And for a single to go viral, that means more opportunities to showcase her talent. Pegues said 2024 is going to have her booked and busy off the success of “What If.”

“It’s a blessing. I talk about real things that people can relate to. And the dating scene now, so many women are approached by men who are already in a relationship and a lot of women can relate to it, believe it or not, a lot of men have posted the song as well, and they can relate to it too. It feels good that I can write a record where a lot of women can feel that they have a voice,” she said.
